Some good RTS games

sheeshsheesh Member Posts: 330

Would anyone be kind enough to mention some good RTS games? I'm really bored while waiting for CNC3. Also,  tried Supreme Commander but it wasnt my cup of tea.

Thanks!

Company of Heroes was pretty kickass.

An interesting one you might like to try is Savage. It's a multiplayer FPS, but the commander playes RTS and does the building and directing of the players. As commander, you have a top down view and  you can drag a box to select players and tell them what you want them to do, like in most RTS games - whether they do it or not is up to them of course.

It's now a free game. You can get the most recent version here: http://www.notforidiots.com/SFE/

If you're into tactics and combat rather than diplomacy and complex resource management and colonization, I HIGHLY suggest Company of Heroes. It's an absolutely amazing game.

Check out some video reviews on www.gametrailers.com, that'll help you decide which RTS you want to play.

Rome: Total War (I'd advise playing either the "Europa Barbarorum" or "Rome: Total Realism" mod though)
    Medieval 2: Total War
    Age of Empires III

I like the Total War games for the campaigns, nice mix of politics and combat. I play CoH quite a bit over hamachi with some others, it has a fast pace to it and some good action, just wish it had a turn based multyplayer campaign like some other games. There is a mod in the works for it though that will sort be like that. CoH is a great game if you want something to tide you over until something els, just keep in mind it's not a turtle/fortress type of rts, you sort of have to keep on the offensive.

The Total War series isn't really RTS, but it's a fun strategy/tactics game for those of us who enjoy building up economies as well as armies.

If you want a good deal of destruction for no real reason, go with Dawn of War (if you're into sci fi) and its expansion packs(mostly Dark Crusade, only get Winter Assault if you just can't live without playing as Imperial Guard)

If you like the Dawn of War style of RTS but not sci fi, I would say go with Age of Empires

Company of Heroes was good. I played it in beta. I probably would have liked it better if I was actually good at the RTS genre. Unfortunately I suck when playing online because everyone generally either has a lot of experience with the game or with the genre and so it gives them a lot of advantages that an mmo player like myself can't beat.

The thing imo that matters in M2TW is the combat. The combat is macrobased RTS.

Age of Empires is a good series too.

Is Compagny of Heroes good to play in multiplayer ? I was a big fan of Warcraft 3 because it was easy to find a game in multiplayer and games would generaly last less than 45 minutes.

agreed. who doesn't want to see ten thousand soldiers facing off against each other with cannons firing on both sides? the only RTS its missing is realtime city/empire building.

I like age of empires too, i just hate the unit restriction limit.

No Change, each version of Heroes of M&M is more or less identical.
