Why is Jumpgate such a red-headed stepchild?

Ranger_AllanRanger_Allan Member Posts: 3

Jumpgate has an 8.1 rating on here, the highest rated game has 8.3...

Why so little interest?  IMHO, it is the best game out there;  no other game allows you to control your destiny so much.

Is it the simple fact that many people are lazy and want to pick a destination and click Autopilot?

Is it that there is not a huge player-base?

I really don't understand why more people aren't playing this game!

They are afraid they might realize that they dont have skills, so autopilot is easier, auto-aim is easy, luck brings them results off the conficts they participate....

I have to admit that I came to JG a lil' bit cocky. I played X-Wing, the original dos version (in floppies) and I used to be able to kill a Frigate or a Star Destroyer in an X-wing, and fight 12-1 odds and survive (ship beaten up of course) so I logically thought that I would be an Ace in JG, which is totally the opposite of who I am in JG.

I remember when I would finish the game in X-wing I would be a captain, with 70 or so deaths and such, and when I went to try it again.. I would be commander in just the first part (or tour). JG is so much different. Your rank NEVER is a testament of who you really are, combat-wise, econ-wise.... it just allows you to get this or that, but the real pilot skills... one can have and really demonstrate from the beginning.

The flight engine might take a bit to get used to, but is also what makes it unique.

I just reactivated my account.  I am level 25.  I havent started really getting back into it.  Been in the simulator, brushing up.  Flux killing and docking.  It is a great game, but like I said somewhere else, you cant take your eyes off the screen for 5 seconds.  It is a game of pure skill.

I agree.  Jumpgate will never have the following of a game like Eve or WOW.  Too much real skill needed for the average joe.

I've been playing Eve for a couple of weeks now, it beats Jumpgate in everyway but FUN!!  I can't understand why its not  got better numbers online. I suppose the  reason is circular, it needs more people to attract more people.

I'm mainly a combat pilot so I'll talk about that aspect. In Jumpgate you dont get better by levelling, in a matter of days you can be flying a top combat ship. Its really down to your own skill, partly hand eye twitch reflexes and partly experience and nerve. It's amazing the advantage staying calm gives you in combat. You don't win because you've been playing the game longer and have a humungus ship and weapons to match, its down to you.

Test yourself, give it a try.

The reason JG never really got the attention it so deserves is simple in my opinion:

    1. It's not based on a pre-established game universe so that's 1/2 of the newer MMO players gone.

    2. It doesn't instantly allow the average person to quickly feel amazing and increase their  sense of worth  simply because they sit there clicking "Attack attack, heal, auto-travel for 40 minutes, attack attack, chat to NPC, run back for 40 minutes". (And let's be honest most online players, play online simply to feel better then the other average players even though their one of a dozen thousand so called 'elites)

    3. Doesn't allow young teenagers to dress up as a skantly dressed females of various species and dance around in order to try and get free gear

    4. Never once got the marketing pressence needed to attract attention due to the unfortunate pull-out of 3DO straight after retail launch (And most of you will know this can make a MMO because many players these days will turn around and say "hmmm JG? Not seen it advertised on xxxx... not worth a damn then obviously)

    5. Requires time and real skill to play (Though I've been playing for 6 years or more and I'm still a unskilled bullet shield, so maybe this is a lesser factor)

    6. Prehistoric Graphics, though in Jumpgate you'll never see the blocky jagged textures you get on ship/station/gate textures in EVE... but hey EVE has pretty lighting to distract people from that so it still receives claims of being "The best looking MMO about".... Maybe JG sector beacons should become snazzy discoballs which fling random flashes of bright colours around, certainly worked for EVE.

    7. No stats... and everyone knows having to calculate aim without auto-targeting and dicerolling can be a very difficult complex process of  "Point and shoot".

You don't think there's anything amiss? I'm sat here wearing a red and white gingham dress, and army boots, you think that's un-amiss?

Well it sounds like I may have overlooked a great game, definately going to give this one a try now. I'm so sick of the typical sandbox MMO's, everything keeps getting easier and easier it's about time something was hard as hell!

the graphics are appalling. Of course i dont mind about graphics but most people do.

the reason i never tried JG is because the billing system doesn't let me in. I ve tried three times already since 2004 with 3 different credit cards. All got rejected. they dont accept paypal either so i simply cant play. A friend of mine told me JG never accepted his credit cards either.

Too bad JumpGate's graphics are really bad.  DarkSpace is more appealing, and Infinity: The Quest for Earth is where the interest is at.  (It's in MMORPG's list FYI).

Besides it's good but not good enough for P2P.

Jumpgate uses PayByCash for its billing, so even if your credit card is declined, there are plenty of other ways to pay.

What really sucks is though is that you need a credit card in order to enter the free trial period. In that respect the former European server was better because there "free trial" really meant "free" with no strings and hooks attached. And I believe that a really free trial period could attract more new players who don't want to give their credit card details upfront to a game that doesn't look too nice and shiny really.

NetDevil has recently re-assumed all support agendas for Jumpgate from Themis, so maybe we might see some changes here during the course of this year. Rumours are that some significant changes are underway already.

I know great graphics don't nessisarily make a great game, but to me it means a lot. In my opinion, the graphics in Jumpgate are absolutely horrible and I think a lot of people would agree on that. I can only speculate, but I think that's what turns a lot of people off and not the fact that you need "d4 ü83R sK!llz".

  • SupermaxSupermax Member Posts: 27
    I agree.

"Good looks" is what attracts players, "depth" and "community" are what keeps them.

I am by no means an expert in 3D graphics, but to my semi-tutored eye it appears that the most of the models and textures are just badly made, regardless of the lack of any "eye candy" such as phong shading, bump- and normal maps, pixel/vertex shader effects and whatever else causes current-gen and next-gen CPUs to burn over 100 Watts...

These days, how many people don't have credit cards or debit cards? The credit card issue seems like a small detail.

And you're correct, now that NetDevil is prospering from Auto Assault  they have promised to produce dramatic upgrades to the graphics and functionality of Jump Gate.

CC's aren't as common in Europe as they are in the US, and quite a large portion of the current JG player base are from Europe after all. Fortunately ND uses PayByCash which effectively bypasses this limitation except for the trial period. I'd really like the cc requirement for the free trial gone, maybe ND could make the free period shorter in exchange e.g. 5 or 7 instead of 10 days.

You know, I just got a Saitek X-52 about two months ago and have been using it in Jumpgate ever since (I was using a Saitek Cyborg).

When you log onto Jumpgate there is a screen for controls, which you can also access even while flying (make sure there are no asteroids or aliens around when you do this in space). To access this in the game, simply hit "ESC" and the screen will come up, then click on "control". From there you will see a graphic at the top for a keyboard and mouse, but if you click on it it will change to a keyboard and joystick, click again and it will be a two, and then a three axis joystick and keyboard etc.

From this page you will also be able to assign combat, flight, view, radar, modx functions to the various buttons which festoon your X-52.

I bet most of them and EvE online player will be playing that while they build something for wait 3 hours of an fleet to form.

lol, it is 100% fact that almost all EvE players play in windowed and only pay attention when there is pew pew on screen

I don't think it's fair to compare DS to JG since they are so different... unllike JG DS is all 'bout combat... Infinity isn't out for another year or two.. if ever.

and speakin' of graphics.. while outdated they do allow more ppl to play since that also means the CPU specs are much less demandin' and it's space so what graphics do ya need? it's just stars out there.. everythin' is like a speck of light because of the distances and ya don't get to see things up close and personal all that often

About the graphics, don't forget, this was released in 2001 as the first space MMO ever, so the graphics won't be that impressive. check out the new screenshots of  Jumpgate Evolution that was recently announced... They're mixed into this section with the original Jumpgate pics, but you can tell the difference and easily see the improvement using current technology :) I think it's looking freakin awesome

yeah then the game comes out i was playing the test period but was dont able to pay coz no CC.But i was looking few days ago to make trial account not able now without CC.
Hope in Jumpgate evolution they got a better pay system but this i think would be no problem since netdevil works with plaync they ever got a very good support und paying system. And yeah Jumpgate was real skill game like neocron both my 2favorit mmorpg in the past.

And JG was such incredible quests for the fraks pvp sytsem was to nice.
Then this realistic space physik(try to dock a full loaded ToW,thats realy fun ;)
or to hint at astroids so you cant find by others radar.
