Howdy, Stranger!

It looks like you're new here. If you want to get involved, click one of these buttons!

I don't want to be Aragon or Legolas .... I WANT to be ....

the guy standing in row three spot 7 of Aragon's army.

yep you heard me correctly, I want to play a game where I am not trying to be the Hero of the world. I want to live in that world and if things happen where I am forced to be heroic ... so be it. I don't want to be luke or Han solo, I want to be the Moisture farmer thats pretty darn good with a rifle.

I want a game where i can live another life in another time(cue the "haha does your life suck that bad") . A game where i can do what i please when i want, make a character specialized for my playstyle, if i want to make a 6'7 muscle bound freak, who goes bare chested and walk around with a giant hammer ... I should be able to! if i want to spend all day sitting in a bar drinking it up ... I can.

MMO's nowadays are built around the min/maxers and the hero d00ds.

Just make a world that i can live in and I will be happy.

There is such a place.... Ready....  IT'S CALLED REAL LIFE!  Damn dude go out and socialize ya numbnut!

Actually, that sounds pretty darn sweet... It's nice to see that there are more people out there that has the same wishes for a game as I have.

Sure, it's fun to do some adventure now and again. But not every single hour of every play session. Sometimes it's just nice to spend some time and do something "different" like building a house, redecorating, harvesting your fields or why not just try to sell your freshly picked apples?

*smiles* ... If you were here I'd just kiss you!

there are games out there where you progress through other skills than just hitting things - you can be a crafter in a number of games, a diplomat, ship owner etc. dont know about bog trotter, but never know.

but if you want to sit in a virtual bar all day, good for you - saves you money irl where you can sit in a real bar all day and get drunk and make a fool of yourself over some smart looking member of the opposite sex.

but just got to wonder why you'd want to heard sheep or cows or till soil or sit in a bar in a game when you can do those for real irl.

most games are escapism, they are played to give a break from rl, give you the chance to forget about what might have been a bad day at work or elsewhere.

suppose from what you said, you might be at home in 2nd life, loads of people there, no walking around killing orcs etc - you can create your own bar if you want, even sell and buy stuff there - but again, why bother when you can see the same stuff irl except maybe there is no effort or pain involved in a game while there is irl

i look this wrecked because i've got GIST.
    Whats your excuse?

As I've learned you aren't a hero like Aragorn in LOTRO. Aragorn gives you smaller quests to make that he can't be bothered doing.

Quest: Go to chicken coop in Shire, fetch two eggs after fight with rooster, fetch frying pan that Aragon left in Mordor, go to Mount Doom, crack and scamble eggs in frying pan, lower just above lava line, and cook. Retunr scrambled eggs to Aragon in Helms Deep.

Try UO. Sandbox style, no classes and you can do nearly all you want to do. No need to be a hero in UO :)

i've actually been saying the same thing for years. well, not the part about the bare-chested guy, i don't really get that part..

of course i enjoy playing the hero in single-player games, but i just never think it works in an MMO. i'd rather be a soldier in an army, than a hero, among thousands of heroes. just seems absurd to me.

also think a world-sim sandbox type game would be pretty cool, to focus more on crafting, let players be farmers, blacksmiths, traders, etc, except in an exotic fantasy world. kind of like 'a tale in the desert' except with at least some combat, loot, mobs, npcs, etc. and more fantasy or sci-fi, not historical.

    When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.

Exactly! You shouldn't choose to be a hero(it's actually your only choice in many games). If you become a hero within a game, it should be because you've done something extraordinary. Being a hero isn't exactly as cool when there are about a 1.000.000 identical heroes.

I think the Drizzts outnumber the rest of his entire race. :D

Anyway... What MMO is actually like this? I mean, SRPGs sure but there aren't any MMORPGs where you are "the Aragorn". Because then all the player characters would role Aragorns. Which would completely negate the concept.

I don't understand the example, I could, theoretically, log into almost any game and spend all day in a virtual bar. Even RuneScape and Anarchy Online have more bars than I can shake a stick at... What games don't have virtual inns/pubs of somekind?

    Mmmmh.

PlanetSide. Gotta love that feeling of being one of the many in a big battle. One of the countless victims on a misty morning when you try to get a clear aim at one of those 3 walkbots as a few of your tanksrumble by... And you never even spotted the fighter that killed you.

Tho, sometimes you ARE a hero in PS. Like when you and 2 other guys guard the back entrance of a base and fight of 50+ guys while the rest of your army protects the front entrance. And they don't even respond to your calls for aid. But you manage (with a shitload of plasma grenades) to hold them back. Then, when you fear the pressure will become too many for you and the two other guys some heavy suits of your side storm up the stairs to attack the invaders.

Sadly I found those moments to be rare in PS.

And I found that one really can be "trader53432) in EVE. :)
  • XpheyelXpheyel Member, Newbie CommonPosts: 704

Whats ironic about EVE and PlanetSide is that there really aren't any taverns. At least not yet for EVE.

hehe about the "bare chested guy", I guess that was my way of stating that I want ultimate customization in my character. I want to be able to pick and choose my look and my characters "style" and still be effective in the game world. I don't want to be lumped into a category ... tank, healer or DPS. I don't want to be lumped into the "oh if you're a tank, you have to wear heavy armor or you wont get a group". the best thing about "pre-cu" SWG is that you did not have to wear armor to be effective, you could have a specific look and still work in game.

Thats where the Bare chested guy comes in, some people want to play the heavy armored Knight. Me I see myself more of a roaming nomad brute.

You hit the nail on its head in your last statement, I definately want a sim world or a sandbox ... a living exotic world that doesn't revolve around loot or raiding. The only place that made me feel like this was Pre CU swg ... for all of its faults it did feel like a living world and not just a game.

(as for a few other comments in this post)

I guess i could go outside and into real life, but I'm not sure how far i would get wandering from town to town with a giant sword on my back (I don't have a big enough hammer ) looking for jobs. I don't think the police would appreciate my nomad lifestyle

As for Darkfall, I have been following that game since 2003 ... It has some GREAT concepts and ideas. I just wish it was being made by a more reliable company. I have no idea if it will even be released but if it does you can be darn sure i will be one of the firsts in line.

No matter how hard I tried, I was simply unable to get in row three, spot seven of Aragorn's army in real life.

this is exactly what wurmonline strives to do and does.

I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.

The death penalties also tend to be a bit too harsh in real life

I have to agree with you. Good post.

Just because he wants his MMORPG to stray from the formula of the norm doesn't mean he needs to get flamed and told "There is such a place.... Ready....  IT'S CALLED REAL LIFE!  Damn dude go out and socialize ya numbnut!" It's statements like that that give game forums a bad name. Give the guy a break, he has a legitimate opinion.

Think you're being too specific. Look at all the games where questing involves saving towns, and vanquishing bosses. Only for another player to come along 9 seconds later, and save the town again, and vanquish the same menacing bad guy. They do try to give us the role of a hero, especially as we level up, as if we'll be a heroic titan among men when we get there, except so will everyone else in the game. It's just stupid.

Yes, but what fun are they? Is there any gameplay in them? Anything to do, but sit there and play make-believe by ourselves? Gaming is about challenges to overcome. Even when it comes to crafting, or being a merchant, it's about doing things, playing with the game mechanics. but, walk into a tavern in most MMOs, and there are no game mechanics at play. It's just pointless graphics.

Granted, it's a difficult example, because what could there be? Darts, drinking contests, barroom brawls? I don't know, I'm sure I could think of a few things, but the point is that there has to be some game-mechanics to play with, even when it comes to "fluff" or it isn't going to be much fun.

    When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.

Well, there's definitely a market for it on the single player side of things. Harvest Moon, Animal Crossing, and The Sims all basically boil down to this kind of activity. If you dropped elements form Harvest Moon, for example, into any standard fantasy MMO, you'd have a much more robust and believable setting. Throw in the possibility of mobs or opposing factions being able to attack the players farms and you have just expanded the game's depth by an order of magnitude. Try running a farm, for profit, while protecting it from bandits and roving monsters. I think that's what the OP was kinda getting at.

Games are also about social interaction. The idea is to get people to play together rather than having their attention so absorbed by the game mechanics that they might as well be playing alone. Taboo, Truth or Dare, riddle contests, even Settlers of Catan are more about the players interacting socially than fiddling with any arbitrary ruleset.
