Lost all respect for Vavle today

ThriftThrift Member Posts: 1,783

I cant believe what I seen today when I join any CS servers, they have put up ads in game now on the score board. Also on maps like dust2 there are ads for portal and intel. Now I know this isent such a big deal to most people here but think about it if no one speaks up about this it will spread through every game on steam I bet. Steam if full of crap ads anyways.

What are your thoughts on this.

Are you paying a fee or subscription to play on Valve's servers? If not, then you have nothing to complain about. They provide you a service for free. You just see some ads. Big deal.

I'm already pissed at Valve at the moment because I can't play Counterstrike Source (or any other multiplayer Half-life 2 game).  I keep getting this weird DLL error and I cannot fix the problem.  There seems to be this obscure scripting engine supplied by Windows and only Half-life 2 uses it, as all of my other games work fine.

The fix for this problem seems to be to execute some obscure command that rebuilds this library, but this requires an XP SP2 disc ( I have an original XP disc ), and even after attempting to create an XP SP2 disc using another obscure feature of the SP2 upgrade, this obscure command fails.

I fail to see why Valve has not created a utility program to fix this given how important this library is to the functioning of the game.

No but other people ARE paying for it, I wont buy a CS server if its full of ads for intel and there games.

edit: me and my friend usually buy a 20man pub server for two months each summer, we have been doing that for the past three years. I dont think thats going to happen because of this new problem.

If the server host isn't recieving money for this, or hasn't given his express permission I'd be annoyed.

On the other hand isn't the game supplied free?

Can't he just use an older version of CS that doesn't have any advertising?

I don't play CS anymore cause of it :P I hate seeing adverts in a game i paid for. IMO it makes it unplayable and ugly and i lost all respect for Valve ages ago but this just makes them as bad as EA.

I've never had any respect for Valve, so I can't really lose it.

As far as the game ads go, I paid $30 for the game, therefore I shouldn't have to look at ads. That should be a server side stipulation.

I have gotten to the point where I ignore ads. Whether its a commercial on TV or a banner ad on a website. So it really doesnt bother me that they are dropping ads in games. I knew it was coming anyway. The USA used to be about freedom, mom's apple pie, and baseball. Now its all about "shop til you drop". What did Bush say after 9/11? Keep shopping. Ads are just another part of this.

Have you actually ever played a Valve game multiplayer?

If so you'd know this is a server host thing; just because they use steam (which is actually used to demographically track/sell you games direct download more than any personal use) doesn't mean they can just start flinging ads at us.

First off, I paid 50 bucks for my total of HL2/DoD/CS , why the fuck do I need to see ads in my already paid for games?

It's not like this is free ware man. It's not about the ads so much as forcing advertising on us because they can.

I am pretty sure the server side has to be given a royalty too, thats the world of advertising. You can't just free push adverts on people.

It's a shitty world, but there is still a matter of people need to get paid, it's basically the same as this site. Would they push ads for free?

    Hell no.

Heh, suckers. This is the price you pay for giving Valve money over and over and over again, rebuying the same, repackaged games.

Theyve made 3 mediocre games over the years, gotten you to buy each one 2-5 times over, then those little "episodes" for HL-2, get you to pay for "special" servers, then get even more money from placing ads on those servers you paid for.

Corporate greed has owned you all.

Any ads you see on private servers are  the responsibility of the private hosts.

If you want to see where ads are going in MMORPGs, play 9 Dragons.  Be sure to play until you get the Lightfoot running skill.  Then go to a decent size map and start running.  You'll find out quickly enough why I am against any and all advertising in MMORPGs.

The sad part is there are so many of you, the readers not the posters in this thread, that are saying ads are ok, that people like me are being drowned out.

I'll say it plainly.  No FUCKING ads in games.  Period!

My thoughts on ads is that they are actually fine as long as they are kept to the level we see them in movies.

Theres a decent amount of advertising in most movies, but it's very subtle.  It's no mistake that the semi in the background of that street happens to be a Coca-cola truck.  Or that the protagonist is leaning back in his chair drinking a budweiser.  Most people never think about it, but this is how advertising is done in movies.  It wouldn't be too difficult for the rubble lying around the streets in Half-life 2 to be, say, TG Lee milk cartons and sprite cans, and no one would be wiser.

If companies would be honest and pass the savings on to the consumer then I would be all for ads in games...unfortunately they are putting these ads in games, while simultaneously jacking up the prices to "cover the increased cost of production with new hardware"

It's a sad state of affairs.

And stuff like that wouldn't bother me at all, if anything it would make me feel more immersed, although I think a world where the only kind of soda(pop/coke, whatever you want to call it) is sprite would suck.

What's weird is that I just joined the "planetside reserves" where you can make a character and get him to level 6 without paying for the game, and they have in game advertisements for...Planetside.

I agree with this, but I think one of the issues is that the ads we see in movies and such, fit the genre. When they start doing creative stuff like what they think a Coke ad would be in the future or something, I think it detracts from the game because people look at the ad and criticize the artists speculation of a today company in the future.
