Ok, besides being a huge Transformers and Robotech fan, I'd like to ask why the idea hasn't been entertained yet?
Just curious...
If there are ones in the works I'd love to see the links.
I mean, how cool would it be to work your way up from a small transformer (AKA: Bumblebee) and work your way up to a larger one say Ultra Magnus. Different parts gotten could lead to certain upgrades. A Skill tree system vs. a level based system maybe? Just an idea.
On the other hand, a Robotech MMO could be a little more traditional, with players playing either a skill tree or a level based MMO (either would work really). It could be loosely built around the Palladium RPG.
I guess that the big thing that surprises me is that there are few, if any, good MMO's out there that have you either a) Being a somewhat large robot (transformable or otherwise) or b) being a pilot that controls a giant robot (transformable or otherwise).
Am I crazy in thinking this? I'd love to see what others think.

Well in beast wars they always evolved or changed bodies do to outside radiation or by absorbing the spark of a more powerful transformer like at the end of season 3 when megatron II absorbs the spark of megatron I and becomes a giant red dragon.
Later in beast machines they become technorganic beings composed of organic and machine parts. Megatron II changed bodies or mutated almost a dozen times during the two seasons from being hooked up to life support machine designed to edit its modes, organic werewolf body, a gigantic flying head that could turn into a ship, the body of a small droid and finally a copy of optimus primals third body.
A Transformer MMO would be VERY hard to pull off.. It'd need to be skill-based, which isn't very popular for current MMOs, have a TON of character part models (arms, legs, etc.. Something akin to Armored Core) and also include both factions in a way that's true to IP and involving to the players. That's a big plate.
Mechwarrior MMO would be much easier..
I dunno, a Transformers MMO could be interesting. It would definately be different and maybe that's what we need? I'm personally trying to find something that can hold my interest.
It's too painful to log into Vanguard these days (my sub runs out in Sept and I don't think I'm renewing).
EQ requires too many expansions and WAY too much time.
EQII and WoW are burned out for me.
EvE Online is OK, but it's not giving me my thrills.
I'm having a really hard time finding an MMO with a decent pace, lots of social interaction, yet having the ability to go it solo should I need to. (IE: Not standing around for three hours doing nothing!)
I'm at an impasse!
Robotech was a really neat series. I'm willing to bet there is some type of MMO in Japan that has robots that can transform into vehicles.
Id love to see any sort of Mech type MMO. Even something like Mechwarrior Online would be very cool
or bring back the Shogun Warriors in an MMO. now.. that would be sweet

I've played quite a few asian mmo's that were 2d that involved robots and a few had transformations as a power up type of thing.
Shrug..there is one right there in development.
It could be grindy because it is an Asian FTP mmo, BUT it has transforamtions into beast bots, Vehicles, And you can form a party and create a megazord type of giant robot! sounds neat to me. 2nd closed Beta starts Aug 15th if your interested. EDIT: their site is down at the moment.

NO TRANSFORMERS SHALL NEVER BE DEFILED IN SUCH A WAY, BEGONE CRAZY HERETIC!
You know, that might actually be worth a look at, if nothing else but to feed the inner geek in me.
You know, the more I think about a Transformers MMO, the more it intrigues me. I mean, you look at how Transformers are able to take on different secondary modes. Each one has unique abilities, weapons, modes, colors and styles. And some do infact "grow" (Just look at Orion Pax ---> Optimus Prime and Hot Rod ---> Rodimus Prime) or get refitted (IE: Megatron ---> Galvatron).
Obviously the company would need some creative license to be able to work in a "progression" system. But I think it'd be bloody neat!!
I think each faction should have like four or five basic alt modes types to chose from ... like a sports car, pick-up truck, semi, motorcycle, and a jet for the Autobots, and for Decepticons maybe a tank, a few different Jet models, a helicopter, and car model type. So in this respect both factions would have some similar but different classes, much like other mmo's. Four or five alt modes each faction would be no different or more difficult than any other game that has tons of class types for each race etc.
Now, with these basic alt mode styles, the customization would be what sets players apart. Perhaps you can give your car a nice paint scheme or gain more modifications as you level, and you can equip your robot/vehicle with different weapons. And depending upon wich faction you are, maybe elder/veteran players can access a unique form special to that faction.
Transformers MMO all the way baby !!

There's another Mech type game in development called Force of Arms: http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm/setView/overview/gameID/286
As for a Transformers MMO, I think it would HAVE to be a Skill-based system. That's the only way it would work. You pick your type of Autobot and advance through programming new skills you've learned. It could be designed in a way that mimic's EVE Online's progression. Skills open up better weapons or defenses.
