Last i heard he was still working on SWG i hope this inst true but from what ive seen it sure looks like it with the bright colored rancors and pokemon crap.Well mr icony starwarsy youve failed along with your emperor boss smedly there palpatine tryed to rush the death star into the fight unfinished it didnt work either lol.

    That was a good read.

Its to bad it all went down in the first place. Leasons learned I guess. It is to late for this game no matter what they do with it at this point. And the band played on...........

Good article, love seeing the truth posted like that.

Man, I still occasionally get so pissed about the NGE I could spit.  This was my first MMO, I just couldn't believe the interdependencies.  As I was learning more and more with my friends who'd been playing long before I started, I was like "I can't believe they've got this much stuff in a game!"  I miss the old game greatly and still hate SOE/LA for what they did.  I have my own little personal boycott of Sony/SOE/LA goods.

A note to any of those who seem to have some problem with people still missing this game with words like 'get a life' or any other psychological babble, get lost.  This is my life when you do-gooders pay my bills and my taxes, then you can tell me what to do.  Until then get your own life and quit trying to live or worry about what I do with mine.   I just had to rant about that too, while I'm in the rant mood.  I'm tired of seeing those posts.  If my psychological makeup is so distasteful to you, then by all means, hire me a shrink, I'd gladly have a little chat with him/her.

Great article. I got a lump in my throat too when I read the bit about CH's saying goodbye to their pets...

And the best part for me... Smed saying they wont make major changes to VG because of the lessons learned with the NGE... Oh the irony when you consider if any game could do with a freakin enema its VG. He truly has no idea whatsoever and has ridden a very very fortunate horse to get to his level of ignorance. Ive said it before and Ill say it again, a monkey could do his job in these times and fortune will no doubt smile again as he retires just when it starts to get really tough in this industry over the next few years.

    RIP SWG

While not on the same server, myself and a number of other CH's were in theed showing off our pets and in general reminiscing about the death of our game.  There were enough of us there that a gm came and threw down the gauntlet saying we were causing a disruption and that if we didnt disperse we would find our accounts banned.  I was not alone in laughing at the guy and telling him go ahead and ban, I had already cancelled.  Suffice it to say he just left and we were there til the game died.

I remember in the week prior to the NGE going live there were always at least two or three CHs in Theed, on Ahazi, just sitting there with pets out, in a macro loop with emotes like /cry, silently protesting the impending Order 66 on the CHs and their beloved pets.

The SWG developers and suits simply did not have the slightest kriffing idea what it was that made players tick.

    They still do not.

CH, Jedi, Commando, Smuggler, BH, Scout, Doctor, Chef, BE...yeah, lots of SWG time invested.

    Yup.

They completely destroyed everything that made SWG special, and turned it into just an "everyMMORPG" with a SW skin. They didn't understand that while Star Wars made it cool, that alone was not what made SWG special. CH, BE, Dancers and Musicians... IDs... this is what made the game special. They never got that, and never will.

Yes Obrak is a fanboi.  Yet he's a lil more articulate than that.  I think he's one of the few Pro-NGE guys that deserves leniency, if not outright amnesty for the fact he is a nice and friendly chap lol.

I'd be willing to try swg again if they fixed crafting/economy back to pre-cu.  I want decay/death penalty, crafting all making superior items then loot drops and a reduction in crafting costs in line with pre-cu which where implimented with the CU.

I'd be willing to try that game again.   However, I think they are in love with Loot quest rewards like WoW.

People like you are exactly the reason that SOE has ANY justification in doing what they did/do.  If you "truly love the original SWG" then you wouldn't pay for the NGE.

Anyone who likes the NGE has NO CLUE what a good game is supposed to be.  Congratulations, target audience.

I've never touched NGE or heard of it for that matter, so I can't speak to it.  However, I "did" love SWG.  Most of it was the community and friends I had on the server.  Then there was the flexibility we had to run our own events and all out wars.  There were lots of ways to customize your characters, appearance, housing, a lot of the various things.  There were a number of things that they did right, but it was sadly outweighed by a lot of stupid things they did.

I'd remind AveBethos though that people play games to have fun.  What you consider fun and what others consider fun are not going to be the same.  I enjoy old pen and paper RPG's on the weekend and jumping out of planes, but those things may not be for everyone.

I'm sorry to have to bring that stark reality to light, but you can't go making generalizations like that.  I'd argue that people who make generalizations like that have NO CLUE about the goal of gaming itself, leaving them ill-equipped to make judgements about what games are good and which aren't.

.... but then that is just my opinion and not a fact.

There are players out there who really enjoy the NGE, and well, they're welcome to it.  I will not berate them, I did that once and a longtime friend dressed me down something fierce for doing so.  I had the exact same opinon as AveBethos.

I've learned to communicate my displeasure in a different way since.  Attacking fellow players is just not the answer.  A lot of elder Jedi did this in their bitterness, and I think it was very wrong of them to do so.

I recall being involved in a discussion of this aspect on the Ahazi boards right after the NGE struck.  A pre pub 9 Jedi was commenting on how he thought the NGE was fun, andhe was getting flamed.  I had to concede that the NGE did have some fun aspects, but it was not the fun I signed up for...seing as CH, my favorite profession, had been exterminated and all my effort into building a Jedi toon was obliterated.

What a great article. Of course every single one of us has written that same article about a gazillion times since the beginning of 2005. And what the hell is this crap about 'things look promising again'. The game still sucks. Go play it for a week, you'll be back in WoW so fast it'll make your head spin.

I will forever remain baffled by decisions made concerning swg. All you need to do when looking at WoW's numbers is scratch the surface and you see than over two-thirds of those subs are generated in Asia. Blizzard is so successful because they attacked the global market with games like War2, 3 and Starcraft. Starcraft in particular has a massive following in Korea, it's like Elvis. So when WoW came along it is completely understandable it met with so much success. Those guys knew exactly what they were doing.

SOE & LA never made an attempt to break into the asian market with swg. Actually from what I've seen they didn't try much. SWG was an exciting and innovative project to be on pre-launch and through the first year, but after that all the talent and direction driving that game drifted away to other projects. Now the dev team is ten guys in a room in austin playing solitare and waiting for emails from hotjobs.
