Hmm yeah, you should never go by what others say. If I along with a million people say WoW has no evil race, wont some people fall for it?

People are LOTRO haters because they're WoW fans and think LOTRO is a copy of WoW.

I admit, lotro is nothing new or unique - but its awesome. It has some flaws, but a great game never-the-less.

    Played almost everything...
    Currently playing nothing...
Waiting for: Darkfall, WAR, Guild Wars 2.

I also was not impressed with the customization. Certainly its better than WoW, but WoW has horrible customization.
Too bad.  My search for a MMO continues.

Please tell me how it contradicts the story?

The extensive use of magic.  In the movies magic was limited and only the most powerful could use it.

In setting up a character, I was reading about the Captain class, the description said that they could resurect fallen comrades.  Being able to raise the dead is a very significant power. Not even Gandalf had a magical power of such magnitude. To give such a power to a mere human captain goes against the letter and spirit of the canon.

On a side note, the description of the classes also states what the MMO role of the class is, rather than emphasising how the class fits into the canon. While there is nothing work with this necessarily, but it shows their view point, make the game fit the MMO genre, rather than making the game fit within the LOTR canon.  Degregation of the canon will get worse over time if a company isn't serious about make hard choices.  I don't think Turbine is up to it.

Shilo, you may have some good points, but the main one you list is wrong. Sure, they could have done it differently than what they did, but the things you list DO fit within the LOTR canon. Captains cant raise the dead, Minstrels don't heal wounds, nor is that power given to any playable character. Doesnt mean you'll like or dislike the game anymore than you do now, but, if you judge the game on what it is instead of what you think it is, like I did at first, you might see things differently. Turbine has gone to some great lengths to stay within the lore, they could have had more box sales at least if they didnt IMO.( NM..didnt see your next post.)

    See you in the dream..
The Fires from heaven, now as cold as ice. A rapid ascension tolls a heavy price.

I tried the 7 day trial, at first, I wasn't impressed except with the graphics.  Once I reached around 15, when I got the class-specific quest, I started to enjoy it.  I'm 25 now, and I still like this game.  It isn't TOO addictive, and it's a very relaxed play type game.  I can only play on weekends so it works well for me.

So, I'd say if you try this game out, wait til at least 15th level before making a decision on how much you hate or like this game.

This game is full of MMO veterans, who at first didn't like (or even hated) the game, but a couple of weeks/months later they gave it another shot, got past through the 25-30 lvl barriers and started really appreciating and even loving it.

Of course, haters will still lurk around and will try to make themselves VERY heard - but that is rather a psychological thing (they need attention mostly, as WSIMike said...:)

Actually..I am not a WoW fan, liked GW better...EQ2 is better also...but, I just wanted a GOOD game in general...LOTRO was not it.

But, really...no one should decide by what we say or by reviews..because each person has a different opinion (and we each have a right to state that opinion...no matter how much the LOTRO lovers hate for anyone to say anything bad for example)

Try the trial is the best option...thankfully they have one...note how Vanguard does not...because they are still embarrassed over what happened, and until they get it all fixed...they will not have one...yet, note how LOTRO, GW, EQ2, WoW have them...so, try them all, and make your own decisions...reason this is a free world...(mostly)

    Cheers!

I don't like WoW either.  I may give LOTR another try, but I am afraid pre-CU/NGE SWG has ruined me for other MMOs.  I've done a bunch of free trial and haven't found any that keep my interests.

    Thanks for the insights.

I'd say 30 minutes is plenty to figure out of a MMO is "bad" and not for you.

I played the LOTRO 7 day trial for 3-4 days then stopped. It was ok, I liked it at first, but I got really bored with it very, very quickly.

I wouldn't agree with the 30minutes thing, but if you didn't like if after 3-4 days, that's fair enough.... cannot be everyone's cup of tea

After 30 minutes I knew that Archlord wasn't for me lol

but in LOTOR 7 day trial I think I got to level... 15 or so? A guardian or whatever it's called? I played LOTRO in beta and really, really didn't like it, but I did enjoy it for a few days when I did the trial...

I dunno, maybe I just really, really hated their character models. Like EQ2, I hate all the character models except for the cat people (K-something) so that's what I play. I don't know what EQ2 has that makes me enjoy playing it much, much more then LOTRO, since the games are SO similar...

Did you ever try the SOGA models in EQ2?

I switched to them, and never returned...

    http://eq2players.station.sony.com/en/news_ff.vm?FeatureName=SOGAmodels

If you enjoy an anime flair...they look great..better than the plastic faces...

My wife personally disliked the LOTRO models...I liked the male models...but just the one with the beard...and he looked older, as I used that style...and I think the dwarves looked awesome in LOTRO also...but limited selections did not help...

I like being able to change the features instead of picking pre-selected models as well. So, big nose, little nose, high checks, low cheeks.,stretch it around...

From my understanding EQ2 is also going to change the main skeletal models systems, and make it prettier and more robust...should be cool...

Anyways...no need to discuss that here...may make a thread on the EQ2 forum to discuss that....

    Cheers!
