I'm not sure they are buying them, but it appears that Microsoft will be publishing Bioware's games.  I saw something about this in Sigilgames forums.  One of the MGS reps was saying they will stay out of Silgil and Bioware's way and let produce great games. or something to that effect.  I'll post a link if I find it.

I don't really think M$ can stay out of anyones way. When it comes to making games. they sure knew how to ruin AC/AC2. image

You know when Microsoft first bought Bungie way back in like 1999 I was really worried that this would mark the end of one of my favorite developers. But it turned out okay and in fact Halo is without a doubt Bungie's highest quality game to date, and Halo 2 will own everything!

Personally, I think MS buying Bioware will be a good thing, cause Bioware makes very good games with lots of depth and quality, but their quality support and testing is absolutely pathetic! I mean NWN was unplayable for many people it had so many bugs when it first came out.  And KOTOR on Xbox actually had a bug! A blatant bug on a console game! That's just sloppy work. Now maybe some of the blame rests on Bioware's publishers Atari and Lucas Arts in those cases, but still.

Personally in favour of MS buying Bioware!

I'm a bit dissapointed.  I always liked Bioware, and now they will just get mixed in with the gigantic Microsoft.  Who knows what Microsoft will do with them...probably scrap the entire team and wreck all of their good games image

Yes, this is definitely what MS likes to do, they like to buy up game developers, fire everyone, and cancel all their projects, then shut down the company.  Because that is how they make so much money.

I think they would want these companies to continue working. They need more and more great games to come out for Xbox, and if they are planning another console already. They are going to need to have more then just one amazing game to come out with it.

M$ buying bioware will be a bad thing as they'll be no more original pc games from them. Xbox all the way. M$ saying they support pc gaming is alot of crap.
Bungie's creator is gonna start a new company and use Halo engine for the pc game. he said it was a mistake to sell up to M$.
All M$ wants is to monopolise the games market for xbox 2 and make more money like they did with the OS market. They hate competition therefore they buy them hehe

Yeah, right now BioWare is currently working on "Jade Empire" (looks like KOTOR-style game in feudal Japan/China?... anyways looks like a great game) and two "unnamed games" that they stated in a press release awhile ago. I think they said one was for the console and the other PC.

Why would they go to lengths to make a platform where x-box and computer games are compatable with each other if they didn't want those games to be playable on a computer? And what about Vanguard?

At first I had a likewise impression that Microsoft buying up a developing company is bad news, but it's really not.

Microsoft generally leaves the developer intact and integrates the company into "Microsoft games." It's actually how Microsoft makes some pretty decent games as opposed to their other programs *Cough* Windows ME *Cough cough*

Many of Microsoft's games are made by other companies:
    AOE, AOEII, Freelancer, etc...

Some of their games are made inhouse that have turned out OK like the Flight Simulator series, which are OK other then the horrid memory management problems in the early editions.

Atleast when Microsoft takes over a developer that developer is given more resources to work with budget wise and can produce a suprior product. Just don't try to get support for it because Microsoft tech support generally stinks (I know who does it, that's how I know.)

Yes not all take-overs are bad for the community, like said before microsoft can offer (if they want to) a better working atmosphere for a company because they can give "unlimmited" resources to help the develloppers take their time to produce a better game as long as microsoft doesn't interfear (?) and want to "change" the game i see no problems. k a monopoly is bad but there are still some other strong independent companies left.
