I first discovered a few MUDs in middle school. I sucked and failed at them all because I didn't have the time or dedication to get deeply involved in them.
Then, I heard neverwinter nights was a good game. Bought it and was blown away, Amazing game. Then I entered high school and played asheron's call 2. It was my first taste of an mmo community and I loved it. Then I moved to EQ2 in hopes of getting really deeply into the game, much more then my random socializing and antics in asc2. Then it was WoW where I trully learned the mechanics of mmorpgs to a much further extent. Now, im a drifter like coke cat.
I got started back with Ad&D 2nd edition in the 80s. Be wonderful to find a mmo that could get even close to the fun that could be had with a group of friends around a tabletop. My first MMo was UO and it was finr for the time and didn't really mind the pvp as it seemed as soon as someone ganked you another person would kill them or help you get new gear. Played many game since then and currently playing Wow. As far as what keeps me going in mmos it is usually the good people I find and guild with during my time in a game. Though in my own personal experience DAoC probably had the best community in an MMO.
It was the release day of UO waaay many moons ago, what a great time that was for sure. Played that one for many many years then started hopping around to the new MMO's out. The thing thats keeps me going is definantly community and the people i befriend while playing, currently playing nothing at the moment, but will probably start AoC pretty soon.
after that came breath of fire 2 "SNES" then chrono trigger, then after that a whole lot of rpg's
then around 2000 we started going old school, got D&D forgot what module and version cause i no longer have it here and my girl keeps it, the manuals are good materials as she is making an rpg with rpg maker xp/vx,
but still im kinda hooked with pen and paper rpg's.
I've been playing games since i remember from atari to pc games... my first console game is super mario brothers in family computer. I dont remember the atari games this is only first game i recall playing it. first mmo rpg was ragnarok online. gud old times.
well, I remember starting with playing oregon trail on dos, that was so much fun, especially when you tried to kill your people by giving them no food. Then I liked simcity and age of empires, anyone remember a sim driving game? I played pokemon and mariokart too, and had a lot of fun with the sims 1 and 2, and a little ragnarok. I even played math computer games like Math blasters... surprised my parents let me go on the computer so much as a kid!
On to MUD's with the introduction of internet access and finally on to UO, M59, and EQ to start off a very long list of MMO's that I've played and tested.
for me, it was final fantasy 5 in nintendo. started playing games ever since. There's Zelda after that, as well as donkey kong. (YES!) After that I moved on to Playstation which would be breathe of fire III. Ahh, miss those good games.
Video games came first for me as well. For me it was Wizardry III Legacry of Llylgamyn. But what first got me hooked was pen and paper D&D. Later I went on to conquer the Might and Magic series, then the Heroes of Might and Magic games.
After that it was all mmorpg games, starting with Lineage.
Well the Classic Battleon the wonderful 2-d amazing hit. First actual mmorpg game i played but. The legend of Zelda Link to the Past was the first rpg game i played that got me hooked. I still play both of these sweet games, even though their graphics stinky but what can i say they are classics.
My first was Final Fantasy 1 on the 2600 NES , but another good one from back then was a game called Dizzy you are this little egg and have to save Daisy from the evil Zak it was made by codemasters
i guess star frontiers or D&D was the first actual taste of rpg i had. don't remember which one was first since this was back in the early to mid 80s. it was also my first taste of anime cause i remember watching robotech on tv.
The first game to get me started was Final Fantasy 7 then I been off and on. I still enjoy playing Chrono Trigger randomly from time to time. Love that game :P
You know I said final fantasy but it may have well been the Legend of Zelda .ugggggggggh not really sure to be honest now LOL Which one came out first?
I don't remember if I ever responded in this thread, so if I did, sorry for the repeat.
I started RPing with Chainmail in 1974, moved to D&D when it came out and played pretty much every week with one group or another for the next 20 years. While I've since found it virtually impossible to find good people to play with face-to-face, I spent more than 15 years RPing on online text-based MU*s and then wishing that MMOs weren't inherently anti-RP. I'd kill for a decent gaming group or a decent online game that was set up specifically for roleplaying.
Likely will be outcast for admitting it but games like Sonic 2 and Mario Land started it for most of us,
RPGS became appealing in my late teens(I was a hyperactive nutty kid up to that point and I preferred social game events like the classic 'see how many times you can spook or annoy your buddy into losing at a sonic 2 ring collection contest'.
I list these kinds of games because back in the 8 and early 16 bit days rpgs were so sand box and void of content even most semi-hardcore gamers avoided them. (The educated, neurotic and ocd gamers were the ones who loved Ultima and such at young ages, no offense because I am exactly that with a few added quirks now myself!) We'd act out hypothetical fight seens between cross platform mascot fights that hand not yet come to be a reality until someone lost a tooth, got a concussion or decided to get crazy and scare the rest of us(or them) with a pocket knife. (Honestly what do you think inspired south park? Poor delusional parents XD)
What got me into role playing VIDEO games was when I reached the oh-so mature age of 14 and attended random gatherings with my hero at the time(I was always a follower and I met the coolest gamer ever back then, Seek out the 8-bit arena forum and get acquanted with the writers at penny arcade if you want to get to know what an honest gamers life is like, it's becoming way over romanticized and the media attention is turning it into something even less desirable to parents and honest workers than it was as an antisocial and almost cult like activity done by those of us who didn't care to join the rat races in school.
Let's use some honesty here, people claiming they were avid fans of final fantasy at the age of 6-9 are either not going to be soicial enough to post here or are lying about their age. For one the actual 8-bit and 16-bit generations of gamers would be tortured enlessly and likely have more emotional barriers than a roman catholic growing up in vegas. It's just not something we brag about no matter how popular our hobby becomes.
The other factor being that even the genius kids of the late eighties and early nineties were outcasts and either learned to hide it or spent time in lockers with broken noses, and don't let someone claim otherwise, cause even being 6'2 in the eight grade i wasn't able to over power an entire crowd of angry people intent on redirecting attention from their own bloopers to someone who stood out a little more,so i hid my nerdiness real well!
I love rpgs but I don't go and brag about them, for one it is RARE to find a plot driven rpg that requires any real skill to beat with maxed stats, they take time and TALENT, not skill. Why talent you ask? Because you HAVE to have a really good imagination to truly appreciate even modern rpgs.
All that said forgive that rant and I hope nobody takes this as a personal attack. I was speaking from my own personal experiences. Maybe you came from a more laid back community than I did and see it in another light, but most people don't like talking about gaming even now that it's becoming common.
What is more inspiring, even as a gamer:
A. Somebody ranting about how much skill it takes to press a few buttons and tilt a wii mote?
B. A movie made after a book that wasn't popular in it's day becoming the center of all context on the internet and amongst kids who over romanticize the elite and gamers?
C. A fist fight on a subway between a priest and a rabi, a weight boarder ending up on top of a shark and escaping without being bit, a heavy weight boxer being knocked ten feet over the side of a ring into the audience by someone in the middle weight division in a moment of adrenaline?
Honestly I find stuff like max X vids and extreme sports gathering more fun to watch than a recording or narration of another gamer talking about an mmo they are playing. I play rpgs to relax, they can be fun, very fun but if you are looking for interesting conversation go to an ultimate fighting tournament or a bar.
Nobody can deny what inspires us to play rpgs- drama, movies, music, books, extreme emotional distress and boredom. But that one on the front of everyones list, that little excuse that has become classic- Peer pressure. My friends pressure me to share my booze with them and buy them shit, not to play a game with them.
They might suggest it to some of their favorite friends but the only ones that get genuinely pushed into the arena are the occasional wife, girlfriend or family members. Getting a gamer to play a game isn't hard to do unless it results in torture or loss of life, and some of us may find the gamble with death a fun mini game addition! And as impulsive as we are don't bother using budgeting as an excuse, I've spent my last dime on a key ring at E3 when I should've been setting back for college! So let's no lie, If you don't try a game it's either cause it looks like a festering pile of poo, has negative press or because you already spent your last dime on a game you regret buying, that's the life of a gamer.
Most common first endevours into rpgs though from what my friends and my own experiences suggest are usually because we like fantasy books or movies but have too short an attention span to try to endure either(I can't make myself watch an entire installment in the lotr trilogy, I need to interact with shit to enjoy it and no matter how hard i reach for the elf chick the screen always blocks my attempts, leas a game keeps me from flicking ears, juggling pennies and shooting spitballs at people i guess.

Jesus dude, did you spend a day writing that in MS to make sure it was up to your standards before submitting? OP asked a simple question, not something to write a thesis paper about.
i think the first Rpg that got my into gaming was zelda OOT.... then i moved from rpg's later after final fantasy 8.and i started playing Ragnarok online when the beta came out and i still like Ro.
Hmm gmae that got me started ehh this would be for rpg's no doubt but what got me started in gmaes in general was a game on an old 5.4" floppy. It's been recreated as gunbound but that was the game that got me started for the computer. Consoles Duck hunt ftw. Ad rpg's well i would have to say zelda also. But mmo rgp's was and old one on cd called i think travelrs tales or something to that nature (ya needed a 56k modem to play). This mmo was the start of a company wiht the same name ro simalar to the name of the game (had a racoon on it and the game is burried under lots fo stuff so i can't give you a exact name). but this is all waht got me started no i feel old thankyou. Oh well im off to watch luaral and hardy and listen to the beatles.

For me it was Pen and Paper D&D back in the 80s. I actually owned "Chainmail" which was the pre-cursor to D&D.
I then played Wizardry and the old text adventures. Then came Meridian 59 and the kicker; Everquest!
mine would be zelda "nes"
after that came breath of fire 2 "SNES" then chrono trigger, then after that a whole lot of rpg's
then around 2000 we started going old school, got D&D forgot what module and version cause i no longer have it here and my girl keeps it, the manuals are good materials as she is making an rpg with rpg maker xp/vx,

D&D Started me roleplaying. EQ for PC got me into MMO's, but it wasn't until EQOA for PS2 that I completely turned over to the genre... I want an EQ3
Dungeons & Dragons 1st Edition, and 2nd Edition were my first games of RPG.
Later I moved on to Zelda (NES), The Bards Tale I & II for Apple IIe systems.
Kings Quest series, D&D Box sets (286sx 25MHz system).

General... That's right come back to that one.
Tales Of Pirates THEN QUIT THIS STUPID GAME,Fiesta Online
D&D for me, then a bunch of text based rpgs and finally MMOs.
I think it was either Runescape or Rose Online.... or Priston Tale. Rose Online was my favorite Mmorpg for months anyway.
Ultimate Game Card
My first was Final Fantasy 1 on the 2600 NES , but another good one from back then was a game called Dizzy you are this little egg and have to save Daisy from the evil Zak it was made by codemasters
there's been so many =p
i guess star frontiers or D&D was the first actual taste of rpg i had. don't remember which one was first since this was back in the early to mid 80s. it was also my first taste of anime cause i remember watching robotech on tv.

For RPG's it would be The Legend of Zelda OOT.
