In the event that people are being judgmental on a product that only just released with the shrinkwrap off, there is always room for improvement. With that said, here's what you can look forward to in the upcoming future for this title. (If you did not know already.) Just something to keep in-mind when you next look at this title and think it is lacking. http://www.cityofvillains.com

It was quite obvious from day one of Beta that this game wasnt yet fully fledged and was never going to have the appeal to keep gamers for months. However the game is designed not for those people who play for 14 hours a day. It is designed for those who play occasionally, and those who enjoy the 'grind' for what it is. it is a journey where you develop your character and learn about the city etc.

CoV and other expansions will be out pretty soon and this will add more variety and life to the game also. No MMORPG is ever released in its complete state. They get the game into the market and then patch it and expand it gradually.

CoH has done a very good job because unlike most releases it is not bugged. The low level content is there to enjoy and the city is there to explore. The enemies are varied enough for now, and i haveonly seem 6 or 7 out of the 'gangs', of which there are lots more to find.

Give the game some peace and wait until the expansions are out before deciding the game is crap. Rushing through a single player game is no fun either if you dont stop to enjoy what you are doing.

4 stars sucks :( i want my 5 stars back!

Just to clear up my age, I will be 41 in a few weeks... image

I started playing D&D when I was in high school (when it 1st came out 78 or 79?) I have since played many p&p rpg's including Marvel Superheroes (where instead of receiving influence as in CoH, you got karma for defeating bad guys & you lost karma when you did something against character).

Edit: I used to play D&D online (back with my Commodore 128 computer using a 300 baud modem on Q-Link)! Aahh, those were the days.

For all those that responded regarding their age, perhaps we should make up a super group (you know maybe The Fantastic Old Farts) or something like that.

    Peace

It blows after 2 weeks, nothing to do but kill over and over, the only thing that changes is how the mobs look.

ADD MORE CONTENT PLZ! Something to do other than fight mobs. It's like a brawler turned mmorpg, without any RPG type content.

After my initial thoughts that this was a fun fast paced game, i found i couldn't be bothered if i logged on again after 3 days.

Almost all the mmorpgs i have loved i initially hated them at the beginning...i never thought  asherons call would lose it's place in my heart to Daoc....but it did :) I enjoyed Daoc for 2 years and had seen enough of Coh after 3 days....

Maybe my at 40 i'm getting too old for mmorpgs. I'm still having a hour or two on Swg and that is enough for me at the moment. After all the ranting i've done in the past i still prefer to do a few bh missions on Swg than hit countless cuckoo clocks in Coh.

Yep, there's no ownership of anything. I'm not sure why that's a big attraction for people, but it is. People really want something to call their own and in CoH the only thing you can call your own is your unique super hero. That's enough for me right now. I would love to see them add some things in there like having a building for your super group to hang out in a do a little practice PvP and the sorts. I think it's too late to add an economy system where you could actually control or own warehouses, offices, etc., which could contribute to your influence or even create enhancements (which would need to be at a slow rate). Would love to see supergroups get special missions from some entity like the mayor of the city which then could be handed down to members of the super group to perform. The missions could be more elaborate that way by focusing a longer story line with having a special arch villian for that super group to try to take down but would take somewhat a long time.

It's not a bad game. I hate to keep saying what others have said but it's not a game for everyone. I love ownership of things in game but it's not my biggest thing or otherwise I would just play Sims Online.

I have not got a single character over 16, but I do have a few different types and I still enjoy going on missions with people, working on the tactics, especially the more difficult things like an 8 person mission for a higher lvl party member.  They are tough, you gotta think and when you do win out over the odds it does feel good.
Having said that, I think it unfortunate that some people are being turned off the game at this early stage, really if you want high lvl content don't play the game yet, wait and see what happens after a few patches and the expansion.   They did their best to get a good playable game out, before the big wave with WoW and EQ2 comes and washes over, and I can understand why they had to do that economically.  But to do that they had to sacrifice a few things from initial release.
We already know the game will change dramatically due to the villain/PvP expansion, and some of the things they are also putting in like supergroup HQs.   There is also the main storylines to go in, with invasions and so forth, so I assume once you get a character to the lvl cap the reward will be to be able to take part in these things as well as whatever they end up doing with the PvP bit.
But basically to me this game is about people more than objects or lvls, they have given us a beautiful world, were you can express some creativity in your choice of costume and powers, and I for one am still having alot of fun working with others on missions, experiencing new group dynamics, and learning the tactics for each power i try.
I am sure PvP will add an extra dimension once I have worked everything out on the computer oponants, and I can see this game being stimulating for a long time to come.

i'm just curious but, wats the point of buying something like CoH and throwing it away later? just enjoy wat its like now, and wait till it gets better. if you dont like it now, wait till it gets goodimage

Your right Nathan. Theres no really reason to bash it no more. I will quit :)

Sometimes what happens it when it doesnt meet your expectations, we vent on the forums to ease the pain, and to seek if theres others who feel the same way.

And i think im going to call quits for now, because the game i want to play Cityofvillains wont be out till 2005. I will be all over that. Gosh, looking at that website cityofvillains.com made me halfway pissed. This shouldnt be that far off, it should have been added on release of the game.

Now my biggest applause to COH goes to the Sidekicking system. Ingenious idea, allowing people who dont have the time to still be able to play with the friends and guildmates. Good Job on that. Bad job on keeping pvp out of the game to 2005.

The point is it should be good at release... But by your point I am glad you agree it sucks right now.

I have not played in 5 days and i still don't feel like playing.   I already cancelled my subscribtion.  I played AC for 3 years, AO for over a year, i played COH for 2 weeks and i'm already bored.   That game lacks depth, only thing to do is kill bad guys.   It gets old real fast, i'm wondering what kind of feedbacks that game will be getting in 3 months when everyone will have 8 levels 50 toons.

Wow what flamers.  The game doesn't suck, its just too repetive.  Wait ofr City of Villians.  Instead of bashing try ocnstructive criticism.  Point out its pros and cons.  I find it very enjoyable.  Most people quit becuase they can't get to level 14.  By level 14 people WANT to play more so if you didn't get to 14 just shut your mouths because you really don't know crap about this game.

LOL !  I don't need to make a 4 pages post to describe that game, i'm only stating my opinion here.  So if i don't agree that this game is good i'm a flamer eh ?   I said the game is boring cause it's repetitive and there is nothing else to do but kill, kill, kill, rinse, repeat, you even said that yourself, what else do i need to add ?   When a game lacks depths like that you don't need 30 pages to say it.   Yes COH has great graphics, yes combat is innovative, see i can post positive things, but reasons why peoples keep playing a MMORPG is because they have MORE then just kill, kill, kill.

Why should people have to wait for an expantion for a game to be good to play?? Why should people have to wait for an expantion to have fun? What a stupid closed minded statement. Every person here is commenting on the current state of the code. If you like it thats fine post your opinion but don't tell others what to do when they post theres. And for your FYI I am level 23 and the game still sucks so I guess my opinion counts. image

So people want to basket weave or do some other trade skill during there down time from killing instead of going back to killing? Is owning virtual property really important in MMORPGs? People complained about Planetside not being a MMORPG because all there was was fighting. Does this make CoH not a MMORPG too (even though it's not PvP fighting)? What makes a game in-depth? What makes a MMORPG or any game fun? I love first person shooters and all you do is kill, spawn, kill... I think they are still fun. I have played a few different MMORPGs and some I thought were fun for a good while, such as UO and Neocron, and some that I never renewed after the first free month, such as Planetside and AC. I'm not sure how CoH will rank up there since I have had it less than a week but it's definitely funner so far than quite a few games I have played. I think you really have to love grouping with people to go battle some AI. That is basically all there is to this game, but somehow Cryptic made it fun to do so. If I just heard the description of the game, there would be know way for me to understand how this game could be fun. I guess you really can't read a book just by it's cover.

Aguitha, this really wasn't just aiming at you. It's just that because it's kill, kill, kill, and more kill doesn't mean it can't be a fun game to someone. Cryptic did stray from the norm of MMORPGs and tried something new. Obviously some people are finding it fun because right now it has the highest rating on this site. I agree some people are going to find this boring real quick unless they make some changes in the near future. I for one still haven't explored every area and cities in the game, fight everything there is to fight, or ried every type of character I can try. Once I do all of that, then I'll probably get tired of the game. Once I did that in UO I had to take a break because I felt like I did do everything I could in the game. I don't need to have something else in a MMORPG such as a tradeskill to do something when I'm not fighting. I can sit in one of the squares and talk to people or just shut the game off.

ok man look I'm gone make this simple if you love comics  your gone love this game if not your not gone get it and your gone get bored. Have you even payed attention to story lines at all. You say that after 15 you get a lot of outdoor missions well this maybe true but before level 15 most of your stuff is indoor missions. You dont think that superheros spend all there time fighting in buildings do you. Heck half time they are out side. Look its not forevery one I been in this game sense beta and I have yet to find any thing wrong with this game compared to all MMOG I have played. This game is the best MMOG out. I'm sick of worrying about armor and money and all that other crap. This game is so simple and so much fun to play. Theres no pressure to find some way to keep up with your armor so you can do your job as a tank or trying to figure out how you should train so you dont gimp your character. I'm sorry you dont like it. You say its all kill tasking but how is that any different then EQ, Shadowbane, DAOC were you sit in same spot for hours on in killing same thing. At least here you get to move around and go from one place to another. Well I'm sorry you dont like the game and hope you find one you do like. I my self will be staying with CoH till WOW comes out, Nuff said.

You'll be suprised at the age of people here and playing CoH. There's a discussion of this in the General Discussion forums. I'm 34 and started out playing RPGs with a pen, paper, and dice. I moved to MUDs in '92 and then started with UO when it first came out in '97. I always thought I was a rarity but am finding out that this is pretty common.

Edit: I just looked under your user info and you are older than me, but I'm not sure how to define "a bit older" :D I also looked at other ages in the CoH forums here and seems like the average age would be in the upper 20's.

LOL pen paper and dice..... reminds me of the days when i used to play the Lonewolf series (Kai Grandmaster anyone?image) and the bloodsword series with my brother (we used to cheat all the time tho' lol.... if we lost to a monster we'd fight again till we whoop his a**)

on a side note: repetitively does not equal not fun. you can do the same type of missions with different people. believe me you'll see different results.

A lot of people have posted on this stating that "City of Heroes is not for everyone", and I will tend to disagree; no game is for everyone. It's an axiom of gaming (or, one could claim, engineering/design in general) that in trying to please everyone, you will please no one.

What kinds of people does City of Heroes cater to? Several categories.

    1) Complete newbies. You don't start off as the snot in someone's nose at level 2, you can do a few things, leap off walls, shoot funky beams of energy, use some Matrix-like combat stances, whatever. You are someone. The game helps you a lot, giving you a very detailed interface that will never let you stay lost, it will tell you where to go next, know which missions you have, where they are, etc. Even if you are not very experienced, I don't think you'll have problems.

    2) Casual gamers. It's extremely easy to play with others, in groups - teaming up is very encouraged, there is lots of code that supports superteams, and having a mentor/sidekick system lets low levels still able to hang out with their more powerful friends without dying constantly, and still gaining reasonable experience and helping out. You don't need to play 8 hours a day just to keep up.

    3) People looking for a new game - this one is new and promising - I'll take that over a game that's been running for years, people around me are huge in levels and have equipment I might not even have the opportunity to get any more because the mobs that loaded it aren't in the game any more. There is a big expansion (City of Villains) coming up, which makes it even better.

    4) People looking for something different; there is nothing like it on the market - as opposed to fantasy-based and space-based MMORPGs, which are counted in the dozens, and have very similar features to one another.

Could it be better with more depth in the traditional way (an economy, items for loot, etc)? Maybe. But I am hooked up enough to sit around and find out; I think that's a lot up to the individual. This way works for me, it might not work for others. I'm quite pleased. :)

Why a 10+ hour a day gamer would NOT expect to get bored is amazing. Football rocks - but its only on for a few weeks. Basebell is boring, it runs for months and months. Heck, sex with your sister is great once, but doing it day after day gets, well, umm, you cant compare it to that

I've had this game for a week - ish. So far I have created all the char types, played them all to around level 8. This game is cool. I hear alot of comments about how the game has no economy. Well, there isn't a huge economy but, there is one. Instead of cash you get influence. These influence points can be spent on enhancements which beef up your powers. You can buy and sell enhancements as well. So you say no economy yet you can buy and sell power enhancements and you can purchase inspirations (quick temp buffs and heals and such).

As far as the game being boring. Well, this game has a GTA-ish feel to it as far as controlling your charactor but, the customization and uniqueness of powers makes it fun. Also it's faster paced than ..well, say EQ for instance. You don't have to spend forever sitting around doing basically nothing but, waisting hours and hours...days and days making some item so that you can "grind" better... This game skips that sitting around for hours doing nothing aspect.

There is alot of babble here... hope most of it makes sense. I'm at work so I'll shut up now...
