True Fantasy Live Online: Game Cancelled!

MaximaneMaximane Member CommonPosts: 625

A press release from Microsoft Japan has announced the highly anticipated MMORPG for the X-Box,True Fantasy Live Online, has been cancelled.  Microsoft's decision to cancel the title stems from a lack of proper development and stiff competition within the MMORPG industry.  GameSpot was able to contact a representive and assemble a detailed article on the development - here is an excerpt:

When contacted for comment, a representative from Microsoft in the US issued the following statement: "The difficult decision to cancel True Fantasy Live Online was based on a number of careful considerations, including the game's progression to date and the remaining development time needed to complete such an ambitious project. The MMORPG genre, across all platforms, has become an incredibly crowded and competitive marketplace. In response, Microsoft Game Studios has decided to streamline its portfolio, making fewer bets in this genre."

The complete article from GameSpot on True Fantasy Live Online's cancellation can be reached here.

Credit goes towards "Gunblade" for quickly discovering this development.

I just read the True Fantasy Live was cancelled, and I could'nt be more unhappy about this. There was so much excitement and anticipation for this game. We even started a clan. Our website forums have over 2500 postings a month.

XBox lacks any MMORPGs. MicroSoft just left out a whole group of gamers that wants this kind of game for XBox, and really could'nt care how many sports title they have. This game for all apearances was in an advanced stage of completion, and should be finished, and published. I tell you, I don't own a PS2, but I may go out and buy one just so I can play a MMORPG online. Cancelling TFLO may have looked good on paper , but it was the wrong decision. XBox gamers deserve more than just shooters, and sports games.::::10::

One thing to consider is, that the console market has cycles in which you MUST place your product or you will loose all or mostly all of your investments.
This sounds brutal, but it is reality, you cant develop for years and years like on the pc.
So I think it is best to cancel the game, before you have a game on a dying machine (xbox one not xbox in whole!)

One more reason to sell my xbox and go with sony .... This is the last straw - I bought my xbox the first day it hit retail stores -- They promised a 3 year growth patter the likes that had never been seen before ... What we got is sports games and FPS ... period -- One rpg that took 4 days to complete .... And now the best Idea they had going for their LAME console they SCRAP ? ! ! !

I think I can get 50 bucks for the xbox now -- and maybe 5 bucks per game I have - They are almost worthless in resale market ....

KNOCK KNOCK .... Hello Sony ??  I am here to Buy a new  Game Console  from you ...

Look to the stars to know HE is with us. HE hung them as markers, of times and of seasons.

This is just a very, VERY bad move. It's a bad move mostly because this would have been the XBox's first MMORPG game and even though Microsoft is saying that it's not in the scope of their future plans, they have to remember how many XBox Live subscriber they have who would have played this game. Because there would have been a fee involved, if Microsoft had even gotten 100,000 of their million Xbox Live subscribers to play this game at just $13 a month, they would have had 1.3 million every month. I think they would have broke even in one years time and everything else would have been gravy. Let's hope and pray that another publisher grabs this title for the U.S. market.  Just because Microsoft won't publish the game, doesn't mean that some other publisher can't pick it up for the PC or XBox themself. I can see a company like EA or Activision maybe taking a stab at it.  Who know. I just hope it gets released by someone.

Excuse me?  This is utterly stupid.  Competition from WHO!?  Ragnarok Online or RAGNAROK ONLINE!?  By saying this I mean, TFO was just about to be the...second non-suck-ass anime-stylized MMORPG on the market.  They had one game for freaking competition.

Microsoft is by and far clueless to what this demographic is looking for.  They don't realize that the new, 'in style,' (Yeah, all the little kiddies are crazy about Japanimation just 'cuz it's cool, I'm sick of it too, been a fan for almost 10 years now, let's just skip that tired subject of how much you may hate the subject matter 'cuz it's popular, k?) anime crowd would quickly leave boring worlds like EQ, fun but subpar games like RO...repetitive and -somewhat- anime styled but still too realistic for the average fan (that's FFXI,) for a real, immersive, upbeat game like this.  But hey.  Who am I to judge?  Pfft.

In another sense...if this does get picked up by another publisher and moved to the PC (wouldn't be hard seeing as what the XBox is,) then my world would come to an end from starvation from playing TFO too much.  XBox = no good, in my book.

image That is such garbage. I am too furious for words. I would be less angry if they decided to fire the entire development team for TFLO. I understand that sometimes projects fall so far behind their deadline they need to scrap it. But so many people were counting on this... This would have been basically the ONLY MMORPG for XBox... What do we have? Phantasy Star? I don't even see this fabled "Ragnarok Online" mentioned on XBox Live's website... I'm about ready to give up on console gaming... thanks Microsoft.image

I don't even have a reason to renew my Xbox live subscription anymore.

Before i heard about this I was xbox all the way, but unless they revive this project is revived I'm probably buying sony's next system.

Maybe I can make it as a SOCOM II junkie...
