Looking at that I'd say that your observations, while not entirely inaccurate, are a little off. EVE is still up on average 10k more subscribers online(avg) than they were this time last year.
I couldn't help myself and started a new trial on Tuesday just to check it out. It only took me a few hours to remember that there is no way I have the time or ability to get involved in this game but EVE still stands, imo, as the best MMO on the market as of right now.
EVE will continue to grow unlike most of the rest of MMORPG's that peak after release and die or the ones that peak shortly after then die etc. EVE is the only game that is on the market that has over the past 4 years increased subscribers rather than lose them, this by itself proves the uniqueness of EVE and the abilities of CCP to provide players with what they need to continue to grow and enjoy the game. Every road has its bumps (t20 & the goon propaganda) but CCP's commitment to its players proves that this road will continue and improve, unlike other game companies (SWG/SOE) that force unwanted changes or ignore their players needs (which turn to demands then lost subscribers).
Just finished my first month of EvE, really enjoying the game and planning on opening a 2nd account today..... think this one will be a keeper for awhile...

Here's what you have to do because no one else's opinion will be the same as your own:
Read about EVE on every site you can find info, then, read some more... And when you are done with that, read even more.
Then, if EVE still looks interesting to you, set aside 10 days of "free time" (as much as people in the real world can) and tryout the free trial. Complete the entire tutorial, ask questions, ask more questions and then... (yep) ask even more questions.
THEN you will know if playing EVE is for you, until then no matter how many people offer their different opinions you will never know.
Ok, seems like good advice! Can I ask you Kovah, how long you been playing? What percent of males play Eve? Do you any links for free trials?
I'm not Kovah but his advice is pretty good. Though I think he emphasizes a little too hard on the 'read about EVE' portion. I prefer to recommend 3 things:
2) Once in game join EVE University. It is quite simply the best move a new player can make. Do the tutorial and the first missions it sends you to to get some isk together. Then do the missions on your graduation paper. Then join EVE University.
3) Don't stress on isk or skills. Enjoy the game. Too many people are too focussed on being 'Teh Ubah' instead of just playing the damn game. There's no need to be 'teh ubah' in EVE. It's not about who is the best ever. It's about working with your corporation to accomplish the goals you set for yourselves.

As far as me, I don't play EVE anymore. I'm a fortunate fellow that my woman also plays MMO's with me but I couldn't get her interested in EVE thus -- I still play WoW...
Hey, how long you guys been playing Eve for? Seems like a good game judging from the reviews I've seen on eve-online.com. The game has certainly got stunning graphics.
I've been playing since the dreaded "new game enhancements" enforced by Lucas Arts and Sony Online Entertainment, which were anything but enhancing. I suppose it was December 2005 when I created my character.
Thank you SOE and Lucas Arts! IF you hadn't committed the largest act of wire fraud in the history of "online gaming" I would never have discovered EVE Online. Thank you again.
I emphasize the reading portion a good bit as that's what *I* like to do. Before I tried EVE forever ago I read and read and read to make sure. Needless to say the more I read the more I wanted to try it. Joining EVE-U like Taram said is also a great idea. Even if you are the type of MMO'er that enjoys a more solo environment you should join a corp.
I forgot to ask how much time do you have to dedicate to this game Have most of the Eve players graduated from playing other MMORPGs
Been in eve for going on 2.5 years now, came from other MMOs (but be honest I've started looking at them as Massive Single-player online roleplaying games).
That said you may want do the trial 2-3 times. there are so many paths that you can eventually take in EVE that you may want to experiment with several of them and you won't have the time on the tutorial.
I've been playing EVE for about 2 years now (since the SWG combat "upgrade").
In my opinion the biggest mistake people make with EVE is saying, "I want to PvP, but I'm going to wait until I get more skills and isk first". Don't get me wrong, when you first start playing EVE you should stay in empire until you get a feel for the game, but it's really easy to fall into the trap of putting off PvP until you finish that next skill. 95% of the fun and content in EVE are out in 0.0 and lowsec.
You can have loads of fun PvPing in cheap ships right from the start. The important part is finding a good corp to have fun with.

QFT. This is something I try to make newbies realize when they talk how they think they should stay in empire and grind missions/mine/etc. Also the feeling that I need this or that skill won´t disappear probably ever. At least I still have it and I have been playing over a year now.
I personally stayed the first 6 months in EVE-University and while I think it´s good organization, I felt I learned during my first week in 0.0 more than I had learned during that 6 months in EVE-Uni. Also realised I could have managed to live in 0.0 much sooner but I also had the still need these skills to compete syndrome...
IMO attitude is what counts 100 times more than your skillpoints. You can jump to 0.0 right away if you have corp that provide you with tackling ships and give you loan to buy decent ratting ship when you get enough skills. If someone feels like they might wanna make that jump convo or evemail me(main name in sig)
Bingo. I'm a noob and I'm lovin' the game. Does anyone know how many active subscribers the game has? MMOG charts hasn't updated in about a year so I'm curious as to where this game sits on that list.

The charts update every 6 months. Last one was either last month or two months ago.
What's kinda sad is no one takes into consideration how many of those are second/third/fourth/fifth/and in extreme cases sixth+ account to the same person. What's also sad is how EVE almost forces you to get a second account.
Comments
However if you look this is first time in like almost 6 months that they made to break the record... last time was before T20.
AND ... there still is not more than 170 000 subcribers on the game (stated by CCP btw check their forums).
But is EVE dying ? no I don't belive so... however it have been quite stagnant for almost 6 months after T20 .. that is pretty bad.
This may sound odd, but my guess is I'll subscribe because I have absolutely NO IDEA how to solve a certain problem I'm having.
To me, that's a good thing.

I don't think the t20 incident really had any major impact on the number of subscribers.
And if people quit over the latest CCP misconduct episode, they were idiots. The allegation was largely false and exaggerated.
