Project Torque (Online Racing MMO)

Superman0XSuperman0X Member RarePosts: 2,292

Project Torque is an online racing MMO. Is it a game that should be listed on this site?Or is a racing MMO too extreme for MMORPG.Com?

They are currently in closed beta, with open beta to be announced soon. Is a racing MMO somethign people might be interested in? I know that it isnt exactly an indepth MMORPG, but it might be a fun filler, and a good way to meet people.

The site can be found here:

http://project-torque.aeriagames.com/

The client will be changed for open beta, but if you are already a member, you can download the closed beta client  here:

http://project-torque.aeriagames.com/download

What do you think about this game? (or the concept in general)?

I like the concept, the graphics are pretty good. It kind of reminds me of Gran Turismo / Need For Speed. Any word on releasing more cars for open beta? The "32 player per race" thing I read in the game info section really piqued my interest. I'll keep an eye on this one, good find.

Well a MMO Racing game(even if it does have exp gain, and equipment progression) is not exactly a MMORPG. It is a bit off the beaten path for this site....

    Congratulations!!
You have been selected to participate in the United States Closed Beta for Project Torque, the brand new MMORG (Massive Multiplayer Online Racing Game).
This version is still very early in the development cycle, and now is your chance to influence the design and help us track down and fix any problems the game may have before releasing it to the public.
To participate you must first go to www.project-torque.com, or www.aeriagames.com.
You will need to enter your current Last Chaos Login and Password. After you have logged into the site you will receive a message stating that you are now eligible for the Project Torque Closed Beta.
You will then need to proceed to Spawnpoint or Filefront to download the Closed Beta installer.
Run the installation program, start up the game, and use your aeria games account login (same as your Last Chaos login) to get into the game.
You will find a bug reporting forum on the aeriaonline website, under the Project Torque tab. Please enter any and all bugs in this section.
Please make sure that any bugs reported include a screenshot and steps to reproduce.
Thank you so much for your support, and for helping us make this new game the best it can be!

I assume there will be a graphical centralized location where everyone meets up/chats  before and between races. If so, it pretty much seems like the way GW is set up, so it could qualify for a listing on mmorpg.com.  Since you are playing as a racecar driver it could be a role playing game, and it is multiplayer online.  Now if its more like blizz net where its just a waiting room on a web site it wouldn't qualify.

I would like to see a game pull this off and have some success.  The biggest issue I have found with so many online racing games is its extremely easy to grief in them if you want the game to be even remotely realistic.  The older Nascar Thunder games had really fun online modes but all it takes is one monkey to decide it would be fun to drive around backwards and wreck everyone else.

The alternative of course is no collisions/clipping, like Trackmania Nations does, but, thats really not much fun.  Especially for someone that enjoys racing.  If you cant even have contact with the other cars whats the point in it being multiplayer?

The game has two modes, normal, and ghost. In normal mode you can collide, and in ghost you can not. I much prefer normal (most do) but there is always ghost mode for those that just cant deal with collisions.

Very smart....   I signed up on the site, or registered, just followed the steps but havnt received a confirmation email yet.  Will see what comes of the game.  From the front of the web site (I admittedly didnt look too far into it) it looks like mostly street racing.  Would be cool if it had some ovals as well.

It has a few race modes, I dont remember how many off the top of my head. I know it has street, dirt, track, and capture the flag. It might have a few more that I dont remember as well.

It looks like the site is getting hit with the traffic. The emails seem a bit slowed. I guess this is more popular than I thought.

I'll be straight with you guys, here are the main draws to Project Torque that most other MMOs lack.

    1.  Gameplay based on skill, NOT grinding.  Thank god!  You can actually be a unique player and not a digital representation of how much time you spent sitting at your computer.

    2.  Mature community.  This is one of the best communities I have seen and sadly I have played 90% of those games listed over there on the left of this site.  If you are sick of immature kids, l33tspeaking egotists, etc, then this is a good game to try.  All you need to do to prove this point is check out the forums

    3.  The game is free to download and play.  Of course there are premium items, but unlike other free-to-play MMOs, there are ways to get real money points besides paying real cash.  You have the opportunity to WIN your money to buy premium items instead of breaking out the credit card every 2 weeks.

    4.  The game is in Open Beta, and there will be no player account wipe before release.  This is the prime time to take up a new MMO, while it's fresh.  I don't know about you, but I hate hate hate stale MMOs where I am just starting out and everyone else is a god.

    5.  There are some sick prizes to win in tournaments if you're good at this game.  There is a tournament with a $1000 grand prize going on this December.  Article here: http://forums.aeriagames.com/viewtopic.php?t=37997

The player base is about 300 people so far, because the game hasn't even been advertised.  I plan on winning that $1000 bucks because there is not much competition skill-wise so far.  I might end up kicking myself for posting about this if one of you end up winning, but I really care more about the success of this game than anything else.  Plus there's sweet other prizes for me to win if I don't get the grand prize.

I have an invite for it, but I don't intend to use it. I have very little interest in things Aeria puts out after I got that extra special fun time invite to 12 Sky.. geez, they're worse than Gamengame when it comes to these things.

I received it as well. I enjoyed the Need For Speed games, I'm not sure how well this will be received. I don't recall the name of the recent MMO racing game that shut down, but this would be something similar to it.

Need For Speed players or racing game players can just play head to head without all the MMO interactivity as is.

It is a fun game but the community does have some people that can't stand losing and have to put you down or say they are going to report you for hacking.  I can't help it that i kick ass at driving games.

    Sadly, this game strikes out!

If I end up on my desktop before I even start the game it's time to start worrying, if that happens 3 times I uninstall.
