Played EQ2 PvP to 70 before I quit because it's quite crap. A half-thought by the developers limited to just a couple of servers filled with people who just camp zone-in points. /yawn. Been playing in EVE 0.0 for a year now. Gate camps / yawn. Laggy fleet battles / yawn. Been playing WoW pretty much since launch. And WoW beats those hands down. The battlegrounds are like you're actually inside a Warcraft RTS. The other games are pretty bland in comparison, or make you wait too much. I'm obviously not alone in thinking this - except for here of course, where people hate WoW. People pretend to laugh at WoW because it's cool to hate the popular kid but it still has the best PvP out there. Daoc may have been better but it seems that everyone that says that no longer plays the game anymore.
WoW is not popular for its PVP. Guild Wars is a game that is popular for PVP. Planetside was a game popular for PVP. WoW is a PVE game plain and simple. They added in some stuff to appease PVPers but it is and always will be a PVE first game.
Currently playing: LOTRO & WoW (not much WoW though because Mines of Moria rocks!!!!)
Looking Foward too: Bioware games (Dragon Age & Star Wars The Old Republic)
Guild Wars have a real good PvP enviroment, because it 90% of the endgame. There is tons of endless possible builds. Plus you dont have to pay any montly fee.
It has been noted many times, in many different venues that EVE is 95% boredom and 5% terror. True. Or it can be. Just run the other way when a corp says “we do a lot of gate camping” I would rather not play that just sit there and hope some poor sap comes through the gate.
people have no idea that gate camps is a valid method to protect your assets from gankers. You actually 'own' space in EVE. why would you want some ganker/pirate intruding into your space, killing all your miners and possibly screwing with your POS.
why would you even let a miner from another corp come in and strip your asteroid belts bare making it so 'your' own miners cannot collect ore for your POS and ships
gate camping is perfectly valid tactic.
maybe someone else has a take on that but that's mine. gate campers are my heroes
heh no surprise ill be the first to mention these games...(edit: went back and read more of the thread, and what a shock, someone else did indeed mention Neocron)
Mankind (old RTS MMO, actually the first RTS MMO every released), still alive and kicking, although under a asian company now instead of the original french one.
Neocron. Beta ruled, some of the best PVP ever. Its been downhill since release.
If i had to pick a "popular" MMO, i would have to say Planetside. I would mention shadowbane for the small pvp encounters. The big banes were to laggy to consider good pvp.
i must admit I'm suprised by the poll I suspected Guild Wars would take number 1 since its totally based on player skill (and there's no ganking so it contains most stuff mainstream looks for). after then I did expect DaoC, then EVE, then UO / Shadowbane

What the hell are you talking about?... I played WOW back in beta (TEST server 4 and 7 stand up!!) and we used to pvp nearly ever moment of the day. World PVP was awesome back then raids on Lakeshire, Darkshore, Ash, Stormridge were always happening..
DIE (Which was the first big name guild in WOW) were notrious back then in beta.
Anyways im not saying WOW is the best PVP MMORPG, cause I think AO, DAOC, Planetside have it beat. But saying that WOW was a pvE game first is retarded. Screw the grind that it has become, when it came out it was simply a amazing PVP and PVE game.

Shadowbane was the king of pvp mainly because thats all it had really. You either pvp'd or you sat around bored, maybe farmed if you had a town to pay for. Dunno who would vote for DAOC, or some of these other games like WoW. Both are 4/10 at best.

I played Shadowbane, PVP was a good time...but the game was never stable enough to make the experience that fun..and the PVP combat was nothing remarkable.....
DAOC was most certainly better, more tactics, better execution, especially on the FFA PVP servers where I used to play. (could have used more death penalties / rewards, but oh well)

Mythic has absolutley nothing to do with UO aside from the fact that EA assigned them to the KR project when they picked up Warhammer (lol EA will fook this up like every mmo they have touched) And as far as Mythic and KR ..what they are doing will be the final nail in the UO coffin dam shame loved that game im 9 year vet .. But Mythics work on KR is total rubbish very dissapointed .. Mythic has only been involved with UO for bout 10 months.
Ok. How can you even leave Planetside in the dust It is ONLY PvP and does not have an ounce of PvE unless you count the training drones... or the auto-turrets. Planetside requires planning, tactics, and skill to play.
Its the best PvP game, except the players are really stupid. It requires real world tactics from a playerbase that is unimaginative, inneffective, unorganized, and underled. Underpants. Undershirts. Underverse.
PlanetSide, is it even a contest? You can actually implore real tactics in Planet Side, and your skill is a huge factor. On the Mature Rating MMO thing. There are a few in development and a couple released. However, the real issue is in what context they are implemented. Obviously, a porn game isn't going to make much of a game or really add any depth to the game. However with something like Age of Conan, mature content plays a huge role to the universe.
Theres no tactics in Planetside when over 50% of the players have the laser beam from the sky "skill".
Its why i got my first pc two of my M8 was playing it and i liked playing final fantacy and said i should give it a go so i got me a pc.
one of my m8 got me the game to try it and i loved it to bits.
we played all the time trying out dungons and they was hard finding keys hiden walls and all sorts of things you was on the edge of your seat when you went in to them thinking god i going to die any time now.
Them days are gone in MMORPG now and its a big shame
Comments
DAoC seems to take the score
Best PvP game I ever played was NeoCron back in the day not the NC2 crap they have now.
Old school NC was just plain fun. Big fights - skill based and loads of fun.
Ultima Online, pre-trammel/velucca. Sad but true.
Bans a perma, but so are sigs in necro posts.

hands down Dark age of Camelot.
searching for the next DAoC....
Kay-exile
DAOC MAN!!!!!!!!!!!
Didn't play enough of UO to have an informed opinion...So with that being said...
1) DAOC
2) Guild Wars
3) Lineage II
Honerable mention to EVE as it's a good title but minus a person to control I couldn't 100% get into it..
No...a spaceship by itself isn't a true avator.
Dutchess Zarraa Voltayre

Ever since battlegrounds showed up in World of Warcraft, there hasn't been a lot of interest in world PvP among WoW players
1. Asheron's Call
2. Dark Age of Camelot
3. Ultima Online
Anyone see the pattern here? The best have been around almost since the beginning.
I'm not sure but I think another common bond would be death penalty/ item loss.
It isn't much fun when dying doesn't matter.
If you haven't voted Asheron's Call number 1 then you haven't played it.
Yup, No wonder. Both Ultima Online and Dark Age of Camelot are from the same company
