Ok,

I'm in a pickle....

I'm currently playing FFXI. I just cancelled all my WoW accounts yesterday, and buried the key to them. I want to be rid of that game for good. I don't know why I can't stand it anymore.. I just don't like it.

FFXI takes me back to the olden days of mmo's.. where grouping was not only encourage, but required. You didn't "quest" as much as you grinded and camped. WoW is a single player game inside a big chat room. No immersiveness. FFXI has all the things that I liked about some of the older mmo's.. I hate how everything in these new games is instanced/easy mode. There aren't many hardships to get through. However, FFXI is missing one thing.. PVP...

so here's what I am looking for... and here's what I have already tried.

ALREADY TRIED

------------------------

EQ1 (graphics weren't bad, lower cost than the others, but the interface and camera controls were annoying)

Anarchy Online (LAG, LAG, LAG)

Flyff (I liked the graphics.. they were a change from the norm. However noone spoke english, and the quests were written in gibberish. I had no clue what I was doing)

Shadowbane (bad graphics, but I could get over it for a good game. the controls killed it for me.. i cannot "click to move" unless i also have the option to use w,a,s,d)

DaOC (love it! but... seems that the game is on its last leg. Not sure if its worth my time now, or worth my 12.95 a month + game software fees to play a game that might not even be around another 6 months.. thoughts?)

Features I am looking for

-----------------------------------

1.) Hardcore.. doesn't nesseccarily have to take a long time, but I don't mind that it does. I want something I can spend alot of time developing and working towards. I don't want any "I can get to 60 in a week" games.

2. )group based leveling. I don't mind some stuff being solo.. but i don't want to be running around by myself all the time.

3.) mature community. I don't want to play with a bunch of 10 yr olds (WoW) I don't care about age as long as the maturity factor is there. I also don't want to play a game where noone talks ever. (GW)

4.) lots of classes and races to choose from. I'd love it to be extremely customizable. Most mmo's are very dull in that area. if the characters themselves can't be customized. at least have alot of races to choose from, and classes as well.

5.) HUGE explorable world. I don't want to be traversed down a linear path, I want to explore.

6.)PVP! It doesn't have to be the main focus but that would be nice. thats why i liked DaoC. If not the main focus, hardcore kill or be killed pvp would be great. not this pansy WoW crap.

7.) Longevity. I want a game that will be around a while. nuff said.

8.) Old school mmo tendencies.. you old schoolers know what I mean by this. WoW is the exact opposite of this.

9.) P2P or F2P i don't care either way.

well.. thats pretty much it. Before you suggest any of the games that haven't come out yet. I don't think any of them are gonna be what I am looking for.  suggest Away!

AoC, but you need to wait 6 more months.

PVP should be awesome, the settings are quite immersive, I am not sure about the leveling pace though.

I think it will be in the fast mode.

Decent crafting and interaction with the comunity, also is 18+ so at least it should keep few kids away (Although I am sure there will be tons of kids that will play anyway, since their dads won't know that AoC is 18+)

I can also suggest you Vanguard, now is a decent game, very nice comunity, slow leveling, huge world, lots of features, the only thing I am not sure is the committment from SoE to keep developing the game.

Although the best game that fits your description is Darkfall..................if it ever get released.............

Well, since AOC and DF are a ways away, consider breaking the mold and giving EVE a trial (Trial is totally free).  What have you got to lose?  Its a nice break from fantasy MMO's as well....

yeah, thats why said something about not mentioning games that aren't out yet.

I'm not upgrading my pc to play them

I like eye candy as much as the next guy.. but all these new games seem to be just that.. all eye candy. As much as I hate WoW.. they made the game accessible.

Vanguard requires like a massive beast of  a machine to even play on low.

Not anymore, it runs much more smoothly now.

If you can run EQ2 at high details, you should be able to run Vanguard too.

The problem is that you are one of a group who always come to these boards asking for the same thing: a return to an older style of game.

Everything that you list is somethng that has been discussed ad infinitum on these and other boards.

I have no illusions that any upcoming game will give you what you want. Part of this is becasue the mmo landscape has attracted a larger audience. This audience doesn't always want what you have listed.

They don't have the time or inclination  to be hardcore or to group all the time. That is because they want to play the game as a "game". It really is a diversion and nothing more.

Because of this large group of people, game makers are trying to lure them to their projects.

It's going to be a little while before you see a return to some of the older game conventions.

Yeah, that's a good suggestion. The problem is that I'm unsure of its longevity. Still, it is one of the only "modern" games that harkens back to an older style of play.

And of course, everyone knows that it has its issues.

Lineage 2 is my game of choice but you really have to be driven, goal oriented, and aware of the extremely hard economy as well as the fact that you will be leveling solo for a bit. The new player areas are light of players.

Part of this is because the game has been out for a while, but mostly (in my opinion) because it is a pvp game and "hanging around" the new player areas serves no purpose as you want to level quickly to be effective. Keep in mind that "quickly" is relative as there is a bit of a grind.

It is mostly a grind game. The quests are utilitarian at best. So if you are looking for great quests then move on.

DAOC seems like a good choice but I can't get a handle on it. Some say it's flourising and some say it's on its last legs. I tried it briefly but I couldn't get used to the controls. And it's dated.

EQ2 could be an excellent choice but it is mostly a quest based game. And in my opinion, not a very beautiful one. The whole world just seems bland and brown to me. That is of course my opinion.

It does offer quite a few classes and races though. And more character customizaton than L2.

Lineage 2 is gear based so you get a lot of players looking the same because they want to use the optimum gear. Not a huge amount of faces and hair styles for your character.

I agree, the world might look a bit plastic.

But EQ2 is not very quest oriented at all (although there are thousands of quests).

I have 3 lvl 70 and hardly done any quest.

EQ2 is group oriented, the fastest way to level is grouping in dungeons.

Also the end game is all about Raids.

But it is basically a casual game.

    To the OP.

Vanguard seems your best option I guess, otherwise EQ1 or UO, but they are 8 y/o games..............

  • XiaokiXiaoki Member EpicPosts: 4,036

raystantz - I don't think you know what you want?

You want an "old school" required grouping MMO with hardcore PvP? Can't think of anything at all.

Are the PvP servers on EQ1 or EQ2 "hardcore"? I dont know I havent played on them.

It sounds like EQ or Vanguard would be for you.

Kyleran - must you come into every single topic on this board and promote EVE? I mean really. The OP asked for a Old school required grouping/solo unfriendly MMO and you suggest EVE?!

I'd say try Ryzom but it may not last till the end of the month.  It's an excellent old school sand box style game that is very group oriented.

    QFT Sovrath.

The only game with a good enough population size that has the features you want Raystantz is EVE online.

I personally hated the "gain skill over time" advancement model instead of a true skill based model (where you gain skills from using them) and that killed it for me

EQ2 is very WoW and LOTRO like.

Lineage 2 is suppose to be really good PVP game once you get to the end game, but the grind to get there is supposedly unbarable for many. I only ever playeda trial of L2 and that was long ago.
