Mmorpg.com community - what happened to you ?

RattrapRattrap Member, Newbie CommonPosts: 1,599
What happened people?

Since when this community turned so bitter and agressive ?

Is there no possibility to write even a most simple post on this forums withouth being attacked with no reason at all ?

Since when this forums turned into bunch of people that post here just to insult everyone and everything.

I mean i can understand bashing a game you dont like , or even criticising a certain playstyle or guild, or company.

But today it seem people just go into various forum posts and write hateful angry messages unrelated to anything.

I have respect for many of posters on this site...but it seems most of them have given up. There is just to much random hate ...

I really hope this is not the end of mmorpg.com community

Relax, rattrap. Some people read the topic line of your LoTRO post, but didn't take the time to actually read what you wrote. You may want to change the headline for it, it is a bit misleading for those who just pounce on post without reading.

Edot: I see you did change it. Should get a little better response, now....hopefully.

    I hope you are right.

Some people are posting , withouth even reading the posts ... just automatically attacking.

Hopefully this is the neglectable minority ...

Rattrap does have a point though...people on here have been a little out of control. Like take Vanguard players for instance. I read this long thread and put in my 2 cents, MY opinion, and i got flamed by some loser who was all in my grill thinking i didnt belong there. I put in my 2 cents in a SWG thread a while back and no flames at all...not even from the vets. I mean come on ppl...EVERYONE that logs on to this site is allowed to post where ever they want. You dont like it tough...deal with it and move on. geez...ok im done lol

It is. You gotta remember, we're getting more popular and more people are coming to this site every day. Some of those people are bound to be trolls, post pouncers, etc. It's just part of the game with any website.

I think the OP has a very valid point.  On one hand, one has to be expect a fairly unimpressive level of discourse in a video game forum.  In terms of civility, though, I think we've fallen pretty far below the rest of the field.  It hasn't been a sudden change.  I'd say it was more of a gradual evolution, one in which we changed from a community of friendly hobbyists to angry nerds.

In looking to answer why, I think perhaps the veterans here have themselves to blame more than anything else, for we are the constant, the propagators of cycles.  For every one of us that suggests an idea, a dozen parrot it, giving birth to this forum's own little set of memes.  When we flame a game just once, even if we acknowledge that statement to only be our opinion, that flame quickly turns to rhetoric.  That rhetoric in turn goes on to become part of a greater pattern.  In the end, there is no way to discuss games but in divisive terms, slamming any opinion or idea you don't agree with.  There cease to be differing viewpoints, replaced by only two types, those like your own and stupid ones.

I think many in this forum have reached the point where they can step back and realize what has happened, but I don't think there's anything that can be done about it now.  It's very easy to dial up the anger level in a discussion.  It's much more difficult to bring it back down.

Rattrap, I agree that LotRO is a good, solid new mmo with what seems to be a good gaming community so far. With that, I want to let you know that you will surely run into some players who only play the game to cause frustration and anger to other players who are enjoying the game. That's what we call a "griefer" in the mmo world. As the population for LotRO continues to grow as I expect that it will in the coming months, you will undoubtedly experience more and more griefer type players. The best policy is to learn to IGNORE them. Likewise, with any given post you make on these forums, you have a chance at getting flamed, ridiculed for your opinion, or teased. Your best bet here on these forums is the same as handling a griefer in an mmo. Ignore those posts unless you are ready to start up a debate with someone who only intent is to flame you and your ideas.

I prefer a much more challenging and hardcore type of mmo myself, but I salute Turbine for releasing a super polished and fun to play "mass market" mmorpg. They should see much success with this game, especially with the title brand name.

If you enjoy LotRO so much, play it and enjoy it. Don't worry about who doesn't like it and if they play or don't play. The game is bound to have enormous success regardless, and your own fun level depends on lot on how much you learn to ignore the BS and focus your attention at those players who enjoy the game as you do.

actually if you watch this site enough you'll see it goes in and out of that sort of thing regularly depending on the releases at hand.

We'll pop into a nicer phase soon, just in time for the flames to fly about AoC or something.

    Old cycnic here.

The trouble with MMO's is that people play them.  The trouble with forums is that people post on them.

I have found that generally people dont like anything that is different from what they think it should be.

So unless you become a hermit you will always have to deal with people.

    Life sucks.

Have you been reading the WoW and Vanguard forums again, young man? What did I tell you about those places?

Seriously....I have no idea why people take things so serious.

I remember one of my first posts on the forums got me flamed hard in the WAR forums.  Since then I've sort of learned the "rules" on how to write posts that don't invite flames...it really comes down to how you write it.

If your writing style is challenging, expect people to return with combative prose.  Think of it as a gauntlet that's been thrown down, someone will feel the need to pick it up and smack you with it.

I don't let it bother me much... if the flames get too high I just quit reading the thread and move on to another one...and I don't get into post wars with others about who is more "right".  (Because most of what we say here is our opinion.)

You would (of course) be correct as people should be allowed to post wherever they like.

However the problem starts when people pile on a title just because their mothers cousin's son says it sucks. I've seen a number of posts by people who've never played Vanguard, WOW, LOTRO, Archlord or any title made by SOE..

Yet and still those titles still suck because cousin jimmy said so......Riiiight.

So you can understand why folks in those forums might get a bit jumpy when the uninformed are only there to start trouble.

    To OP:

It's not the community, it's the games. Every few months we wait for a new MMO, and what do we get? Yet another WoW clone. The industry is rising, but what are the real fans losing? You should be asking the developers this question, not the community. Some of us are tired of waiting.

ps: Oh and if you take anything said over the internet seriously, than I really do feel sorry for you.

What has gotten me so angry is how every new game from the last year was being torn apart by the same trolls (when I say torn apart I mean blatant flaming). Now they find LOTRO and love it and if anyone has anything to say otherwise or tries to post something constructive they won't have it and attack them.

I also have a thing for being devil's advocate especially with the underdog but I always try to keep my posts relatively constructive as long as the person I converse with does the same.

Also to the poster before me, that mindset is the problem. We don't take the internet seriously anymore. People act like complete lunatics online because there are no rules or guidelines to follow. It's only been the last couple of years this has happened where the internet became so readily accessible. Of course there have always been griefers but it has gotten to the point where we're being out numbered by them and it's getting out of control.

Feels like it has been this way since I've gotten here back in october/november.  At this point I've stopped posting as frequently as it isn't really worthwhile.

If you make a provocative thread title to get attention, don't be surprised when that attention doesn't consist entirely of hugs and flowers.

Also, telling people that don't like your new favoritest game ever to shut up, and gtfo, when you don't follow your own advice, as some pointed out in your thread, isn't going to win you many friends either.

That's how it works. Kind of like gang wars. The LotRO fanbois go over to VG fanboi turf, and cause a ruckus, then the VG fanbois go into LotRO turf, and return the favor. Or WoW, Eve, SWG, whatever.

Rattrap what is your problem?  Ok you like LOTR.  And you are freaking out because most people don't like it

So you think people that don't like it should not be allowed to state why they don't like it.

    Are you nuts or what?

These guys make some good points.

Add in the fact that many people skim read, missing the more subtle points, and you get a good recipe for mudslinging.

And thusly, the thread about the MMORPG.com community being overly mean has now come full circle.

It must be global warming... everyone is going crazy lately

Seriously now, there are some people that like to flame everything that you say just for sake of it. There is nothing that you can do about that i think :=)

Let them enjoy in that ... i guess

    Cheers :)

IMHO people like this: http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/thread/128098 (a horrible example in the Vanguard forum) have killed the community here.

It's gone from a group of people who loved and had a passion for a genre of gaming that is unique and growing faster then anyone could have imagined. We used to support each other, we used to question each other differences not make fun of each other because of them. We seeked out those that knew more than we do and we appreciated other members thoughts on different subjects, now the people here only attack when someone doesn't agree with them.

The moderators stopped moderating based on individual instances but rather put into place broad sweeping rules that don't allow for circumstance and on top of that, they favored members that they deemed better than others.

In general, that's what happened Ratty. This isn't a community anymore, hasn't been for a long time.

Sorry, I don't agree, I guess we all experience some things differently.

I won't make a smart ass comment along the lines of "rose-colored" glasses though, although I appreciate you making my point a little clearer.
