Wow I haven't been here in a while...

Ok so recently I was helping with my GF's computer. She has some compaq computer that i dont know how old it is, sometimes it seems better than mine sometimes mine seems better heh. But her problem was that her DVD drive won't read some CD's. It is a DVD and CD drive I believe. So I brought over a spare drive to install into her expansion slot to test out if that would work. I set up the masters and slaves all correctly (I think) had it good to go. I plugged the cables all back into place, plugged in the power cable, and all I got was a blinking light on the back of the case and the power light blinks too. You press the power to turn it on and nothing happens. The light just blinks, it blinks whenever you put the power cable in. From my understanding of things this didn't happen because of me, although I guess it might have because I don't know everything. My guess is that somehow the PSU isn't getting power, or the cable is messed up. I dont know I did some research at first I just thought that her computer was weird and it had to wait a while before you could try to turn it on. Also, I don't know if this helps at all but when you take the cable out the light remains blinking, only it slows down untill it eventually stops. Hope someone out there knows whats up haha.

Sounds like you plugged the IDE cables in wrong.  Undo the cables you messed with and I bet you it will work again.

Make sure all of the power cords are plugged in on the motherboard. The 20/24-pin power cord, the 4-pin power cord and the (not all computers have this one) 5v power cord.

ya, i only had like an hour to try to install it for her so i had to leave before I could start to actually figure what went wrong. I also can't really concentrate when shes goin "so its broken now? oh well thats nice, it won't even work, why don't you just leave if you broke it!" its not broken lady. So shes mad at me cause she thinks she has to buy a completly new computer now and her parents would make her pay for it and junk (um lady i'll help ya pay for it).

Faulty connections is what I thought. I didnt even think to check the motherboard at the time. I just focused on the slave/master stuff and the power cables to the drives. ALthough some of the cables were hard to get out so I might have yanked another out in the process...

It might actually be that your power supply is not strong enough.  A faulty drive connection would still start the computer up becouse usually when you have to trouble shoot your computer  you disconnect these first.  I say check all the power connections to your motherboard are ok and try again, if that doesnt work, then disconnect all the drives (dvd drive cd drive even hard drive) and restart if that works its either one of two things your connections were wrong or your power supply is not strong enough.  If it doesnt work its something more complex.
