How has FFXI been doing lately? Is it still very low population, and you need to buy gold in order to function? The last time I played, probably 6-8 months ago, it was very hard to advance as no one wanted a low level player with crappy gear, cause I couldn't afford better. I'm kind of considering coming back to it, but I am not about to spend money just so I can pay money to play a game.

Population is slightly lower than when the game first came out but I wouldn't consider it "low."
You don't need to buy gil to function. If you couldn't afford stuff you "need" 6-8 months ago then you probably still can't. However, there are plenty of easy ways to make enough money for at least average gear. i.e. mining and making ingots just two examples.
There are only a few jobs which require good equipment, mainly melee DD. But as long as you make/join parties made with some sense and play skillfully you'll do fine with mediocre equipment.

Hmm, sounds like it is pretty much the way it was back then. I take it you will spend hours waiting for party invites as well then? I can honestly say, those were the only 2 problems I have ever had with this game, waiting hours on end, and people bitching about your equipment all the time.
You can potentially wait hours, depending on your job. But it's largely because you're being stubborn about it. First, time-of-day plus two or three /sea's will easily tell you roughly how long you have to wait. Depending on that time, there's plenty of stuff you can do while you wait.
- solo ep dc if you have a job that can
- go fishing, mining, crafting or something like that
- help someone out
- run tele service
- change to another job
- the list goes on and on...
Personally, today, I just watch TV, read a book, surf web, and/or chat online while I wait.

Ya...umm, not sure if you have ever played any other games, but most games, you shouldn't have to wait 2-3 hours to get into a party. Watching tv, sitting in jeuno waiting, or trying to form a party that no one wants to join you in, well what fun is that. Granted, you can go fishing, or craft something, but unless your a melee class your probably not going to be taking much ep or dc when your like 20, less you have wonderful equipment, and even then it will be an epic battle. Oh well, I was hoping it changed a little.
If you don't enjoy FFXI more then other mmos when you party or just wandering in the world, then you will never take to the game. People who play will bother to wait around for a party because parties are incredible fun to us. Gear isn't all that a problem when you love economy, by that I mean that you enjoy making gil, skilling up a craft or fishing, or farming items people need.
I always loved it whenever I sold something on the AH from the time I started, and I've never had a problem with buying gear. And don't keep your gear when you're done with it on the off chance you might need it again, you can get it again later, it's always circulating. On that note I noticed some pieces of equipment are cheaper then before...
Anyway FFXI is more to be experienced then it is to be 'played' like other games, which is why some people hate it and others love it.
(,,,)=^__^=(,,,)
I dont' really hate it per say, I just dislike the downtime. I mean granted, it is a beautiful world, and the game is well put together, and the crafting is risky, and fun which I do like. I have found though in the lower levels, up to 22 is when i stopped, that everyone had a problem with me cause I was using lower end gear that what I could be using. I didn't have the gil for it, as it was rather expensive. Maybe I should of slowed down and tried crafting or something, but I didn't know what to do to be honest, and after 3 days of being invited to parties, going to where the party was, and then being kicked out of parties or being kindly to leave cause of my gear, I got dishearted and chose not to play. I truly wonder if it would be the same way if I came back. Maybe a better question is, what server should I be on where people aren't so uptight about it nor elite about their gear. I never have played a game for the "uber gear".
When I was a lowbie(almost 4 years ago), I fished. And fished. And fished some more. I loved fishing and had np fishing for hours making gil so I could afford decent gear. Whether it be fishing, farming, mining or whatever, you will have to do it.
Can you recommend a server to join then? I think I want to join, but hopefully with the right server, I won't have to deal with such elitist behavior.
wow Dude How Would You Have Hard Time Getting Gil At Those lvls Its Very Easy I've Just Starting Having probs With Gil And im lvl 68 Whm With a Bunch Of Other Jobs Lvled 4-36
I didn't take any of the other jobs, and was going straight through it. The upgraded sword past 13 was like 30-40k, and i just didn't farm enough to get it, alone with the armor needed to be a good tank. I mean, granted, I guess I could have went through, did another job, but I felt that I should be able to get to 30 first, so I could get a dark knight. That is what I had wanted, with a War subjob. Didn't see the need to worry about the other classes, maybe I should have.
You say you played 6-8 months ago? Prices were still sorta out of whack then. What server did you play on? Cmon down to Unicorn if you wanna restart, I can help you out with some low level equips. 30-40k for a lvl13 weapon is just retardedly expensive.
I am very sorry to hear "SHADOWLORD" that you met the immature players that worry about your gear.I accept anyone to party with, and i don't think i ever checked any player out to see if there gear met the standards.I know your pain however ,as i have seen on many occasions, the immaturity of players acting like there pimp/cool whatever.Shadowlord ,you just need to meet the right LS or right group of players ,that are there to get along and just have some fun.Too bad some of the ignorant ruined your fun, stuff like that really pisses me off.
If anyone in this game thinks you need to have elite gear or look pimp, then there clueless. The RMT to wich i have seen alot of in this game level along just fine and they use often level 1 gear on level 30 players.Heck i have seen them use there level 1 gear on level 40 players.
To answer your other question, yes the player population that is active on the low end of the scale,is very low.I am on most every day and sometimes on weekends for a longtime.I have seen players with LFG/seek for several hours only to finally give up and logout or maybe to another account. Most of the frustration to making parties is the same now as it has always been"no tank or no healer".Someone pointed out that alot are going on vacations because the summer holidays are nearing an end.
If your thinking of restarting this game up or just joining as a noob then do it one or 2 weeks before the exspansion comes out. This will give you the time to get a sub job and even if it's not ,your chances to party will be very good ,with so many players levelling the new jobs.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
The population isn't low. At all.
FFXI is still kicking ehh?? thats very good to see.. i started way back int he day upon first release of the U.S.A release.. i played allt he way until about 3 months after C.O.P... iv been consiterign going back.. but i dunno.. ill keep thinking.. i do kinda miss my lvl 60ninja & my lvl 60drk
I'm doing the 4 hour patch now to be honest. I hope i find the right people.
I just started back on the cerberus server, and I see people all over the place at all times. I was actually very surpised and very pleased with the population that I have noticed. If you start on cerberus, send me a tell. My name is "Hyndrix"
Since you're going to start again:
- warriors aren't suppose to use swords, use gswd or gaxe before lv40-50. Then sometime during then switch to dual axes.

I played waaaay back when ffxi first hit the US, got 2-3 jobs to 75 then quit when my rl friends started WoW....
Now Im back and couldnt be happier with the game. People generally seem friendlier than i remember the overall population being and many people are willing to at least give a few pointers out when you need them.
