WoW and CS... I hate them....
Best:
CoX, FFXI (sometimes), and Guild Wars beta (I have not played retail for very long, Beta was awsome and for some reason I didn't like Retail).
Also I could have swore I saw another topic like this hmmm.
No real contest for best: pre-NGE (and particularly pre-CU) SWG (I played Lowca, but didn't matter. Community was great with SWG). Followed close second was the community on Horizons. Great people.
Least favorite community? Probably a free MMO grinder. I like 9Dragons, but community isn't its strongpoint.
I like most of the communities in the games I've played...mainly because I hang out with folks whose company I enjoy. I stay away from areas in the game with the people I don't like. I think the community is what you make it. And I've always tried (and succeeded) in finding folks who make the game-time enjoyable. Why play an MMO otherwise? (unless ganking is your thing, and even then you probably find other gankers who share your spirit of nastiness)

I have mixed feelings for DAOC, I met my best online friends in it but it is also like being in high school, everyone has there clicks and if they dont know you, you are never given a chance to prove that u are a decent player.
For all the other games iv played they all seem to have a decent community, none are outstanding, but also none are as bad as WOW.
also yes i know that all of wow's community isnt 13 year olds or 30 year olds acting like 13 year olds, its just a very high population compared to every other MMO.

A little addition, RF online was my 2nd best experience with the community
East Carolina University, Computer Science BS, 2011
--------------------
Current game: DAOC
Games played and quit: L2, PlanetSide, RF Online, GuildWars, SWG, COH/COV, Vanguard, LOTRO, WoW, WW2 Online, FFXI, Auto-Assault, EVE Online, ShadowBane, RYL, Rappelz, Last Chaos, Myst Online, POTBS, EQ2, Warhammer Online, AoC, Aion, Champions Online, Star Trek Online, Allods, Darkfall.
Waiting on: Earthrise
Names: Citio, Goldie, Sportacus
Best: Would have to be WOW. Sure, they have their abundance of immature players, but at the same time I have never seen so many folks willing to help others. Basically, a good lively community despite the fact that most of the gameplay is geared towards solo play.
Worst: Everquest II (Antonia Bayle server mostly). Biggest bunch of rude, self-entitled asshats I've ever seen.
Worst : Maplestory
Best : FFXI
Best: Warhammer Online
Worst: Vanguard
Best = FFXI
Worst = WoW
Worst = WOW
Best = DAOC
and why is that? We don't become people till the game goes live? Who the hell have I been talking to the last 6 months /scratches head
and why is that? We don't become people till the game goes live? Who the hell have I been talking to the last 6 months /scratches head You've been talking to those chat robots you can download from yahoo.
Seriously though, its not a complete community mainly because betas are not massive.
Beta = Limited amounts people due to restrictions.
Released = Unlimited amounts of people due to it being on the shelve at your local gaming store.
So choosing it as a best community is a bit illogical.
Best: CoX and SWG (pre-NGE, post combat revamp . . . have no idea what it's like now that they set their old player base on fire).
A little off topic, but I will mention WoW because it seems to be everyone's favorite game to either have an irrational hatred of or to come out swinging for. In WoW I met way more people than in any other recent game...more of every kind both ass hats and cool folks. Certain areas bit (barrens chat..gaaaaah!), but on average I'd say the people playing were no worse or better than what I encountered in DAoC, EQ, EQ II, AO and any number of other games. The ones I listed above really were the only ones that stood out in my mind as really bad or especially good.
I don't want to write this, and you don't want to read it. But now it's too late for both of us.
Worst... I've never tried any free to play MMORPGs, so I will say WoW... Other games like CS goes without saying

One of the first graphical online game UO had one of the best communities early on in the game during what I'll call any game's "discovery stage" which is when its fresh, new and everyone is a "noobie". 3 to 6 months after that, things will change as with every other community would. You'd have your digital divide of the "haves" and "have nots", your mature players vs the kids and your goof-offs vs the jackass-griefers.
EQ for example. When it first released, it was one of the first truly beautiful lookng onlne game *at the time*. Nothing much could compare to it visually as a game or has as much "exploritory" content before. You needed a community to survive. I remembered the first few weeks of pioneer chat as we talk about zones, discovery and such in general chat.
Compare that experience to one 6 months later, and its a different kettle of fish.
So I personally think that the life cycle and the character of any MMO would look like this :
New in the market : Usually this is beta, so everyone's here to try the game out, usually great community with general sharing and friendly chat
Discovery stage : Community gravitates towards helping each other to survive, discover the world they are in, as everyone in the game are noobs
influx stage : Game gets critical mass and more and more new players sign up, the community now becomes vulcanised bettween the haves and have nots .
mature stage : Your regular WoW chat. Basically, there is no filter that would prevent jack-asses or morons from signing up and playing the game. You'd have the good and the bad. Depending on the ratio of true game players vs jack-asses ...your experience the community will differ.
End of cycle stage: The game is now old news. Only the hardcore, the dedicated or the ones who really love the game world are now still playing. More often then not, the community reverts back to being one that welcomes and actually be of "use" to any new player to the game.
That's more or less my take on the "online game community" cycle, and I think you'll find it to be true to most MMOs.
Silvarianne
Stage 1: This is where the community is down the shiiter. The game is full of noobs(notice how a noob is an obnoxious player, while a newb is a new player) who hack/scam/cuss/ruin gameplay/racists/blah/blah/blah. It's basically full of players who purposely try to ruin the game for everyone else in some way. The only games I can really think that are in this stage are Endless Online(Now they are in code red on this one), Maple Story(They're in code yellow, not quiet as screwed. There's still decent people there), and Gunbound(Also at about code yellow).
Stage 2: This is where a lot of the games are at. Basically the community is at a null to new players. Until you get to a certain point of the game where you absolutely are forced to interact, you won't hear a word from anyone. You'll walk around town and kindly ask for some sort of direction, and while it's full of hundreds of people, not one person will respond to you. This might as well be as annoying as being in stage 1.
Stage 3: Ah, a rare breed. This is where most of the community is polite and insightful. People generally try to help you out no matter how foolish or ignorant you are. This is also where you will easily make friends and find parties and guilds. You'll not only find people here who will point you in the right direction, but they will go out of their way to assist you. I've found this type of community in WoW, City of Heroes, Ragnarok, and a few other games.
The above is but only my opinion, but if you study the topic closely you will notice that there is a lot of truth in my opinion.
Also pardon any and all gramatical errors I may have made.
I've played many games, and the ones that I play change weekly. Currently I am very interested in Gunbound, Poker, and Kwon Ho once more. I am thinking of returning to Maple Story and Ghost Online.
Best: WoW
Worst: Runescape

"Argueing online is like running in the special Olympics... even if you win your still a retard."
Worst: WoW
- oh, and free to play MMOs are a joke, if you go there and expect anything remotely related to the term "community", you are deluded
Best: EQ2. Whilst the worse would be WoW. For basically the same reasons that Fugnudz gave. Maybe I should have played on a different WoW server because the rudeness of the one I was on made me finally quit (after maxing 2 characters).
Worst game community... Hmmm... let me see. This is tough. I really don't know since I mainly play games with good community base. If I were to say a game like WoW I would be lying since i've never played WoW and i'm never even going to dare to play that damned game.
Ahh here we go. Gmod! Gmod itself is an amazing game. BUT the people that play it are idiotic and have no idea what they are doing. Many servers are full of players trapping eachother with blue dumpsters stopping them from having fun. The idea of gmod is to be creative and constructive. But a lot of people choose to be devious and destructive. Also the forums are full of the most critical people i've met. Sadly nothing pleases them.
Best = WWII Online - Sorry but it probably is one of the best communitys out there by far.
Communities a bit hard thing to define because it all depends on who you come across. But I'd say free mmos have the worst community, esp. Rappelz when I played that(or WC3 if we count non-mmos incidentally, horrible immature community). Fondest community maybe Everquest, solely because you experienced a lot more of it meaning that you also experienced a lot more good and a lot more bad(idiots etc)
Of the free games that I have played, I'd say Goonzu has one of the better "communities" i have seen. The problem is that like many other free games, it would attract more then its fair share of idiots and morons simply because, hey, its free.
That isn't saying that pay to play games are much better as a whole, look at WoW for example. Depending on which server you play on, your experience can go from one extreme to the other.
Generally speaking though, PvP centric servers tend to less enjoyable for the "newbie" then RP centric servers.
My experience on Tichondrius (pvp) was much better then the one I had on Archimonde (pvp) but both paled compared to my Feathermoon (RP) experience.
Having said that its all really about the luck of the draw, but chances are, there are more people out there being jack-asses then actually being a "good community" player.
The best.. I liked a lot of ppl in RO..
