Since i stopped playing WoW 6 month ago i have been bored bored bored...
I have bought every new release, bought a fair number of oldies, signed up for every beta, played every trial/demo going and downloaded every single free game going. Some of the free ones are dire to the point of feeling really really sorry for the guy who put his free time into it, but out of all them (not tried Dofus, downloading atm) this is by far the best, by miles... it its own league even.
Definately worth ago! It's basically Diablo with surprisingly fab graphics, a friendly online community and WSAD if you prefer. Everything you do is for some quest and the lootage is constant! No grinding necessary! Perfect (within the realms of free games).
For all the complainers, one word - ungrateful.
Enjoy

And the thread isn't at all misleading as DR actually costs to play it in the end?
While it IS free, it's far from 100% free
Played so far: 9Dragons, AO, AC, AC2, CoX, DAoC, DF, DnL, DR, DDO, Ent, EvE, EQ, EQ2, FoMK, FFO, Fury, GW, HG:L, HZ, L1, L2, M59, MU, NC1, NC2, PS, PT, R:O, RF:O, RYL, Ryzom, SL, SB, SW:G, TR, TCoS, MX:O, UO, VG, WAR, WoW...
It all sucked.
It's not misleading at all. The game is 100% free to download and free to play. You are never required to purchase membership AND membership is not required to access any current content. Free players may level to 100 just like paid members.
You are definitely given incentive to pay for membership, but you never ever have to do so.

The game is completely free. In fact people playing for free will indirectly benefit from partying with members - I tank with a ranger a lot. Im a member giving me better tanking and hes a free playing benefitting from it. Whats the problem? Only named weapons and armor are the difference.

Note: PlayNC will refuse to allow you access to your account if you forget your password and can't provide a scanned image of the product key for the first product you purchased..... LOL
I have to say, hand on heart, having played most of the big MMORPGs out there, from UO to WoW, I've never been more pleasantly surprised by a game. It's easy to get into, unpretentious and good, clean fun. Having quit WoW 18 months ago because I was sick of grinding and the raid mentality, I played a ton of offline games but MMORPGs continued to beckon. Dabbled with DDO for a bit but that was just pants. This really fills a niche and I have to say I bought membership after mucking about for a while - I mean for £3 a month, you can't go wrong. Good game, I'm thoroughly enjoying it.

This game is excellent! and it's worth getting membership!
Very fluent gameplay, doesn't get into your way as you play, everything is where you expect it to be, and the game doesn't punish you for your choices! (classless system attribute respecing)
A huge plus is that you can play it any time for just 5-10 minutes and make progress within the dungeon you were playing.
I'm looking forward to the new level cap (125?) and the new skills. They are also planning to add more dungeons and other missing features like trading. (remember this is a new game!)
Go play DR NOW!
A fun game indeed.
Farming the same mob over and over or clearing the same map over and over is indeed grinding however. The whole game is so toungue in cheek, and that's probably it's best quality. The graphics are quite decent and far superior to 99% of the F2P MMOs. The community is very fun and world chat always entertaining.
I do find the rare tirades of "I can't use this item unless I pay?!" to be somewhat bothersome, as if they aren't getting ENOUGH for free.
DR always makes me smile when i launch it. I mean c'mon, what other game encourages names like "SirRantsAlot".
The game is far from free. If you don't pay, most of the game is unattainable. Severe restrictions on items, inability to use yellow or rainbow items, makes free play a true joke!
I can guess you have not gotten above 50 yet, well once you get up there, without yellow or rainbow items you are pretty useless in this game.
Hence, the free play portion is beyond mediocre. Better to go back and play Diablo.
Next time know what you are talking about before you make such a ridiculous statement!
I had to underline this part, because if you've ever played DR for a couple days, you'd know that MOST of the ITEMS (which is the only part not accessible by non-members) are in fact not Yellow, Purple or Rainbow.
I suppose you are the type that equates items with gameplay. Also, unequippable does not equal unattainable.
It's true that without yellow, purple and rainbow items equipped playing on insane difficulty would be, well insane. But, playing on insane difficulty is primarily for farming purples and rainbows anyway. If you chose not to join as a member, thereby limiting the items you can use, and reduced your difficulty setting, you would experience the same gameplay as those decked in rainbows playing on insane, as well as acquire the items you can use. Pretty ingenius eh?
A smart man once said "Next time know what you are talking about before you make such a ridiculous statement!" Hrrmm, come to think of it, maybe that wasn't a smart man after all.
EDIT: BTW, Yellow items will be made available to non-members as soon as the ads go in.
Nice to know they are eventually going to make yellow items available to the free to play set.
Still my characters are parked until I can at least use yellow. After 50 everyone who groups is doing the extra hard levels which with blue items is a complete waste of time. Many groups won't even take you along.
Sure you can solo at that level on the easy levels, just gets beyond boring do this. It is an online game, meant to play with others.
Next time before you write silly criticisms, maybe you should be smart and think it through first.
I have doubts that anyone ever asked you what quality gear you were wearing before declining you for a group. I have never asked anyone what gear they had, as it's simply not something that I find important.
This game in particular is about having fun above anything else. You can feel that aspect in the core of it's design. It's not designed to have hair-pulling epic battles of technique driven, time sinking argue-fests.
Wearing lower quality gear only means you drink more potions, and what group cares how many potions you drink?
Nice review! Since i quit my EQ2 membership some weeks ago and lookin for a new game I gonna try this one out, sounds really nice
sounds cool i'v considering tryin it out if any1 could tell me about the PvP if there is any i have no knowledge of this game and i love PvP
"....I have doubts that anyone ever asked you what quality gear you were wearing before declining you for a group. I have never asked anyone what gear they had, as it's simply not something that I find important. ...."
What game are you playing? I get asked all the time if I am paying to play when grouping, most groups never take the free players.
There is a huge difference between blue and yellow equipment, it has nothing to do with potions, you do far less damage, let alone the rainbow items that most paying players use. At least show a bit of knowledge about the game, geez.
I've been playing regularly since December '06 and I've never heard of a free player being discriminated against in that manner. Also, if you're grouped you can tell a player's status by looking at the speaker icon next to their name.
In regards to the differences between blue and yellow equipment, the only differences are the bonus stats. What most people don't know is that you can find blue items that have the same base stats (dmg, def, etc..) as yellow items (and purples and rainbows for that matter), but the caveat is that you can use the yellow items at a lower level. Here's a screenshot I took which compares yellow, purple and rainbow items (I didn't have a similar blue to compare). Notice the required level for each item? The comparable blue item would be usable about level 26...
Item Level Differences...
It's a moot point anyway, since advertising is going to be introduced which will convey some member benefits to non-members. Per the lead developer:
~Ripper
wow that banner at the top of that screenshot is pretty upsetting
livejamie
It is pretty big, but I suspect that most players will gloss over it, much like they do with the ads that are at the top of this page while I type.
My only concern is that there's a ton of dead space. Would it be better to have a fixed size corner of the screen used for ads? I'm hoping the devs let us play test the advertising and provide some input. They're really good about listening to other ideas.
I too, have fallen in love with this game, and yes it is Diablo 3: The Fun Returns (or some ridiculous shit), and yes, if you want to use the bank and the best items you need to pay... $5 (American) per month. Nothing for the software itself, and the monthly fee is tiny- quit bitching. If you want to play a truly free game, then go here: lord.nuklear.org/ - otherwise go fuck yourselves.
A witty saying proves nothing.

For one i like the balance between FREE play and PAY play in DR.
Here is why
Freeps can always party with Payps
Freeps get exactly same acess to every content in game
Payps get better equipment and are more powerfull , have easier time with potions
Very importantly there is no invisible line separating freeps and payps (like in HGL)
Excelent job , and highly recomended game !
Are you guys serious?
I mean ya its a free game and you casnt expect alot but this game is definetedly NOT the best free game not even close. This game feels like a demo of another bigger game or something and graphics arent good at all and im not usually picky about graphics, hell the graphics arent even decent. I mean for a free game it does kill some time but man I dont know how you can say its so awesome and amazing.
"Best" is obviously subjective. Without putting all free games through some sort of balanced scorecard system, it's simply a matter of opinion.
As to the graphics, they're fine. They may not be realistic, but they're not bad. Not everything has to be super bump-mapped and shader 3 compatible, after all, graphics don't make a game, game play does. Regardless, these graphics are less advanced than another free game I'm beta testing (NDA, sorry), but look much better. Here's a sample screenshot from DR - the character model looks pretty good to me...
Linky...
it's probably just they style you don't care for.
As to you not liking it, fine. We like it, you don't. No big:)
~Ripper
I'd like to point out that that character model is better than a WoW model.
Anyway, I've never played dungeon runners, but I'd like to... However, it seems the website is down. Does anyone know why? Or when I can download it again?
Official Download Site
£2.50 ~ $5 a month to play, well worth it I think. Removes that horrible ad banner which is very annoying.
I downloaded this last night and it seems pretty good although I dont really know what im doing yet.Loads of people playing anyway.Ill likely sub if it holds my attention. I like the way its total free character customisation with no set skills or armor useage
Do the maps randomize like mythos,or are they all set in stone?I thought it was pure dungeons, but ive seen outside locations too.
How does the pvp work,is it like a duelling system?only seen 1 video of it with 2 rangers but they were in an instanced area somewhere.
