Is there an item in SL that can eliminate the shadows and roughness of a character's complexion when light shines directly onto the face (such as during daytime or under artificial lighting)? Especially for my character, the shadows and roughness (I guess the roughness comes from the slight blocky-ness of the graphics) makes her look really old. I've attached a comparison screenshot.
During daytime (rough complexion):
At sunset (smoother complexion):
As you can see, the second picture looks more natural. I have an item called "Lights" equipped that is supposed to smoothen and lighten the face. The "Lights" instructions also tells me to uncheck the Avatar Vertex Program in Preferences -> Graphics Detail, which is greyed out for me, but unchecked. However the face still looks pretty rough.
Any advice is appreciated ^^

It's more than likely just the effect of the light's position at full noon; it looks pretty bleh on everyone. I usually just adjust the world lighting when it's that time of day in the sim I'm visiting. If you look under "world," you'll notice a tab marked "force sun." Just set it to either sunset or sunrise, and that should take care of it. At nighttime, a lot of the natural light effects look very good. But straight overhead sunlight usually looks pretty bad. It did in SWG, too, the game I came to SL from.

Hehe it turned out that I had "local lights" turned off in the graphics tab. Though with local lights on there is much more lag. ><
