How does a game get worse 6yrs after it was released?

I downloaded Ashen Empires today to check up on it and see what it was like now. It used to be called Dransik when it was in beta, but it sold out to a bigger company and became Ashen Empires.
Omg, I couldn't believe what I saw. The game is more buggy then a week into beta when I started! I can't even move! The Interface is slow as hell and the controls are just horrible. How does this happen? Why do people mess with games that are good.
