My first foray into roleplaying games was a PBM (play-by-mail for the uninitiated) called Green Sun. I remember eagerly waiting days for the results of my next turn to come through the post. PBMs were probably the true grandfather of the MMORPGs we know today as they allowed people from all over the world to interact with one another in a game environment.
My first true CRPG was probably Space 1889 - a great game, even though I didn't have a clue how to play it! From that I went on to Warhammer tabletop (If you can class that as RPG) via Adventure Game books and a handful of text-based RPG's. My first true MMORPG was WoW which I love for what it is. Not an RPG by any stretch of the imagination but simply a hell of a lot of fun.
The game that started me to play online game will be ragnarok online and gunbound. I was so fond of their characters. It looks like chibis from any anime's I've watched before. It is so cute. But now I'm currently enjoying a more realistic effects just like Atlantica online.
it wasnt either, for me it was just LARPing as a kid and when i found out it was called roleplay and there are roleplay games (round 8 or 9) i got into them, not sure really which game i started roleplaying on first...
I guess it was Zelda way back in fourth grade... No wait I had Prince for Persia in DOS, tho that was more of an adventure game but still I am the prince there.
When I hold my guitar, I become a different person.
Which games got you started role-playing? Was it a video game first or pen and paper/ table top? Do you still play them today? I'll start (this is just for curiosity's sake). Video Games came first for me: Final Fantasy (for NES) or Dragon Warrior (for NES) The first pen and paper game I played was Shadowrun 2nd Edition but I became a big Vampire: The Masquerade Fan. I have ROMs for all of the NES games, but I haven't played them in a while and I gave up on pen & paper games a while ago.
I played Atari games, nintendo, gameboy things like that...what got me really hooked in gamming was Everquest: Ruins of Kunark. That was the most fun I had ever had in a gamer ever..used to stay up 24 hours straight to play.
The game that actually got me Role-Playing was Ever Quest. I remember like it was yesterday, the gentleman at blockbuster telling me the video game i was renting wasnt a video game, he recommending EQ. Of course I looked at him like, what are you talking about, what console is it for? He just looked at me with these big burning eyes and said, no console, PC. Ever since I looked up the game on the computer I was hooked. Stole my moms credit card and it was done.
After that I sooner went to Chat room on AOL 5.0 to Role-Play, I went from being a vampire to a proffesional wrestler and we played with keyword: Dice.

Matrix Online got me started. I remember how many roleplayers there were in beta and when the game first opened. It was impossible not to get pulled into it, and I loved it!
Since I don't really associate role playing video games with role playing, I would have to say that my first role playing experience was on a Zoids Forum RPG. My first RPG period was Pokemon, though. I've played a few role playing video games since then but the only time I ever actually role play is in forums and in IM conversations.
First actual roleplaying was done in Yahoo chat (back before it popular and the disaster it was last I saw). First roleplaying in a game format was with WoW, which was not intentional as I was simply looking for a server that I figured would have a more mature population. After that I really started to enjoy the lore and playing as my character.

I have only being part of Role-playing in games. I started experimenting with RP in World of Warcraft, but never actually got into it.
The first real RP I did was in Age of Conan, and really enjoyed it. So now I am addicted, and slowly getting used to it. I am also slowly getting into writing poems and stories about characters from the games I play.

Good to hear! I found that roleplaying in game really started a "creative streak" with me as well! Since I have started I have written a lot of short stories about my character for background history, and also just for the fun of writing! I would also like to try to get into doing artwork, but I am not very good. All in all, I have found the creativity wanting to spread to other aspects of my life.

White box D&D back in the 70's. I'm old.
Over the years, on and off, I've always been a gamer of some kind. My favorite roleplaying game is one called Amber: Diceless Roleplaying set in Zelazny's Chronicles of Amber. That one might be a little tough for both obvious and not obvious reasons to translate into a computer game or MMO. Mostly, I just collect tabletop RPGs for reading these days. I don't have the time or inclination to try and get involved in a group anymore.
My roleplaying has migrated online. First to text-based MUSHes and now to MMOs.
The best MMO for roleplaying, so far, is probably Star Wars Galaxies on the Starsider server. It's the biggest server in the game and, in no small part, that's because it's always been the unofficial roleplaying server. While the game is still sorely lacking in "Star Wars" it does have many unique and handy tools that help roleplayers out. The Storyteller System (create your own adventures and outside decorations - not tucked away in an instance but out in "the world") and the Appearance Tab (wear what's effective however silly or ugly but dress the way you want to be seen in the Tab) are two that stand out but decoratable player housing and starships and hordes of pets, toys and vehicles also add possibilities. The avatars are highly customizable in appearance and wardrobe. There are scads of animated emotes as well.
Eve Online might have the most sophisticated roleplayers. They tend to be realists who get into political and historical details as much as individual characters. You can run into rather high level discussions about theology, cosmology and politics both IC and OOC in that crowd. However, they are relatively few and with no human avatars in Eve Online, yet, they can't actually "get together" for roleplay. It's all conducted in chat channels or forums.
I started playing 1985-era D&D and space-based games with persistent worlds, such as Demon's Winter and Starflight. When I hit college, I first saw multiplayer games in the form of BBS games, then a MOO and finally XTrek.
XTrek was amazing for the time, and unbelievably cool. It was the first true multiplayer game I'd ever seen, and I was hooked.
Not too long after that I switched schools and lost XTrek access. It was there that I found a MUD called Hidden Worlds. Even though it was only text, it held my interest much more strongly than XTrek ever did. New MMOGs take the experience to the next level. They can really be time sinks though :P

the first game that had me hooked to video games is that burnout series.

Great Discussion!
From what I've seen, there are a lot of 'old hats' here, which is fine by me 'cause I'm no exception.
1. Chess was my first RP Game (ROFLOL)
2. Dungeons, by Atari.
3. Spaceflight
4. Tradewars
5. A Bard's Tale
5b. Doom, Quake, CounterStrike
6. Asheron's Call
7. WoW
(Then the MMORPG World went to hell)
8. Long-Term Subscriptions with: Anarchy Online, CoH/CoV
9. Deleted after pre-order/launch: ACII, Lineage II, VanGuard, AoC
10. Awaiting: DarkFall
* I'm skipping WarHammer Online 'cause they didn't invite me to the Beta (my sad excuse.)

For me it was Chainmail then D&D followed by all the AD&D versions.
The old Ataria 2600 games like pacman then on to the the Ataria 800 8-bit computer.
Loved playing Eye of the Beholder series on a 286 bit comp.
First online MMO for me was The Realm by SSI.
Since then have played most of the on-line MMOs, like Everquest (1 and 2), SWG, DAoC, on up to WoW and AOC.
I guess it was Zelda way back in fourth grade... No wait I had Prince for Persia in DOS, tho that was more of an adventure game but still I am the prince there.

started playing Ragnarokonline
until the hat patch thingy >.>

What got me started...
Well, I am an old Red Book/Blue Book original D&D player, and even tried out Tunnels and Trolls ages ago. Seriously.
Those were good times...now it's the good old Xbox 360 and Gears 2 baby!
LOL!

I would say Diablo II LoD v1.09 and after it there was Warcraft III Reign of Chaos.
Warcraft 3 is a strategy game, not an RPG.
