Do you care if MMO have good graphics?

SpetnautSpetnaut Member UncommonPosts: 61

hehe this may sound stupid, but I have a feeling the older people that play MMO's dont care about the graphics and can stand things like Rune Scape and Tipia. But us younger ones find them booring as hell

Yes! As long as my PC can handle it image. Im trying to stay away from games with bad graphics. Patiently waiting for Everquest2 and World Of Warcraft. Lineage2 is one of the few MMOs i like to play atm.

A MMOG needs good graphics, imo. I don't care about cuttin-edge suttf, though.

Eye candy is fine, but if the rest of the game is lacking it really doesn't matter. If eye candy is your top priority get a nice screen saver.

I would rather have graphics that are 'so-so' and great game play than a game that has super high end mega bandwidth eating graphics with screwy mechanics and no point.

I'd like cutting-edge graphics but to combine cutting-edge graphics with good gameplay has never been done in an MMO.... EverQuest II might beat that. The combat is the same old "Hit and wait 'till it's dead" but im sure theres tons of content.

I would prefer cutting edge graphics, but if the game has good content and gameplay, then I don't mind dealing with low end graphics, as I have played and enjoyed games like runescape and such, it doesn't bother me.

Sad though, people under 20 like me obviously don't like low end graphics.

Depends on what you call 'good graphics'.  A lot of people think anything 2D is ugly and low quality.  Myself, I think a game with high detail sprites like RO has far better graphics and is much more pleasing to look at than the latest, highest detailed 3D affair.  In that sense, yes, I do care about graphics to a degree, and I don't want 'cutting edge' stuff.  If anything I prefer 2D graphics that look handdrawn.

I'm willing to overcome them to a degree, ('Tractor' is a fun game in all honesty,) but for the most part I don't wanna go through the steps of building my character up when he's always gonna look stupid, (and the same as about 20,000 other people playing the game, but that has a lot less to do with this argument.)

As long as the gameplay rocks, the artists could have drawn on a piece of paper and scanned it in... If the gameplay is the best I've ever witnessed then I don't really care how bad the graphics are, but if the gameplay lacks somewhat then the graphics should make up for it. Ultimately what keeps people isn't graphics (in my opinion). It's eye candy but if you eat too much you'll get sick of it sooner or later, and then all that will come into play is the gameplay.

I would say if I could choose between gameplay with poor graphics, and equal level gameplay with good gfx, I'd of course choose the one with the gfx. But there are too many factors besides these points, I won't play a dead MMORPG as I am a bit of a socializer, I like to explore as well, which can be pretty hard/boring if the gfx are next to nothing. Also gfx have become a consistent, it is so easy to implement in a game, and therefore those games with success nowadays are the ones with a big hype about them and good gameplay.

Graphics and gameplay are but two of several points that need to be in order for me to purchase and spend time on an mmorpg.

Not really because what I care is mainly game play with mmorpg and if graphics I say at least some good 3d solid graphics like lowest kind of PS2 graphics I still play if gameplay good, but really is gamplay is the mainly thing for me, unless graphics are horrible to look at.

Grahpics don't make a game honestly, because you can have a game with amazing graphics and that's it. But where's the content? The gameplay? What do you do in the game? These are things I care more about because I love the fact of a never ending game, a game where updates are done every month with new content and stories. So ya, graphics = not my main attraction.

I have posted before about this topic, and I hate to say it again, but yes, I do care about graphics in a mmorpg.  It adds to the immersive feeling I get when playing in a convincing, realistically created world.  Gamplay and many other factors go along with Graphics for a game to be good, but for me, graphics is a key element in a mmorpg that I am looking for.

Yeah, I care, why else would I have spent $1000 on this piece?
Well, actually, I like a mix of graphics and gameplay, just the good graphics kind of add to the feel of it being another reality... if you know what I mean.

I'm 29 and I don't care about graphics one bit. In fact, some of the best games I've ever played were all text (the old MUDs). I've been very disappointed with the gameplay of the newer 3D games, starting with Everquest. These games all had good graphics for their time, but were never satisfying the way the text MUDs were. Not even close really.

There's just too many limitations when there's lots of graphics. I'm starting to see great graphics as a hindrance and a crutch for lousy gameplay, all due to the limitations of 3D games.

That's why I'm currently hooked on Wyvern :)

Well it appears the poll has only shown us there are a lot more kids that play.  Other than that, doesn't seem age makes a difference in the priority of graphics quality.

It's kind of like picking a girlfriend for me... if she's good looking, I'll try her out.  If I then realize she's a complete moron, I dump her for another.   Graphics will attract me, and gameplay is what decides if I stay or go...

I have a pretty good comp so I can take advantage of nice graphics but if the gameplay or content is crap, then pretty pictures don't matter.

  • herculeshercules Member UncommonPosts: 4,925

Not really but does not mean you should use 1999 EQ graphics in a game.Something like AC2(released in 2001) should be like the minimum standard for a 2004 game.

Like shadowbane released in 2003 had worse graphics then EQ in 1999 which was not really on(I know it been in make like forever but they could have upgraded the graphics as they went along).

Or take wish with point and click movement. The game will probably come out in 2005 and its using a form of movement from 1997 UO!Which to me is totally unacceptable.I believe lineage2 is using PnC too.

I like a game to have good graphics, I dont mind if there not cuttin edge, but if there utter crap it just subtracts from the enjoyment.

its like if you write a huge essay and its wrinkled and got a coffee ring on every off page.
it subtracts from the overall effect

I agree, because i like some relative good graphics because it helps getting into the game much better (i think) but gameplay is more important then graphics if the game has great graphics but no play-value then you can do nothing but look so that sucks big time.

but the best will be great graphics and gameplay when such a game comes/is out let me know image

I still play civilisation and old gold boxes....

No, I dont give a crap about graphics, they are nice to have, but not required.  Yet, at some point, I break away, I think a new game in 2d is doomed to failure, use to the first person point of view in real time 1 toon RPG style.   Birdie view is good for game based turn with many toons to control.  I will expect more from graphics in real time, but that is simply because it is beside my tastes to start with(real time).

Right on. Civ2, MOO1, and MOO2 are the best strat games out there and they're getting up there in years (especially MOO1).

I'd think there would have to be a certain level of graphics in order for a game to go p2p, and that level (for me) would probably have to be as good or better than runescape in the least.

As one of the old folk I have to say that a good mix of both is required, but for me anything with a graphical standard of less than, say, luclin EQ is unplayable.

I gotta say, and I hate to repost, but, my definition of 'good graphics' has nothing to do with number of polys or resolution of sprites, in general the actual technical quality of said graphics.  But just more with work.  IMHO there's a good handful of SNES games that are utterly beautiful when compared to even the most modern 3D games.  The aforementioned Civilization looks really good for the technical level of the graphics.  I don't care about the actual technical level of the graphics.  Being an artist myself, I appreciate the aesthetic value and work that's put into it.  A character model with only 20 polys or a sprite done in pixellated 16-bit can be really good looking if someone actually puts work into making them look good.  So my biggest concern with graphics is, that when I look at them and can say, "Good god I could do better than that with those resources," that's generally my turn off point.  I don't mind low end graphics, but for the love of jeebus, don't be lazy.
