Why is it so hard to actually get a good, well thought out discussion about certain topics? No wonder people kill each other over silly things in this world.
Having played Vanguard (and having high hopes for it despite my total distrust towards ANYONE that is in any way related to SOE) in beta and post release (friend actually bought it, gave it up and I'm finishing off his month. Got multiple toons to lvl 10-12 to get a taste of the different characters) I think I have a decent handle on the game.
Is Vanguard an awesome game? (and this is "as is" not its potential, where it will be, what it could be, etc... but what is is right NOW) Sorry it's not. Is Vanguard a bad/horrible/crap game? No its not that either. Overall its a pretty good game which unfortunately (but all too typically) was released too early. Its unfortunate that the design changed directions since I think this is one of the reasons it's unfinished. And PLEASE I don't want to hear that it just lacks "polish". Thats a fanboi avoidance of admitting that it is an unfinished game still in beta.
Overall when the game is working its still can be a fun game despite the cough...cough... lack of "polish". It can be frustrating to play at times (and this is too often for a released game). Depending on your character selection/starting areas/quests the number of "painful times" can be fairly uncommon to way too frequent. Which speaks to the unfinished feel about this.
Is this the worst release ever? No, not by a long shot. I've played too many darn games in beta and at release and overall while not a stellar let alone great release its not too bad. Not as solid as WoW (and yes I was on several totally overcrowded servers and ran into a few bugs) but IMHO a bit better then EQ.
Anyway I'm not sure that Vanguard will hit 500K users and if it does for how long it will actually keep them since I think they are aiming for a niche in a soon to be very crowded market. I for one will wait a few months, give them time enough to have fixed the major bugs and look for a 15 or 30 day free trial to give it another go. If I'm not happy then I'll vote with my wallet and go somewhere else.
For those of you that absolutely love this game then good for you! I'm happy you found a home. Its too early for me to make my final decision on this one.

ZOMG QQ!!!!! If you don't like it STFU and go back to WoW!!!!!!!!1111!!!!!!!1!1!!!!!!11!1!
Just kidding, I don't actually play so I have no comment on the game itself. As for your initial question I'll say this. When interacting within a faceless medium like the internet you just have to be prepared to encounter a lot of negativity. People tend to act out their frustrations in situations like this because it is 100% guaranteed not to end with them getting their faces punched to death.
Much of the interface is "borrowed" from other games, which is something they all do, and I suppose fits in the "if it ain't broke don't fix it" model. Crafting isn't exactly unique, but it's certainly in depth, much more so than most other games. I'm too new to determine how necessary it is.
Diplomacy is interesting, but again, being so new I can't tell how important it is. It's definitely unique in it's implementation.
I'm having a great time playing, and do see quite a bit of potential. Potential is tricky though... just ask former SWG or CoH players how that worked out for them

No, this game definately lacks Polish. There is a lack of Polish names, Polish locations, and Polish lore. Everything is either western european, Asian, or Middle eastern. There is a total disregard of Eastern European theme, hence, the game lacks Polish.
NNyan, I'm going to have to call bullshit on your post. For a guy who has "so much experience playing VG," you only signed up for MMORPG three days ago. And your name is oddly familiar to another guy on these forums who has nothing good to say about VG but then offers no proof he actually played the game. You are an illusion. I disbelieve.
Vanguard is awesome. That is all.
/just another old EQ1 player who became a Vanboi thanks to a great game.
Luckily, i don't need you to like me to enjoy video games. -nariusseldon.
In F2P I think it's more a case of the game's trying to play the player's. -laserit
Maybe you can't find a "good, well thought out discussion" because you start off calling people Vanbois, an insult.
How can you expect to have a good conversation when the first word out of your mouth is an attempted insult?

The game is with the best mmorpgs out there right now and that isnt much because all the mmorpgs out right now are just OKAY... nothing amazing
Now Age of Conan and Warhammer Online those 2 games i expect to get amazed by those 2 if i dont ill be disappointed...
Well now, that is a bit harsh. No need to jump down the guy's throat for posting a pretty fair post here.
There is such thing as an honest debate you know. I understand it's hard for people not to get defensive about something they love, but it's also not becoming of the product you all so vehemently defend when you act so aggressively. Not looking to flame anyone here, and if I get flamed for this then so be it, but the fact remains that there is just no need to act crazy on either side of this coin.
That's all well and good, and I suggest it to friends all the time, but awesome? Come on...
I am diggin it - haven't had that "pucker" game experience since EQ1 or in DAOCs frontiers. Might winid up giving me an ulcer bu it's oddly nice to be that "invested" in a character. I admit i did not have a lot of preconceived notions or hard expectations when I bought the game - in fact reading through THIS forum led me to believe it would be an utter toss of the dice since there were so many glaringly contradictions in what people were saying. I've played an awful lot of games in beta and in their untimely and oft bloody releases - this is far from being worse than other mmo's on rollout - and definitely not the "sky is falling" disaster some people are making it out to be.
Normally I don't feed the trolls, but I would like to add, in case it wasn't obvious...your post made no sense. I said the OP is not for real and you say I'm a vanboi. Ok and how are the two related?

It seems you missed the point of HIS post. In yours you clearly site that the op has only been signed up 3 days ago in an effort to discredit him, and as a response this person kindly pointed out that you have only just signed up as well.
Please, take a pill, relax, and breathe...always remember to breathe
I agree for the most part of the topic, meself also former beta tester and now into the full game. For me the game runs smooth, setting on high and 1280/1024res. Tried 1600/1200 but only able at none-rush hour times else it gets laggy at populated places. Bugs havn't really noticed them yet, but then again only have 2 chars (lvl6,lvl8) so hardly any experiance, but for now really enjoying the game, i really like the diversity of creatures, balancing is still in some parts a big issue but it feels truly amazing to see how big it is and how big it feels even when you take a teleport to another plane or zone you not even have a load screen...its *ZAP* you there. Now i have not seen these teleport devises anywhere else then in Lomshir so they might be exclusive for that place. The city in Mekalia is also something wich i find very entertaining seeing how many peeple participate in crafting, There is no where where a Gnome would feel more at home then in Mekalia . The way the vplayersite is connected to the game also offers lots of intresting features. But some of the sounds in the game also are far from polished i must say, for me it sounds like my X-Fi Elite switshes off and my onboard soundcard takes control with some cheap echo effects, for me it really distracts especialy when seeing lots of very nice area's,the sounds just don't do the scenery justice and then you have NPC's with those "hmm..uhum...Hmmm...hmmm, whats that all about? (in the beginning (beta) is was actualy funny, but now i really wonder who of the develop team came up with all that "humming" again speculating here "might be the sounds all of the developers make when working on their part of the game on their workstations". But apart from this i do hope that Sigil stay's as devoted as they are now to truly fix/balance/polish the game, if they continue that rate this game will become a hit. I do fully understand that for some its just not that hot enough but i would defintly say (atleast for now) give it another shot in 2/3 months, at the rate they are releasing patches with fixes i might not even take that long, but i think we always have to keep in mind that regardles how much more performance tweaks they can give the game it will always be a high system demanding game, good thing is that systems also improve each day sort of speak, so some might not be able to play it now but still able to follow it course and one day have that system that will run the game and if still intrested play the game how it was ment to be played. I used to play games regardless settings even if i had to put the settings at it lowest i would still play a game, currently since a few years if i can't play it on atleast high settings i just wait till i have the system that could. For now have the system that can
I looked at some of the posts and threads in these forums and just decided to try it because I couldn't trust the "this is game is best game ever made and has no probelms at all" type fanbois nor could I trust the "everything about it is horrible, nothings good, worst game ever" type haters. So I tried it and ... wow ... the haters were right sadly. It is, to coin a phrase, teh suck. Too many bugs and to much grinding.
Ted, thanks for the offer but I don't do pills; and perhaps you should do rehab and quit? Tell Lindsay I said hi.
I still don't see your point; and you clearly don't see mine. That is all.

I wasn't speaking literally, but whatever.
Oh, and Lindsay and I don't talk anymore since her and Wilmer Valderrama broke up....it's just not the same anymore.
See, my hesitant compulsion stemmed from the same place - distrusting the hyperbole from either end of the spectrum (sukc/w1n) - but my conclusion was the polar opposite of yours - I was prepared to not like it and more than pleasantly surprised at the breadth and scope it offered even for just-rolled characters.
Bugs? Sure what game is bug free at release - but no show-stoppers yet that I have hit.

I played DARK & LIGHT.
It set the bar for the definition of 'unfinished'. Vanguard is not at that level, but maybe only two steps up the rung from there.
