Well.
My pc started playing up yesterday while playing my favourite mmorpg. It was as if I was being alt tabbed onto my desktop. Anyway I decided to run a virus scan. Low and behold my PC had been infected 40 idd times according to AVG. AVG couldnt get rid of the virus so i had to install McAfee. McAfee seemed to find it.....over 438 infections.
One called PWS-MMORPG.gen.
PWS-Mmorpg is a trojan written in Borland Delphi, that attempts to steal passwords information for popular online MMORPG games. It also contains functionality to post this information to a remote website. When executed, it drops the following files in all available drives, including removable and floppy drives.... and so on
And there was one called PWS-Legmir.
This detection is generic, and designed to cover many similar password-stealing trojans. This includes trojans written in multiple HLLs, including MSVC, MSVB and Delphi.Users are recommended to use the latest engine/DATs combination for optimal detection, and ensure the scanning of compressed files is enabled. These password stealing trojans are typically designed to steal passwords from various different sources, as well as information for the "Legend of Mir" game if it is has been installed on the victim machine. It mails this information to the trojan author at various email addresses. Since there are many variants of this trojan, this description is a general guide. When run, the trojan installs itself on the victim machine, typically in %WinDir% or %SysDir% , using varying filenames
There was another one but it wasnt recognised by McAfee.
Not sure if this is old news but ive nto downloaded any executables lately and this just seemed to appear. If you dont use a virus program id suggest getting one. And for those that have one get scanning!
Anyone else came across this before?
Comments
Nope.
You didn't mention what game you were playing. I hope it's not SWG because I just installed the trial lol.
Me either. Did you report this to AVG? Maybe they can add a patch to fix it.
AKA - Bruxail
Was it a SONY game...because i Herd that their software use to..or maybe still does come with a virus of some sort.
It sounds like a keylogger. if your downloading addons or mods u probley got it that way.
yep, this is more than likely the way you got it. especially if you are playing a popular game like wow, try and stay away from 3rd party websites or websites that you do not trust like worldofwar.com and thottbot.com.....those two examples have been known to upload keyloggers onto your computer.
As far as I know, it wasn't sony's games that did this, but rather their cds. The spyware installed made sure that you legally owned your music and kept track of your usage. Sony is a large company, and is smart enough not to install trojans like the above on a users machine.
Havent played WoW in nearly a year. Havent downloaded any mods or addons. The game i was playing was LOTRO but i doubt the game has anything to do with it
Okay stop blaming Sony about the trojan.
For information about the trojan visit http://vil.nai.com/vil/content/v_142170.htm
Apparently you got that trojan probably from visiting those infected sites. They have crap security and probably someone hijacked the host or the banner ads (if they didn't do it themselves) to implant the virus as an embedded DLL file that infects you when you visit the website. The function of the trojan seems to be stealing wow account passwords in WoW Taiwan.
If you are a person that macros you will run into this. I am betting that's what happened to you. No I do not trust you. Cheater.
Probably got those keyloggers through website adds.
Downloaded any hacks recently? :P
Nothing in the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and consciencious stupidity.
yeah LOTRO is still a pretty popular game and you don't have to download anything to get a keylogger if you don't have the right security on your PC. just going to 3rd party websites that have anything to do with popular mmog's will have a chance to infect your computer with these keyloggers, in game currency selling is big business.
lol
People who have to create conspiracy and hate threads to further a cause lacks in intellectual comprehension of diversity.
You serious?
I left my pc running last night and Mcafee notified me of more infected files... how on earth has that happened. All i did was leave my pc downloading.
"All I did was leave my PC downloading."
That's it, right there. You downloaded a virus. If you are not careful about what you download then you can get your computer infected. It does not have to be a .exe file and you do not have to double-click it yourself.
Be very careful about what you download, and only download from trusted sites. And keep both a spyware and a virus scan package on your computer, and active and resident. And if you're smart, a good firewall like ZoneAlarm. But even with those you have to be smart about what sites you visit and what you DL. Otherwise, you will get an infection.

Firefox is also nice.
For security I can recommend:
------
Firefox + the NoScript add-on (Just be careful of your settings or it will hose this site and others)
ZoneAlarm for personal firewall
Webroot Spysweeper for protecting vs. Spyware. It also has anti-virus built in.
AVG anti-virus
---------
Install all that, and you are relatively safe. Mind you -- you still must use your judgement and be careful about how you search. But ZoneAlarm will not let any keyloggers be installed on your system without you knowing about it.

I've not used firefox in a while. Think i'll start again. AVG could not get rid of this virus.
