The new type of protest that King introduced at the Bus Boycott was called “Non-Violent Protest”. King had decided early on in his goal for equal rights, that violence was no means of fighting back. King knew that being violent was not the right path for many reasons. He knew that for one, the protesters were outnumbered by the people that did not want civil equality, he knew that any violence that he put up would get him and all the people he loved killed. King also was a man of God, and was disgusted by the use of violence to get something you wanted. King had to find a new type of protest, so he looked towards his idol, Gandhi, and got inspiration from him. Martin decided that if Gandhi could use non violence to help fight for civil justice, so could he.

Martin was not just all talk, he lived by the rules he preached as well, even through some really tough times. There are hundreds of examples in which he lived by these rules, but there are some that really stuck out. For example, while fighting for equal rights, on some of his marches, people would often hold up demeaning signs, signs that would set a fire in your heart, and pump your hate to an extreme, but never did Martin or his followers lay a hand to someone for the sake of violence. Martin would never say negative things to people, nor hurt anyone, he strongly believed, with all his heart that violence was the wrong path in life. Another example of his non-violent protests is, during his recreational time, when him and his family were at home, he got hundreds of hate mail, death threats, negative criticisms, even the occasional brick through the window. One time someone actually blew his house up! But he never resorted to violence. He was sent to jail numerous times on trumped up charges, but never fought with the guards. Martin would just take time to contemplate his next move, one example of this is Letter from Birmingham Jail. He never let himself be drawn into the dark, and always looked for the good in people.

Martin once said, “Eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth would leave <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />America a blind and toothless country.” Martin realized that he would die by violence, and that he could possibly stop his death if he had used violence, but he stuck by his teachings, and he succeeded with his dreams. This is why Martin always turned the other cheek, so he and his followers could one day be free and be able to do what there hearts desired. This is why Martin turned the other cheek and never resorted to violence.
