WoW is more of a jump in and play type of game.  You cam make a lot of progress in a very short amount of time.  FFXI on the other hand is a HUGE time sink.  You wont progress nearly as fast but the progression I think is more meaningful.  I have played both games and enjoyed both.  FFXI probably comes out ahead for me.

    -Currently looking forward to FFXIV

-Currently playing EvE and Global Agenda

if you like soloing or raiding- WoW
if you like 100% grouping- FF11.
    Probably.

    WoW by a massive margin.

IMO, every MMO right now sucks.  But there is no "best mmo" because it's all personal taste.  FF is a group forced game, WoW is a solo carebear game.  Best advice: read up on them and try them out for yourself.

Go with WoW.  Very easy to get into and you don't have to rely on groups to get anything done like you have to do in FFXI.  I hear once you get to the end game of FFXI though that it's pretty cool.

I have to agree, although so many people bash WoW. It is still a highly enjoyable game. It's smooth, runs well on 90% of systems (unlike other games that require £1500 worth of system). It has clear gameplay for casual and hardcore gamers etc etc. Definatly worth a look, before someone tells you it's a waste of time.

FFXI on the other hand I played for just short of two months. Its a nice game, but feels very arcade like and because the game was developed for the XBOX 360 as well, the controls respond in the same way on PC (slow and annoying going through menus). Combat is very slow and feels strange. But as said above it can be enjoyable at end game (I didnt make it that far)

But by all means try them both before letting someone influence you. Only you can decide whether or not you are going to like it!

Tip: If you have a 360, try FFXI on that and then WoW on PC. You will get teh best response that each game can give. And possibly get into both! (lets face it, if you have a job of some sort, monthly fees arn't much to worry about for to games)

FFXI is another MMO where you can't swim like LOTRO.  I don't believe you can jump either if I recall.  With regards to 3D MMOs thats two strikes against it for me.  Even in EQ which is one of the first 3D MMOs you could jump and swim in the water.  Other then that FFXI was to group based for me.  Even most group based MMOs I've found a class that can solo.  In FFXI it's really very difficult to solo because groups get bonus exp for executing certain maneuvers and without that exp bonus it takes a very long time to get anywhere.  It's also very risky to fight mobs that will give you experience solo.  Theres always a chance you will lose no matter what class you choose.

WoW is a lot of fun and will keep a casual player happy for a long time.  It's very easy to jump into.

    Final Fantasy XI.

*It has a more dynamic job system, meaning you don't have to start a new character if you don't like the job you started out with in character creation, you can just change it to something else anytime you want. Every race is able to have access to every job also, unlike WoW. FFXI's job system is a little bit similar to GW, too. Your able to combine two different job's (a main and a support).

*More strategic battles. As said earlier, battle's are slower then WoW's because in order to take down a monster in FFXI, you need to do more then just button mash.

*More varied endgame. FFXI's endgame has a lot more then just raiding (Dynamis) and pvping (Ballista).

*More content for lower levels. Unlike WoW, were it's a constant grind to the highest level before you experience any real content, there's plenty to keep you busy in FFXI at all levels.

*Overall better community. It was also said earlier that this game requires much more grouping then WoW, which is true, though because of this you get to interact more with the community on your server.

Saying FFXI has more content at lower levels is just plain wrong. World of Warcraft has more quests at lower levels then FFXI has in its entire game,

  • AmaraoAmarao Member UncommonPosts: 650

Personally I like FFXI more, just because I can't stand WoW.

I didn't play WoW for that long, but the crap PvP which seemed very slapped on didn't appeal to me.  In WoW's defense though I was actually able to solo effectively. In FFXI, that doesn't happen.

Anyway, FFXI has a much better job system, I think the realistic and artistic style is awesome. And if your looking for a good community FFXI has it. Most people are nice and are willing to help. In Wow....its really the complete opposite, you may find someone cool, but only becasue theres so many people that you have a chance to find someone who isnt a 9 year old Tauren Shaman, jumping around and saying how much he loves chuck norris and how everyone is a noob. More commonly, I found the 9 year old Shaman.

If your going in casually, go WoW. Else, FFXI.

FF 11 has some nice storys in it so if you enjoy emersing yourself in an online final fantasy story then FF11 is for you.

But, the quests in FFXI are far more interesting and much better written. There aren't nearly as many "kill ten MOBs" or "bring me ten items" (from ten MOBs you killed) as there is in WoW. The quality of the quests is far better in FFXI.

As for choosing between the two games. WoW is a simpler, more casual friendly game. FFXI is much more engrossing but far more difficult to advance in. If you have the time for it, try FFXI; if not-WoW is still plenty of fun. I've played both and enjoyed them both, but now I am waiting for something new to come along. Maybe WAR will live up to it's billing.

I personally enjoy FFXI the most but it does take a bit to get into...

Its like comparing a novel with a comic book!

While the comic book((WOW)) is fun flashy and fast, the novel((FFXI)) is deep, intriguing, and bueatiful!!

I play both but I love FFXI the most,  most people will say that WOW has the best story but when you compare the IN GAME STORY FFXI wins by a landslide now the Warcraft Universes story is great but not that much of it actaully takes place in game compared to FFXI!

My opinion of FF11.  It feels like work to play this game.   I play games to escape work, not do more of it.  If you want to play casual at all, FF11 isn't for you.

Kudos, on a wonderful analogy. That is probably the best description of the difference in the souls of these two games.

Which do you like more: getting kicked in the balls or getting kicked in the ass?  It's the same choice.

That doesnt make it any different at all, cuz if you dont like a class in WoW you can just create a new character with different hair styles, gender and whatnot and play, while in ffxi you either change your job and stick with your current character without being able to change your appearance or create a new one which will cost you a buck ( not saying thats a lot or anything but why the hell should i pay to create a new character?). Dynamic job system? Oh wait, your talking about this system where your only allowed to combine a few jobs by others. In fact, its come to the point where if you dont use the appropriate sub job for your main, people will just simply never invite you and call you a noob.
*More strategic battles. As said earlier, battle's are slower then WoW's because in order to take down a monster in FFXI, you need to do more then just button mash.
More what? Please elaborate. Because the pace FFXI runs at, even my grandfather can master the game. In WoW you need to do more than just button mash.

WoW has more than just raiding at engame and calling ballista pvp is a joke (scheduled and you have to pay to enter lol).

This clearly shows that you dont know anything about WoW. Theres more quests from 1-20 in WoW than it is in the entire game in FFXI. Let me elaborate a bit here, if your not rich in FFXI, you basically cant do squat but to lvl grind and after doing the first couple of quests and missions, you can kiss soloing the rest good bye.
*Overall better community. It was also said earlier that this game requires much more grouping then WoW, which is true, though because of this you get to interact more with the community on your server.
What community? All I've seen most of the time, japanese players spamming the chat. I dont know maybe its because the EU community is very small. It does require more grouping than WoW, yes but when you start raiding at some point your going to interact with others as well and using teampseak/ventrillo which in FFXI you cant since your not allowed to alt+tab.

I'm not in favor for either game but what makes you think you don't have to button mash in WoW? lawl

DAOC has the best lore and world.

Extremism in the defense of Liberty is no vice.

Played both for a long time. FFXI was more fun overall for me. It was more enjoyable, rewarding and had a better community. It is, however, pretty hard.

    WoW

i actually felt like i was in a world when playing WoW, contrary to popular belief i love the cartoony graphics and the way they made everything graphically it feels alive.

FFXI felt way to serious and time consuming for me

Edit: and you cant jump in FFXI which i hate for some reason

Your comparison is kinda right imo except on one thing: " Every race is able to have access to every job also, unlike WoW". Well, it is true if your speaking about race and the classes that are available to them. But you used the word jobs which causes me to think about what WoW has classified as jobs, professions. These are available to each race and class equally.

Well, 2 things, button mashing in an MMO? Majority of MMo's are kinda the same in regards to skill usage. The actually human skill relies mainly on knowing the skills. Take two lvl 70 combat rogues in WoW. The one who blindly uses skills will probably lose to the one who knows what he is doing. Unlike a fighting game where a button masher may beat a long time player who knows the game.

What I think is better? Well, I like them both. WoW fails at pacing and story. Why? Cuz I just don't feel like I'm apart of a story. My friends play so I play. And have fun. i like FF just because well, it's FF in a mmo. I had fun there also, but more of my real life friends play WoW.

Go with final fantasy 1, its got more action, better quests, and a better storyline than both those games combined.
