Although having 2B's of RAM will help your PC, I would recommend that you go upgrade your video card first. You would see a more significant improvement by upgrading your video card to something like X1950 PRO or GeForce 7950 GT then upgrading your RAM to 2GB's.

Ya upgrade your video card.  It will have a huge impact then upgrading ram in any visual application.  Non-visual applications usually don't require much ram unless they are bloatware like Norton Anti-Virus.  Like I changed my renderer to render from Video Card in a 3D App, and what was a 1 hour render per frame turned into a 3 minute render per frame.

i started looking into it and i may have to upgrade my motherboard too as i am using pci ports and not pci express or agp...hmm.  am i totally screwed for the future of gaming?  i feel maybe i should just get a new computer with stuff preinstalled.

At this point, judging by what little information you've given, id say you should look into upgrading the whole PC if its an option, as all of the new hardware is NOT backwards compatible with older mobo's and old hardware is not compatible with new Mobo's.

*edit* by upgrading whole pc i mean, BUY A NEW ONE!
