I downloaded the trial and have played for a few days. I like most of what I've seen so far, but there are a couple of issues:
When doing a mission, will it always be like this: run a mile or two, kill a few mobs, then run all the way back. I've seen ppl flying, so I guess I can move faster sometime later, but for now it seems like 90% of the online time is running...
Are ppl really playing this game? I'm lvl 7 so far, and done some exploring. Which means I've spent a few hours on it so far. Still, I've only seen ONE msg in the chat window, and I've only seen a dozen other players, or so... And all servers are always low populated on the selection screen.
Will I find mission contacts if I explore more, or do I only get missions from those I'm sent to from previous contacts?
Is it possible to rotate the camera/view without rotating the character? It seems I'm only able to see my character from behind.
Comments
freedom tends to be the largest server, i also have a character on triumph which seems to have a pretty good populatio
the contacts, i'm not quite sure about. i'm pretty new to the game as well.
the rotation, yes, it's completely possible to do that, i rebound mat left alt key to enable a free look without rotation. i'm not sure what the bind command for this is tho, i'll have to check my setting and let ya know. ALSO.. something that drove me nuts as far as the controls go.. if you hold the left & right mouse buttons it acts as movement (pretty much like a standard mmo) BUT.. if you hold them for longer than 3 seconds it auto toggles on runlock and i was forever running past shit, there's a way to rebind the action of both mouse buttons so that it doesn't toggle this runlock thing.
i hope this helps to some degree, the official forums are a wealth of knowledge, and CoX has a great community.

Also, the missions get longer. You have very short missions in the beginning because you level so fast and are just getting warmed up. Honestly traveling is much less of a time sink in this game than any other MMO I've ever played. If anything the delay is switching between the different zones for a long travel - but even that's less of an issue all the time due to game changes.
BTW, you're using the "Sprint" power, right? It's not as fast as a real travel power, but does speed things up for a long run.
Well it will vary by what time of day, what server you're on, and which side (Villains is always less populated than Heroes). However, your criteria for judging is off. Public broadcast is a terrible place to chat. Most people spend most of their time in instanced missions where you wouldn't be able to see them. And most chatter takes place in SG channels or player-made "global channels" dedicated to earning badges and other things.
If you want to team up with people, make sure your flag is turned on. In the team window (click "team" above the text box) is a drop-down. Set it to "Looking for Any" and I'd be surprised if you don't get an offer before long. Now unless I'm in charge it may not be the most efficient team with a lot of running and a little bit of waiting for other people. But you will definitely see other players.
Also a common misconception: the servers are supposed to be "low" on the server selection screen. It's possible it was light when you were on. But even with 2000 people on at once it should still be green. So don't judge by that.
And I should add I have exclusively been on the Test server for a while trying out stuff for the new release. If you're still playing in a week or two I guarantee you'll see a difference in population when that goes live.
Not really, that's not how it works. You meet contacts by being introduced by ones you already know. This saves time because you're not just randomly looking. What you should do is go to "King's Row" as a hero or "Port Oakes" as a villain. A contact will pop up called a "broker", it's an informant for villains or a police officer for heroes. They give you a newspaper or a police scanner, which you use to run missions. Every few of those you get a "mayhem" or "safeguard" mission, which are different and fun. (And can be tough.) Then after that mission is over, they introduce you to a new contact. You can do that until you've met every contact available in your level range. The one exception is a few of the special add-on zones. Hollows, Striga, Faultline, Croatoa. These have their own contacts and own story arcs, and you don't meet them through the newspaper system. What should happen is when you're the right level, one of your contacts will ask you to go talk to your first contact there, and then you have a chance to do all that zone's content. If you're impatient and you know where to go, you can talk to that person beforehand and start w/o getting introduced. But don't worry about it - you'll never find the right person just searching randomly and those zones are skippable anyway.
Hold down your middle mouse button, or the PgUp key, and move the mouse to rotate the camera. You can click the PgDown button to reset it.Currently playing:

I'm going by memory so the terms may not be exactly, but if you look you should know what I mean.

Thanx a lot, folks - I'm even more inspired to continue playing now!!
Nice to see that this thread became useful to others too
If you can't wait to get a travel power and are low level, there are temporary travel powers to be earned in missions.
For example, the first mayhem (level 5-9, so a level 7 villain can do it) grant fly for 2 hours of gameplay (last me all the way to 50, but I use as needed, not always), the second mayhem (level10-14) give you a super jump temporary travel power for 2 hours of gameplay as well, never run out of it, but stop using it at level 14 as I get a real travel power.
Some missions will give you jetpacks as well, but I don't know them all, I know there are at least 3, just don't recall which.
