Looking for a crafting game with housing...

TesinatoTesinato Member UncommonPosts: 222

I'm looking for a game that has really good crafting, something that has a reason aside from grinding it to the best, that offers the ability to construct housing for people, or yourself.  I've tried Ryzom, I like the crafting, but all the high level people just give you stuff all the time, and there really is no need for crafting, as they all do it.  Eve, well Eve is great i suppose, I'm just bored with it after 2 years.  There is only so many battleships you can build before you go, why am I doing this.  SWG was fun for like 2 weeks, but doesn't live up to what I remember it being before the patches that made it fall.  I tried the eq trial, the graphics didn't really seem to work well on my computer, or something cause it looked crappy to me.  Umm, so yea, is there anything that is out that may be worth trying out?  Any input would be nice.  Thank you.

Hi if your looking for crafting only try a tale in the desert, or just wait for fallen earth to come out as it will have a awsum crafting system.

  • TesinatoTesinato Member UncommonPosts: 222

From my understanding of Tale in the Desert, the game ends, and something about elitism.  I'm not really one of those people who have a good time because I'm the best at something, nor would I ever put someone down because they weren't as good as me.  Maybe it has changed, but that is what I've read, and heard from other gamers I talk to.

Theres nothing "worth playing" thats out atm with this features, i mean Vanguard has it but that sucks and SWG has it but that's been screwed up by LA and SOE. EQ2 has a sorta housing system with quite abit of customization with the inside of the house and you can have pets and things however it doesn't count as the housing is instanced.

Im playing vanguard at the moment (despite myself bashing it during and after beta/release) and enjoying it. Has really cool crafting system and player housing. Alot more in depth than these other silly games out at the moment. They are also improving vanguard and its slowly starting to feel more like a game than what it did. I was sick with all the other games out (with no depth) so i'll be playing VG for some time until something better comes out.

You would need a decent computer to play it though...alot of people bashed the game but since i have upgraded my comp (dual core,2gb ram) the game runs fine, on performance settings i can get 70fps in the wild, and around 30 in cities. Its possible to play it on slower machines if u play with the settings and dont turn up pointless options.

Anyway, the crafting is good, and it is possible to play the whole game only crafting(u get crafting gear, quests, tools and make cash and level up), so it might be worth checking it out.

Read the genearl article on player housing in EQ2 on the main page of the site.  I enjoyed the crafting in EQ2 a lot and the player housing in game definetly allows a lot of customization.

I support Belgiums efforts to get noticed ... at all.

In eq2, do you actually build the house?  Or is it just a deed type ordeal or like ryzom where it is an instanced aparment and all you need is 1 mil in the currency?  If it is craftable, then I think I may look into it.  Vanguard looked fine, and it does run on my compy, but the crashes, lag, and general lack of people turned me off.  I heard they are merging the servers, to help the population issue, and I saw they released a new game update that brought guild halls, and stuff like that, but the more i read on, the more I saw they took out features that made it unique, and are going to base it more like the general types of games.  For instance armor, has level requirements now, they are making dioplamats have a level 1-50 thing, and a couple other things that made me think they are taking the uniqueness away from it a bit.  I did see the crashing should be better now, that they fixed the leaks, but is the population any better?  And is it still pointless to be a crafter til your like 30 or so?  That grind on getting to be able to be useful kind of turned me off too.

  • goofy3kgoofy3k Member UncommonPosts: 250

The populations are still pretty low, but after the merges (think its in a few weeks) that should help it alot, plus u always see new players who have come back to check the changes, and just new players all together. They made crafting more rewarding afaik, but its still pretty hard to level fast anyway in VG.

Yea performance is alot better now, and the level requirements they put in cause people were getting confused with the equipment expertise %. With diplomacy they made it actually made it have more of a point now, from what i hear. Before the updates it was a pointless thing to do. The only prob atm is hte population, so hopefully after merge it will be ok, and when SOE do the re release thing i been hearing about.

In EQ2 you don't build a house you rent one out and yes it's instanced. You can build items for your house or buy items to furnish your house via the broker from other players. You can change the textures for the walls of your home for a price as well. If you become a carpenter you'll have most of the recipes to almost completely make everything you need save for a few items. IMHO EQ2 homes are way better then the homes in VG but that's just my own opinion on the matter.

Games I've played/tried out:WAR, LOTRO, Tabula Rasa, AoC, EQ1, EQ2, WoW, Vangaurd, FFXI, D&DO, Lineage 2, Saga Of Ryzom, EvE Online, DAoC, Guild Wars,Star Wars Galaxies, Hell Gate London, Auto Assault, Grando Espada ( AKA SoTNW ), Archlord, CoV/H, Star Trek Online, APB, Champions Online, FFXIV, Rift Online, GW2.

    Game(s) I Am Currently Playing:

    GW2 (+LoL and BF3)

Alright, this is gonna sound kinda silly, but the best Crafting MMO that has player-built housing is......Horizons.

Yeah, that's right, Horizons has a really deep crafting system and you can build your own house. Now, I beta tested Horizons and played for maybe 2 or 3 months after release and haven't gone back since, but even back then the crafting was the best part of the game and alot better then alot of other games out there. And I can only assume that it has gotten better over the time that has passed.

Now, I don't want to really recommend Horizons, b/c from what I've read the current state of the game is pretty poor w/ billing mistakes and other such nonsense, so you might be better off staying away from the game completely. It might be worth a try though if you really enjoy crafting and would like to actually build your own house.

Yes SOE has been slowly simplifying the game.  They have reduced the total crafting exp curve by 35%, added rest exp and are removing some of the games unique features.

I would disagree about performance improving.  Performance for me on a high end system is signifigantly worse now than it was it April.  I get a lot mroe CTDs, more lag, more hitchiong and this is all with about 1/10 of the population that played during April.  If you group or pass another group you will notice that perfomance has not improved.  The only reason I believe perfoamance3 has improved is the first few patches SOE introduced introducded constant CTDS and lag that was never there before.  Whether SOE did this intentionally or not is certainly questionable.  Add in that the server population is so small now and its to make a case that performance has improved at all even on low end machines.

That being said Vanguard is a very very good game.  Probably the best game we have seen released since DAOC but also a game that is severely flawed in terms of perfomace, bugs, graphical issues, and so much content that is unfinished or lacking in quality.  But the games core systems of combat, crafting classes, the world and more is arguably the best by far of any game we may have ever seen in a MMO.  Such a shame as there is so much good about this game but so much very bad.  if they could hva ehad another 2 years to develop this and not had to associate themselves with SOE or MS it really could have been a fantastic game.  Instead it will most likely always be a severely flawed game that has flashes of brilliance and what if.

To the OP's point about crafting.  Vanguard's crafting is very good.  Unlike EQ2 it is not just mindless button mashing (which btw seems to be the entire focus of EQ2 aznd a phrase they should put on the box)  but actually takes some thought.  The core system in Vanguard is very good.  Is there the depth or customability of Horizons or SWG?  No, not even close. Crafting really needs a lot of work to finish it.  More quests, more recipes and city building would help a lot. But it is still a very good crafting game.  The world is huge and the potential for crafting is endless.  Presently players can only build hoosues, boats, guild halls, furniture as well as armor.  The plan was to do put in city building at some point.  Given SOEs amazingly slow rate of development it might be a very long time until that happens.  But there is certainly the potential there if SOE can  start developing the game rather than using it as marketing tool for EQ2.

There is a free trial of Vanguard in the works.  You might want to wait for that.  Outside of Vanguard the only decent crafting systemsa re Ryzom, Horizons and SWG.  Horizons was just resold back to Tulga games and might be worth giving ti a shot if you can stand the dated graphics and the lack of a viable adventuring sphere. For future crafting games there does not appear to be any in development. AoC promises city building, Warhammer promises some revolutionary unddisclosedx crafting system but neitehr appear to be a major focus.  David Allen's new game Crusade which has been renamed Alganon might potentially be a decent crafting game.  But for the future Vanguard appears to be it unless one of the newer games can show us something good.

Yea, horizons was a great game.  I enjoyed building houses, and lairs with my dragon til the company switch happened like 2 times, they charged me for something I cancelled, and now hardly anyone plays, and I can play for free. Bizarre at the least, but that game is dead, I know it, just sad cause of how wonderful the crafting was.  I don't think anything like horizons exists though.  As far as eq2, if you just rent a spot, that is no real fun for me.  I never really cared for decorating a place, it just seemed like a big status symbol to me.  Whoever had the huge chunk of money could make the house the nicest, or in SWG, could have rare items that where million and millions of credits.  I guess player housing isn't something most people like.  Oh well, I may just be at a loss.

  • TesinatoTesinato Member UncommonPosts: 222

Is there a date set for the vanguard server merge?  It would seem rather pointless to start back up if there only going to shift around people.  From my understanding, your right, there probably won't be any new crafting type games in the future.  EQ2 just doesn't seem like my cup of tea.  I like the idea of creating a house myself or with others.  Maybe I'll go and look at Horizons again and see what is up with them, not sure what else to play.  If you have any other ideas, be sure to message me on this forum or a pm.  I'm willing to try anything I think.

They said they hoped to do the server merge immediately after the new patch which happened a few days ago.  But who knows the way SOE slowly moves the merge could be a few days or or a few months.  The problem with a merge besides the technical problems of moving people will be performance.  Merging 4 servers into one and having 4 times the server population plus any additional people that return does not bode well for performance.  But from a crafting perspective it should matter little as its a solo activity and since crafting is turn based lag will not hinder your crafting much.

In regards to the server merge since crafting solo it should not matter much whther you join now or after the server merge.  If your doing any adventuring it might be preferable to play and learn the game when there are less people around.  if you do pick up the game and have any questions you can always pm me.  You should also check out Vanguard crafters for information.  Using a macro to set up your table for crafting so you can all the needed ingriedients to your table when beginning crafting is essential.  There are some other macros you can use to limit the number of clicks but they are not as essential as the table set up macro.  My concerns with a new player trying Vanguard is that you look at you understand the game is very unfinished and has many flaws.  if you can accept it for what it is and not what it isn't it can be a very good game.

I have thought about going back to Horizions as well,  The crafting and building there was nothing short of amazing.  Unfortuntaely its been so long since I played I am sure my plot is gone which was a big source of my enjoyment of HZ. Although I often consider resubbing.  I am happy to see Tulga repurchased the game and they have started the forums back up and are addressing the billing problems.  I hope they can get it moving back in the right direction.

I agree, the crafting in Vanguard is great; sort of the only reason I played it for the time I did.

Do you guys think it will ever improve?  I mean with Vanguard, crafting is great, but is it going to be another Auto assault, where they just can't make it work and pull the plug.  Granted, I didn't really get into AA, but for those that did, it must be a sad day for them, as what they played, worked on for a year or so is all gone.  I don't know how I would handle such a problem.  I guess I'll just have to give it a try, and hope that doesn't happen.

  • ianubisiianubisi Member Posts: 4,201

Ultima Online has always been and still remains the best crafting + housing system you can find on the market today.

As for Vanguard, SOE will no doubt keep it running even if only a few hundred players are playing. Look at MXO and PlanetSide as your examples of this. It's well worth it the marketing value for their Station Pass.

It's a small community, it's a good community, but until they improve the game in many aspects I won't bother getting into I won't be playing it and I think that's the same for many people.

Hopefully the server merge is just the first step of many they have planned for improvements.

i was actually very impressed with the crafting system in vanguard:soh, which was acquired by SOE and is undergoing some hefty changes. you can make player housing and things like boats...plus the crafting isnt boring.

Yea, I guess I'll wait a month and see how it is doing.  Maybe after the server merge and I find out if the merge causes more ctds, that will be make my decision for me.  I got a bare min vanguard system.  Can't really make it look really pretty without killing my fps.  Balanced settings do work ok though.

  • TesinatoTesinato Member UncommonPosts: 222

If i wanted to play with kids Josereyna, I would, but I tend to like something that isn't for a 10 year old.

    Awesome crafting??????

No freaking way...it's worse than WoW's crafting system.  I can't wait to see how their housing turns out though.

But playing a game for the crafting.... go figure..... what will they think of next......
