I agree this game licks balls and is just wacky... Why would i want to play a video game where i can go get on a computer and play a video game? jus makes no fuckin sense...
I dont play SL, but that brings up a question.....
If you are playing a game, and your avatar is playing a game, and his avatar is playing a game, and so on... who is really playing the game?
SecondLife is to me, all about having a 3d enviroment in which I can envision, design, and create things. I have been working on a skate park for quite long time, and although it totally flopped monetarily, it gained me respect in the eyes of other designers, and my friends.
Most MMORPG's are not designed as creative tools, and quite honestly do not specifically teach you anything. SecondLife has taught me, by my own hand and the tutorials available, how to script, stream music, DJ online, and design in 3D. I know there are a lot of coders out there redesigning GUI's for MMORPG's, but almost all of these people are already trained, or training in coding, and its just a new challenge for someone already skilled at a particular piece of technological knowhow.
SecondLife has tons of information for anyone self-motivated to learn, tons of support for those who want to step beyond just playing, and go on to learning. The dev community is rediculous, with skill levels way beyond what I might hope to understand, the open source community powerful and active, and the scripting community is awesome as well.
If you have no interest in learning, stay away from SL, and you will not hate it. Come to learn, expand your abilities, and create, you will love it.
I am a resident in Second Life as well. I even met my soon-to-be real life wife there too. In January, we're going to be married.
SL is an incredible tool. It's always funny to hear newbies enter the "game" and ask how to "beat" it. The thing is, there is no focused goals in SL. While SL has gaming elements to it, it's not really a game. It is more like a platform and some people do use it for gaming and RPing.
But, where SL really shines is in creativity and socializing. No other online experience provides the user with access to a variety of creative outlets. All forms of digital media as well as programming are represented here. All of the objects in the world are created by the users. From the pink bow in your hair to giant massive building projects, these are things things we design, not some overpaid developer.
I have personally made my own t-shirts, built my own art gallery featuring my own RL and SL art. I'm currently saving up for a sim so that I too can build and hopefully create an interesting enough place to attract people to come and hang out.
While I still play games, when I want to socialize or be creative, SL is where I go. I dream that one day an MMO developer will create something similar to SL in that they provide a massive word and give toolsets to let the players design the world. It would be nice to be let loose on an empty world and have the players design their own homes, towns & cities.
Do I hate it because I expected there to be actual game play? No. Do I hate it because you have to role play? No. Do I hate it because it is one big virtual shopping mall? OH MY GOD YES. IT'S 10% ROLE PLAY. 90% PEOPLE TRYING TO SELL YOU CRAP!
BTW, it's only 10% RP because you never really bothered to explore the dozens upon dozens of player created and controlled RP sims. Granted SL combat leaves a lot to be desired, but if you're interested in looking the part and RPing the part, you will find no shortage of RPing in SL.
As for the commerce part of it, so what. If you roam around mainland, you can develop the idea that SL is nothing but shopping. But, if you don't take the time to search (search tool is your best friend in SL) for places to go, you'll never truly discover what SL is about. Anybody can fly around mainland and see hundreds of failed malls by "get rich quick" idiots or people who basically lacked skills to make their projects shine.
Seriously, your complaints come from general lack of patience and time spent in SL.
Anyway, nobody HAS to RP either. Where'd you get that idea? While in SL, I am the same person that I am in rea life. I never RP but I'll hang out in RP areas. Why? Because that's where to cooler people hang out. I love the themed areas (sci-fi, fantasy, steampunk, etc) and all the costumes and accessories that go with it.
My avatar is a steampunk cyborg but I don't RP him that way. SL allows people to dress up and be what ever look they want to be. When I'm dancing with my finacee, I switch to a sexy human male skin complete with metrosexual hair. It's all good. I don't get why so many people hate SL. Why do you hate socializing, fantasy and creativity so much?
This last post sums up the problem with SL nicely. Most of what you can do in this oddity, you can do easily and much more enjoyably in other games. I've tried SL twice, it's laggy, difficult to understand and filled with people who you have to suspect have very little in the way of a RL social life. They're trying sooo hard to make a success of their odd little virtual existences, yet, the fact is, you can wander into the town square in Stormwind any night of the week and hear more lively interaction and see more fun going on that you'll ever see in the staid, downright weird world of SL. It happens because social interaction (and selling stuff) are the only raisons d'etre for SL, leading most normal people to wonder, why would you bother? You can do this in your own RL every day and if you're that desperate to meet people, you can go to chatroom. Yes, there are people who love this 'game' and probably always will be. I've just never been able to get it...
Same here, both times I tried it. It was so laggy I could barely move anywhere...
Thing is I have a pretty good internet connection, I blame my countries infrastructure and my computer can run Crysis on medium settings...
Sick of playing Entropia Universe? Want to quit, but don't want your hard earned money to vanish? Give your items to ME :-)

If you could figure out how to leave the god forsaken noob fest of "Miramare" which is the lag infested hangout for noobs you'd actually find some interesting stuff. I'm sure you had the blue jeans, white T-shirt, and poofy hair thing going on for ya eh? Take the tutorial, look at the top right of your screen, search for sandbox, teleport there, and then learn your crap. If you think it's just about socializing, you never took the time to explore it, contact "Nalrune Ansar" that's me, I'll guide you all through Second Life and show you what experiences can be fun, they have PvP places ya know? Where you can punch+kick the shit out of each other with custom animations that you can even make yourself, I'm an animator, a builder, and I make textures. Did I mention you can make real money off Second Life using those Linden Dollars.
I forgot to mention, there's swords, throwing knives, guns, cannons, C4, laser guns, light sabers, anything imaginable. There's bow and arrow, RPG games within Second Liufe, flaming arrows, ice arrows, spells, teleportation, laser eyes, anything fucking imaginable I'm telling you. You can even make your own shit!!! Want to make a watermelon launcher? How about a spitball and straw? Want to join a Japanese community where role-playing is a requirement... yeah do it.... and they might have enemies such as the Nords, (who are real players) that will come and assault, raid, and pillage you and your fellow friends, and home. Once you get to the sandbox, figure out how to IM people, send "Nalrune Ansar" (ME) an Instant Message, and I'll fill you in on the basics and whatever.
I loaded up Second Life and made the must ugly avatar I possibly could. It was a woman that was about 500 pounds and 4' tall with feather hair growing out of its body from a nasty/poorly fitting pair of clothing.
There were people hanging out in outfits that were all stylish (for how bad the graphics are, anyway) and were obviously very serious about the environment. I was running around, flying and asking them if they would "please be my friend!"
They were so serious, upset, and angry that I was approaching them. It was some of the funniest stuff I've ever seen. They would do this stupid thing where they bumped me and made me go flying back. I also logged in back in the day when there were nuts wars where ww2 online people were freaking out against some anti-war people.
I certainly admire the humorous possibilities in Second Life, but ultimately, I guess I don't get why someone would take it too seriously.

Wow. I can't believe people are still posting on this thread I made over a year ago. I still stand by my opinion that started this thread.
However!
For the last 6 months I have been playing Second Life again after friends dragged me back in. I now no longer hate it. It has made quite a turn around since my first time using the client. It has upgraded its graphics and physics engine among other things. Plus there is real time combat and role play sims that I have found and enjoy greatly.
Though one hurdle in Second Life is you have to pay real life money if you want your avatar to look good, if you want to upload things and if you want to own land. I have a job in real life, so money isn't much of an issue to me. You can still play Second Life, use all the freebie things (if you can find it) and not spend a cent, but you won't have the highest quality looking avatar, etc.
An example of a lazy and tight person's avatar:

The thing I have come to realise now is. When combined with a combat system (like CCS) and with role play. It is like any other MMO (only with all players than NPCs). But of course. Second Life is only as good as you make it.

I had lots of fun making combat systems for wierd avatars. Including dragons, smaller quadropeds, werewolfs, and pretty much anything else(people considered me well worth it having customized scripts that were 'sighted' in for their avatar and looked good). I also made a few meters and could hack together a new one or safezone derivative in an hour or two, I wouldn't bother with CSS since the large part of that system is it's external database.
I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.
Hey Azure- It's Missy! Imagine my shock to see your thread here on how you 'hate' SL. Though you redeemed yourself at the end.

Yes all, I am not only Second Player (and in game friend of Azure's), I am a veteran of the game.
There's a hell of a lot more than 'pixel sex' in Second Life. I have GM'd in two different roleplay sims, where you will see every creature every imagined playing their stories freely. The creativity in SL allows your imagination to simply soar.

Yes SL has its share of shopping, but in turn the amount of clothing, skins, bodies, hair, and accessories the community has created lets everyone be truly unique. Just last night I shopped for a Tux, went to a live in-game performance by a wonderful singer, and dance with an amazing woman, SL is an environment unlike any other. I would be happy to provide any landmarks you may need for your exploration.
...in the end there was no Good and Evil only living and dead...
i also play second life, i myself think its rather fun and yes i work 40 hours a week fulltime also and have a life. I look at second life as a relaxing type game where you dont have to worry about leveling up grinding or hearing people whine all the time about how things are sooo unbalanced and everything needs to be nerfed. But yea i can also see your point also its alot of selling and buying also, everyone is entitled to their own opinion and the have the right to voice it, bottom line is if u like it play it, if you dont, dont play it. Well have fun with what ever you do.

Spend a week in a CCS sim. I dare you. Missy can tell you how it can be. Hehe.
SL is great and all for a creative outlet. But eventually there is only so much you can do. More people and stablity would improve it how ever. With my time zone, majority of sims are dead.
Any ways. Decided to head back to WoW with my girlfriend from there. That's the best thing that came out of SL for me. ^_^
1. Second Life is NOT a game. Why its included on gaming sites is beyond me. It makes more sense to include it on sites having to do with social networking.
2. Second Life is not a roleplay environment. Just because you can create an avatar that is NOT you, doen't mean you are roleplaying. Most people act and speak as they do in real life when interacting in the virtual environment.
3. Of course SL looks like a big shopping mall. Commerce is a primary function in SL. You would know that if you read anything about SL before jumping into it.
4. Second Life allows business, education, social networking, entertainment, and many other things to be conducted in a virtual environment. That's the beauty of SL. It brings people across the world together to be able to do things they normally could not do because of distance and the shortcomings of conventional technology.
The WORST thing that has ever happened to SL is people identifying it as a game.

I know it's not a game, i have a business on there and i'm gonna have to relocate my store to Zindra.
It may not be a game listing, but there are LOTS of roleplaying servers on there so i dont know how it couldnt be considered some parts a game as well. When he said the 10 % i do believe he was meanin on those ROLEPLAYING servers not the social ones i mean seriously cmon. I have friends in there that run buisnesses as well and make damn good at it, but some of these buisnesses are *roleplaying merchandising*. Theres a little of everything for almost any kind of person, so to say its not a game, well maybe its not but its not all social either. Its a fantasy world just like any other chat, social, gaming, whatever places, hell even games have socializing. I have to agree on this last update, and the crazy ways its been acting up it blowsssssss! With only the few experiences i have had with it cause im hardly in there, since im in WoW now mostly but those few times have been enough to make you want to scream somtimes....which sl done that alot anyways.
I didn't like it because when I tried it a friend was showing me around and I was accosted by an avatar dressed as a spartan with an enormous erect penis.

I dont play SL, but that brings up a question.....

I think MissyDevoix got it right.
Second Life is what YOU make it.
There are no "quests" no hard line rules to follow.
To go into Second Life and say "I'm bored" means you have NO imagination, and expect some CORPORATE entity to spoon feed you like a baby.
Second Life offers everything you could want, with some give & take.
I havent been on it as much, maybe 2-3 times a week. Yet my shop still makes $$. It pays for itself and then some.
I think the problem with most of the Naysayers is, they come to Second Life expecting to be "fed". There is no being "fed" in SL. Its what you can make of it.
As it says "Your World, Your Imagination".
Some folks just have NO imagination.
Actually you can script up some nice food so you can be "fed"
I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.

I'm in it too,and i love hanging out at clubs and whatnot and listening to music.
But the newest viewer 1.23.4 is kinda wonky.
The only things i hate is bots inflating traffic, and griefers using megaprims to cause lag.

I logged out and never returned.
What exactly is the need for this?
