Funcom And The Five-O: Tales From Dragoncon
We can be a bit more casual, talk to fans, have a good time, and say, “Hey, everyone wants to see the Demonologist, let's bring it out next round.” Most importantly, we're able to get the game into the hands of regular fans and players. Anyone who made it to Atlanta and got a convention badge could play, and judging by the reports on the forums and all the people we ran into, quite a lot of you did.
Highlights of the weekend include:
Being offered a child for a beta key. Yes, the baby was at the booth.
Hearing someone's phone click open and them saying, “Hey, I'm gonna be late. I have to check out this Conan game.” This happened several times a day, and it was awesome every single time.
Our Age of Conan presentation was so popular that we not only had to split it up to get more people through, we were told the cops were called at one point to contain some of the madness in the hall. Even though we ran through two sessions, we still didn't get everyone who wanted to see the game through. The turnout was nothing short of incredible, and we would like to thank you all for coming out.
We have confirmed, and shown, female avatars! They're hot, they're sexy, and they can still skin you alive or do unspeakable things to you with demonic magic.
We also demonstrated some of the fatalities and even previewed character creation for some lucky fans.
Most importantly, Dragoncon is about the fans. We ran into some old ones that managed to clock over 10 hours played during the course of the four days. We made a bunch of new ones, if the passionate group of people lurking around the monitors at any given time can serve as a guide. The response to the combat system was incredibly good.
And, of course, some guys couldn't be distracted at all.
Words don't quite do the current iteration justice, but give someone a quick walkthrough of how it works, let them play it for a few minutes, and suddenly, they understand. It was loads of fun to watch it click, especially with a new player or someone who didn't play games at all, and see them start laying waste to all opponents. While it was only two-on-two at the show, it was fun to see how multiplayer is going to work, especially when it's six people taking on six people on the same map.
And though Dragoncon is over, that's far from the end for us. One unfortunate soul missed the last part of the show to head to Austin for AGC, and the convention season churns on, and we've got the game development, beta, and everything else to look forward to! We'd like to thank everyone who came out for the show and hope to see all of you soon!
