I probably like the community in the private servers I play (Yes, I play in private servers, OMGZ NOES I'M GOING TO GAMERS HELL!) particularly Ragnarok.
Seriously, from Diablo to new titles like RS or Guildwars. Free to Play games may vary in their communities a little, but generally, there are loads of players with the social intelligence of a rat.
Why is that? - Because it attracts young players. Why do young players suck? Because young players are mostly male. Why do young, male players mostly suck? Because they're experience puberty. When I was 15, playing Jedi Knight with some friends, we used to hack, flame, talk s**** all day long and we thought we were soooo unbelievably cool... Although, we were not, of course we were not, male teens are 95% hybris-deluded wannabes that lack any sense of social competence. And HELL, this is how it's meant to be... Sidenote: I'm not talking about ages 17+, I'm talking about the hard-boiled "stupid monkey" years (12-16)...
Soooo, does that automatically mean older players are better. Of course not. Players at the age of 29 having 10 hours a day spare-time and use them to play MMOs are - of course - psycholgically off-track and are of course suffering from a certain degree of para-social behaviour. And I'm not talking about the little addiction that plagues us all (by choosing a hobby that ruins our backs and our health), I'm talking about the fair amount of people with REAL problems.
So, what you probably wanna look at is a game where most of the players are NOT PC-MMO-target-audience but still offers content that does not appeal to many kids.
This could be EvE, with a large amount of IT-students and employees or generally tech-related, mature people. Very nice crowd, even the pirates ("just business buddy"), or LotRO on an roleplaying realm, or even WoW on a roleplaying realm with many next-door housewifes or dads that wanna dive in another world sometimes...
So essentially you're looking for:
- Ages 20-40
- Median weekly time played 8-14 hours
- Student or employed (somebody who has something to do with their time)
In my MMO experiences so far, those we're the people I found nice, polite but still emotional and funny.
Oh yea, ignore what I said (or flame) if you're that 38-year-old virgin or that 13-year-old-moron who just reached cap and is raiding 50-hours/week for the next super-uber-epic-ultra-sword-of-endless-destruction.

I think the gaming community is way to diverse to make such generalizations about players based on age and hours of gaming. You are allowed to have your own opinion though.
p.s. I am not one of the 38 year old virgins that plays way to much......... I'm only 35!

Worst: All MMO communities
Best: All MMO communities
35 is still young, my grandad is nearing 76 and he still loves World of Warcraft (he's old, it's easy for him)and Halo 2.
Although NEVER try and get him off his consoles when he's playing the Medal of Honour series... i swear he's like Fred Flintstone when he doesn't get his way
Worst community: SWG (NGE) & World of Warcraft children. We got to hate the gimme gimme on both.
Best: Ultima Online & Saga of Ryzom. Always helpfull people around to clear any doubt.
There are good polite children and spoiled ones on both, the choice merely reflects their numbers. Same applies to good decent people on the above games. Problem is, even if you join a nice guild there will be plenty of rotten apples inside.

Thats awesome, I love to hear about gamers playing into their golden years! Tell him to keep fighting the good fight!
My best experience with any MMO would have to be with Asheron's Call. Far and away we had the most fun of any of the late 90's 3-d MMOs. From wonderful, monthly dev content to all the player owned bots that made life easier, AC had the richest and most enjoyable group of players.
My worst experience would have to be WoW. Never have I had a harder time working towards any achievable goal then in WoW. PUG or even guild instancing was always hit or miss. Atleast one out of three times I went Instancing it turned into a debacle of some sorts. Either through ninja looting chests, people going AFK, trash talk,or just plain stupidity, it all made getting any small goal accomplished a giant fasco.
Best is BY FAR: Lord of the Ring ONLINE [On Landroval, the unofficial RP Server]. A lot of people role play and many of the players seem to be 25+, really mature, kind and considerate. Not all of course, but most.
Worst: Star Wars Galaxies [NGE] tried it out and I've never felt so damn alone in an MMO... everyone was just kind of doing their own thing. I may have been able to really converse/role play with another player about twice in my month of play. It breaks my heart because I love Star Wars and I really think it's the absolute property to make an amazing MMO... but SWG isn't it.
Why do I write, create, fantasize, dream and daydream about other worlds? Because I hate what humanity does with this one.
Best: 3-way tie between Pre-Trammel UO, the current remaining community in Planetside, and EVE.
Worst: Vanguard and the beta SWG players
WoW has such a large and varied player base it's hard to lump them all together in my opinion. I've been in top-end guilds with jerks running the show, and I've been in bottom-of-the-rung guilds that were full of very nice people.

AAH! A troll fire! Quick, pour some Kool-Aid on it!!!
Just going by my experience..First on my list is a browser game called Faith..Rude people..Next i was trying D&D Online..Been playing about an hour when someone asked me to help in a quest..Explained I was brand new..He said"that's Ok..."
when I showed my in- experience in a quest ..I got a hardy f*** you.
best - pre-CU SWG. by far the best community ive ever been a part of.
worst - vanguard. there is no community. if/when i found someone they didnt want to group up 90% of the time. the game felt like single player on a shared server.
Because it's very inaccessible (and pretty much non-existant), caused mainly by game mechanics and target audience.
Best: L2
Oddly enough, I would almost say. In between the bots and farmers there are actually some players and they make a very tight community. L2 lasted 2 years for me, solely because of the people. I hated the the game: the grind, the bots, the farmers.

Playing: Final Fantasy Online: ARR, Destiny Most memorable games for me: UO, GW1, LoTRO
Some of the Best: LOTRO, World War II Online, CoX.
Some of the worst: The SWG forum community sucked; in game community much better. Other than that, of the games I've played, never had too many complaints.
_____________________________ Currently Playing: LOTRO; DDO Played: AC2, AO, Auto Assault, CoX, DAoC, DDO, Earth&Beyond, EQ1, EQ2, EVE, Fallen Earth, Jumpgate, Roma Victor, Second Life, SWG, V:SoH, WoW, World War II Online.

Best: GW Guilds. Because the PuGs are so extremely bad most guilds actually are very cool and fun. They need to be, else there's nobody to play with.
We are the bunny.
Resistance is futile.

Worst ever: FoH website.
Worst 2nd: Official forums, uberguilds with an evil agenda.
Best: In-game: SoR & CoH/CoV pre-nerfs (the nerfs sour the players)

BOYCOTTING EA / ORIGIN going forward.

- Anarchy Online: not too friendly and forget socialising, but mostly met with helpful players.
- CoV: same with AO
