You are correct, it is not a written in stone "requirement", and it is a trait that most if not all share. But, it has been a main trait since the beginning, so its hard to refute its importance in defining the genre. I think GW went in a new direction, and effectively created a new genre. MMOs are usually heavy on persistence, light on instancing. Guild Wars is heavy on instancing, and light on persistence. Thus my reason for saying persistence/instancing is the biggest (but not only) difference between CORPGs And MMOs. I have never played DnD Online, but I heard it was similar to Guild Wars in that it is an instance heavy game. Is this true?
I used to play Shadowbane also. A lot of people missed out on a very original concept with that one. i still drop in on the mourning server from time to time.
Reason why this game is a CORPG/MMORPG and not a waffle.
1.) A waffle has little squares to hold syrup. The guild wars box is flat so syrup runs off.
2.) A waffle mucks up your CD drive. The disk with Guild Wars spins correctly
3.) However, a CD in your toaster melts where a waffle comes out nice and crispy and hot.
4.) A waffle tastes better with butter than a Guild Wars CD.
5.) Noone ever says "Let-go my Guild Wars-o"
As you can see from the solid arguments it's clear that Guild Wars and a waffle are not the same thing. I'm sick and tired of people saying "Man this game is good, but it's no waffle".

Without a doubt guild wars is an Online Role Playing Game.
When MMORPG's orginally came out they could even support as many players that guild wars has in their towns. The town (non-instanced setting) is more massive than original mmos.
Today's mmo's can be massive as in everyone is in the same world, but are still limited due to shards/servers. You play with some of the playerbase but not all. Also consider how in most MMO's your endgame experience is 100% instanced with a few players (i.e. RAIDS). Guild wars just cuts out all that and make the whole gameplay instanced. So either way you are going to get instances or instances. One gets called cooperative while another is massive.
Guild wars, while much of the game play is instanced, has a more massive feel to it because you literally are playing with tons more people than any other game since you can play with EVERYONE.
Now some call that cooperative and some will call that massive (as in more a more massive number of players to play with than any other game).
This is all simply semantics though. If guild wars came out 5-10 years earlier than it did, no one would argue that it wasn't a massive gameplay experience. Some reason today we think in terms of millions (since some games have than many subscribers) but fail to realize how little of that playerbase we get to play with.
I'm fine with people calling guild wars a CORPG or an MMORPG. I just get sick when people say it's not an mmo so get it off this site.

Because MMORPGs got labeled as "Addicting", and got plenty of media attention from it. Sooner or later, government will step in to regulate it. By labeling GW as CORPG, Anet have successfully avoided from being targeted government.

Where have you found that information? Jack Thompson, a "lawyer" (well not for long) that has tried to use the videogame industry as a political springboard, wikipedia has fairly decent information on him.
But you just didnt rememberd something, each people has diferent likes and tastes, no one is equal. So for some people GW can be an addick and to others it cant. So i think we can say if GW is an MMORPG or an CORPG, thats what i think.
Each world as a Dark side and a Light side... Each side are in war and only you can decide wow can win... But be carefull, if you chose the wrong one the world will disapear as well as the others... The fate of all is in your hands and together will shall win... The Darknes shall disapear forever!!

You may thing that, but it is a CORPG. I agree it share MMOG concepts, but it stays a CORPG.
becose it was made to be cooperative play. i say its massive becose i can play with 3 million people with the same char.
i wont trade any other mmo system for the gw system , i love it the way it was designed to be played cooperative mode. its not a real life simulator , its a game , players know it from start and work in that direction.

Thats right! In guildwars players cooperate, unlike all those other mmorpgs.

I didn't misread the FAQ. Arenanet claims that Guild Wars is more likely a CORPG instead of a MMORPG. It still has ''MMORPG'' concepts.

Yep. A district can hold up to 150 people.
