Women Gamers and RPG (a "small" survey)

ApollosWillApollosWill Member UncommonPosts: 82

Hi all,

On one of the big RPG forums, there is a discussion covering “How to get more girls to play RPGs (not talking CRPGs, but the ones with a group of friends and around the table). One problem in that discussion is, that it is either males replying or females that already play.

So I will spring a couple (I know, it is a lot) of questions to the women here, which already play MMORPG and/or CRPGs, and hopefully get some objective answers. Any question answered, is appreciate, and can hopefully help in moving RPGs a step in the right direction for all, no matter gender. Please feel free to jump any question, you do not feel comfortable to answer or have time for. As said any (single) question answered is appreciated.

  1. What is your age?

  2. Do you role-play within a MMORPG and if, what RP character of yours comes to mind (a short description of behavior and background)?

  3. Please give the following themes a grade from 1-10 (1 as a “I hate that theme” and 10 as “I can’t get enough of that”: Combat, Drama, Love, Diplomacy and Journey.

  4. Any particular art/graphic you prefer, when it comes to depicturing characters (if you have a link to an example of such art, please post it. Please, keep rating in mind before linking. We don’t want anyone banned)?

  5. Any art/graphic that would prevent you from playing a game or read a comic, when it comes to depicturing characters (again, if you have a link to an example of such art, please post it. Please, keep rating in mind before linking. We don’t want anyone banned)?

  6. If you read comics, what is your favorite comic?

  7. Do you play RPGs? (if no, please jump to question no. 14)

  8. How did you get into RPGs?

  9. Which RPGs are you playing?

  10. Why are these your preferred RPGs?

  11. What kind of favorite character have you played (a short description of behavior and background)?

  12. Do you think RPGs need to change, to attract more women and if, what would help?

  13. No need to continue, if you play RPGs.

  14. What is your impression/idea of RPGs?

  15. Does any of your friends/relatives play RPGs?

  16. Have you ever been invited to play RPGs and if, why did you choose not to go?

  17. What fantasy, superhero or Sci-fi character from a movie, novel or comic, do you like the most, if any?

  18. Any suggestions to make RPGs more attractive for you?

Thank you all.

The ladies may not respond because your post does not allow them to answer anonymously.

Real women don't want to encourage online stalkers or any type of harassment. I'm not saying that you fit either category, but the ladies don't know who your are and have no reason to respond.

I suggest you try another tact.

You may want to do a search on books written about MMO development . I believe I saw one mentioned that talked about womens issues in MMO's on this very site.

    What is your age?
    18

Do you role-play within a MMORPG and if, what RP character of yours comes to mind (a short description of behavior and background)?
    No.

Please give the following themes a grade from 1-10 (1 as a “I hate that theme” and 10 as “I can’t get enough of that”: Combat, Drama, Love, Diplomacy and Journey.
I'm not big on rating scales but Combat, drama, love and journey are good. Not too big on diplomacy. :p

Any particular art/graphic you prefer, when it comes to depicturing characters (if you have a link to an example of such art, please post it. Please, keep rating in mind before linking. We don’t want anyone banned)?
Not particularly but I enjoy detailed artwork.

Any art/graphic that would prevent you from playing a game or read a comic, when it comes to depicturing characters (again, if you have a link to an example of such art, please post it. Please, keep rating in mind before linking. We don’t want anyone banned)?
Actually, yes. If something has to rely on fanservice/sex/naked girls or big boobs or what have you, then I'm usually put off by it.

If you read comics, what is your favorite comic?
I enjoy the Batman comics a lot. :p

Do you play RPGs? (if no, please jump to question no. 14)
    Yes.

How did you get into RPGs?
Been playing games since I was little.

    Which RPGs are you playing?
At the moment, just a few here and there. Don't have much time lately with job and trying to get financially stable.

Why are these your preferred RPGs?
    Eh.

What kind of favorite character have you played (a short description of behavior and background)?
No idea. I typically like strong female characters though.

Do you think RPGs need to change, to attract more women and if, what would help?
Not really. Just make sure it's not overly aimed at fanboys. (Aka, big boobs, skimpy outfits) because I know a lot of females that get turned off by video games like that. Strong main female characters that are relateable and maybe themes of romance would help a little too. Guys always get main characters to relate to, why can't we? :P

No, I find role-playing too.. broad? I guess.

    Combat - 9. Drama - 1. Love - 4. Diplomacy - 9. Journey - 10.

If you refer to any of the art style of X-Men, especially how the women body is portrayed, probably that. More of an extremely cartoon, edgy, and VERY over-exagerrated feel.

I would like to say the cliche' Korean/Asian graphics are beggining to bug me, but i'd be lieing. I just don't like anything that is anatomically incorrect. Spellborn [while i'm excited about it] comes off as one of those games, even though it is the game I hope to make my new home once it arrives.

If you read comics, what is your favorite comic?
    Spawn, and JTHM. Easy.

Do you play RPGs? (if no, please jump to question no. 14)
Considering I do not know if this counts for MMORPG's, i'll say no. This seems more focused on table-top.

No need to continue, if you play RPGs.

What is your impression/idea of RPGs?
They are too broad, too many possibilties to a point that it annoys me.

Does any of your friends/relatives play RPGs?
    No.

Have you ever been invited to play RPGs and if, why did you choose not to go?
Yes, when I was younger. I wasn't able to drive, and the kids that did it were.... yea.

What fantasy, superhero or Sci-fi character from a movie, novel or comic, do you like the most, if any?
Remember Glacius from Killer Instinct Gold? He was tough.

Any suggestions to make RPGs more attractive for you?
No. I rather just play the game for the game, and not all the extra details.

Basically what I get from allot of women is they don't like all the T&A that is glorified in games.  The eye candy that most devs put in game that is made to exploit the female body for the males viewing pleasure.  I have a problem in that area as well.  I like to see sexy female characters too me it makes the game more exciting...LOL.  What can I do I am human and I am male and it comes naturally to look.  Yes, it is a cartoon body... but still.

I see the only way of fixing this problem is to make character customization more complex with both male and female bodies in games.  So you can choose to look sexy if you want to or not.  But then again this just might be too much to handle.

I actually think comics books are worse when it comes to sexy drawn female characters.  It looks like to me that the artist look at porn and draw the poses and then put them in the comic book with tight spandex underwear.  Where else would they get there ideas?

I think the OP is focusing more on the table top aspect, not the MMORPGs like WoW, EQ, etc.

Ps. I don't find it annoying that they make females hot in the games, I like being able to play a decent looking character.

That's cool.  But yeah table top or video game... the art.  I know you can't customize the appearance in table top...hehe... but I guess the art would be more involved this way.

Just a quick reply to that post :). I am certainly no stalker and do find a forum such as this the most anonymously way to do it. If there was any doubts, you do not have to leave your address, name and/or phone number ;).

To the replies of the survey. Thank you. I know it take a bit of time to reply to this post and that time taken is really appreciated. Still looking forward to see more.
