Is WOW and EVE the ONLY MMOPRGs on the market?!

Now I know the answer to this question is of course no but after looking at the reader's choice nomination it seems that these 2 products completely DOMINATE the industry. Also you see a lot more buzz about upcomming products then you do products currently on the market. I am just wondering 3 things; 1. Is it a fare statement to say this industry is currently comprised of pretty much only 2 games, World of Warcraft and EVE online? (I know Guild Wars is up there but I tend to sit in the camp that says GW is not a true MMO.) 2. Both EVE and WOW are "2nd generation" MMOs, (being they are now both more then 2 years old) in the past 2 years has our industry ground to a hault being that their hasn't been a game out there to challenge these two behemouths? Finally 3. Both of these games are VERY different from one another and have had very different definitions of success. (WOW is a quest based game with very linear progression paths, EVE is an open world "sandbox" with almost no linear progression. WOW has sold over 7,000,000 copies and has made MMOs "mainstream", EVE has had almost no retail support and only has 200,000 active subscribers but due to their low costs of development this has provided the company with substantial profits.) I know their has been a lot of talk about "wow" clones about to flood the market, but would you guys rather be seeing small team developed, more open EVE style producsts as well? Just a few things to ponder as our industry has no doubt been changed by these 2 titans.

Eve a titan!?!  LMAO - thank you for the funniest post of the day!

Here are just a few other MMO's that have more subscribers than Eve...

    - City of Hero's/Villians

    - EverQuest 1 & 2

    - LineAge 1 & 2

    - Star Wars Galaxies

    - Final Fantasy

Totally agree with Spathotan. I really shouldn't respond to this, but something in me wants to bring the OP back to reality even if I realize that very unlikely.

EvE and WoW shouldn't even be mentioned in the same paragraph or even sentence unless the topic is about games that have a lowercase letter between two capital ones in their name. WoW is a worldwide success unlike basically any mmo before it(it is popular in every market it functions in) while is only semi-popular in a single market... definatly not a Titan in any respect of the word(many games deserve this title over EvE easily).

As for the kind of games I would like to see in the future. I would say nothing like WoW and certainly nothing like EvE... I would like to see certain aspects of current mmo's continued for certain, but I would also like to see some new ideas(stuff in my head) added and some concepts that already exist refined. All of this would require a large amount of manpower, something a small company just cannot do without taking a decade to make the game.

A.) Learn to use good english skills, doesn't have to be perfect, just readable and reasonably free of mistakes. It will save you a lot of trouble down the road, trust me.

B.) There are more succesful games than EVE, Lineage 1/2 for example.

C.) Active subscribers are far from the best ways to judge a game.

D.) None of the games coming out can be considered WOW clones. Warhammer Online might have been a candidate for the title, Since the Warcraft series was originally modeled on Warhammer. But its focused on PvP, something that puts it way out of WOW's category of playstyle.

EVE is #1 on MMORPG.com for two main reasons:

The game is solid. It's really for the upper class MMO players, who enjoy more than just killing stuff and like a dynamic player driven world. Granted, some players don't like EVE for a variety of reasons, but the sensible ones can see why it's a great game. Most ppl here are from the upper elite of MMOs and understand that WoW is a prettty over hyped.

Secondly, EVE Online has won many awards from MMORPG.com bringing even more MMO players here. The game itself does not have very many subscribers compared to it's competitors.

EVE a titan, hahaha, that made me laugh for a bit (with all the respect to CCP and EVE fans, ofcourse)

But no, EVE is not a titan. In fact, EVE isn't even in the top 3 of most played games. Heck, not even in the top 5. I know that the ratings & awards are very misleading, but they do not show a good sign of which game is popular at all.I'm sure the asking to vote for the awards also had a nice effect on the rating.

The only reason you will see EVE in that many awards is because CCP asked its players to vote for them, where the far majority of the MMORPG community doesn't even know this website and awards exist!

So, No, its not just WoW.

While WoW certainly is the all-ruling king, it certainly isn't the only title.

    WoW: 7 million subscribers
    Lineage: 1,5 million subscribers
    Lineage: 2: 1,2 million subscribers
    Final Fantasy XI: 600k subscribers

As you can see, there is a big gap between WoW and other games, and after FFXI, there is another big gap.
But nowadays, its hard to find out which game is the most popular mmorpg, because many MMORPG's are switching to a free to play model.for example, the chinese MMORPG westward journey online II has 56 million accounts created. But how many of those are still active and how many people are still playing is unknown SOE's station pass doesn't exactly help a lot either. While it certainly is a big titan, WoW is not the only mmorpg on the market that is doing well.

OR #3 Eve actually links this site directly on its main webpage.  Therefore has all the Eve fanatics coming here to vote.

The contest is irrelavant because most people voting havent even played all the games to know which is better then the other.  All it tells is that EVE directly sends its players here to influence voting.  And WoW dominates the market and therefore has alot of people voting for it because they too are fanatics.

so i tried the free trial not long after EVE came out and i really didnt like the concept or playstyle of the game. Ok i never played EVE for an extended period of time because it was simply BORING i understood pretty much everything about it as far as what you see when you just start out (well crafting got to me a little) but mostly i thought that it was a bit empty and playing it seemed redundant.

sure it is pretty complex but that isnt the reason it doesnt have many subscribers.  Many people have tried EVE (especially after the NGE... believe me) and previous MMO players probably didnt find it too complicated for them

the reason many of them didnt stay is because (at least from my experience) when you start out it feels pointless and it seems like youre wasting a tremendous amount of time by playing it. =/

these are just my thoughts.... and btw you shouldnt start ranting about how the game is too complicated for people when, for you, it seems too complicated to spell words correctly and actually have an argument that people can read.

i couldnt agree more, plus a lot of players i know hate the fact that it isnt twitch based.  I understand why a lot of people like the game, just i have to say that when you start out at least (because i didnt get farther than that) it seems rather dull, you seem to be going about 2 mph, and you have no idea what is going on or what you are trying to accomplish.

the biggest problem i had with it, and everyone i know who has tried it, was that combat was really boring

I havnt a problem spelling or prunuctuation i just choose not too do so thanks.

you cannot judge a games success (eve) while it is still growing at an exponential rateimageimageimage

Combat get pretty crazy later just slow at the beginnen.I agree does get boring if people are expecting to jump into hardcore combat right off the take. The Rp is decent too.

I'm not sure you should judge people on what they can or cannot figure out as you can't seem to figure out where the "." key is.

While EvE is certainly growing... exponential isn't quite the right word...

WOW has added more players in the past year than Eve has had in it's entire history.

The OP speaks of WoW and EVE games being second generation. Um I'd probably say that they're 3rd Generation.

IMO, First Generation is games like UO etc... (my knowledge is pretty low in this area), second you had EQ/DAoC/AO, Wow and EVE being the most recent are third generation... Games coming out now are 4th in my eyes.

But then again, theres probably an official office somewhere that decides this sort of stuff, so Im prob wrong.

    Quoted because its the truth.

Eve is #1 on this site just like Pimpslord (rotfl)  is in line to win game of the month on www.mpogd.com. Crappy companies want to get exposure but dont have the money for advertising... so they get their players to vote... sometimes through shady means (offering ingame rewards for voting).. or in this case a link on the main website.

EDIT: i would also like to add... that a certain game that everyone insults religiously on this forum also has alot of paid sucribers... it starts with an R :)
