Hi guys, brand new to these forums..so bear with me. As the title states LOTRO is my first and only MMO. Ive been playing it for about 5 months now, and while I have enjoyed it a lot, I would like to explore the MMO scene a little more. Here are some of the things I would like in my next MMO:
1. Mainly PVE (or at least the choice not to participate in PVP)
2. Good crafting system (really enjoyed this in LOTRO)
3. Questing and levelling is ok, grinding I could live without.
4. Good economy, with the opportunity to make in-game money if I feel like it.
5. Modern, good looking, good gameplay.
6. Learning curve not to steep, but still with depth.
7. F2P or P2P both ok, happy to pay for a good experience.
8. Would love a good historical MMO, but genre not that important.
9. Good character development, Im not into RP, but would like to work towards improving toons.
Looking over this list I guess you could say that Im looking for a game that is a lot like LOTRO. I hope these things make sense and are not contradictory (remember Im still a MMO nub). I would really appreciate your thoughts on this. I will of course be availing myself of any free trials I can find, but a little advice/direction from the combined experience in these forums would be a great help.

EQ2
I believe a lot of MMORPGS will have some of what you are looking for. I believe the big dog MMORPGs (EQ2, WoW) will have the most of the list you presented.

I would also say EQ2 or WoW. If you really enjoy crafting, EQ2 will offer one of the best experiences. However, you stated you are looking for a game that is a lot like LOTRO, so WoW may actually be closer to what you seek.
To cover your points:
1. EQ2 (assuming you don't pick a PVP server) is pure PVE. You can duel if you choose, but that's it. WoW has PVP present on all servers; however, it is not forced upon you.
2. EQ2 crafting is really well done. Can be a bit confusing at first as you have to counter effects that take place while you are at the workstation. It's not click a button and walk away.
3. Both EQ2 and WoW have quests. However, WoW is more similar to LOTRO in that quests lead you to the zones you should be hunting for your level. In EQ2 you sometimes have to do a bit of exploring to find the quests and zones for hunting. Some prefer being led, others don't.
4. Think both offer opportunities for making money. However, I personally prefer EQ2's broker system to WoW's auction house. Unless they changed things since I left, when you put something up for sale at WoW's auction house, it has a limited duration and expires if it doesn't sell. In EQ2, you can set up a sales crate in your home and your items have no expiration. Players can then buy through the broker for a 20% fee or go directly to your home and pay no fee. In addition to item drops and crafted items, they also have collection quests, just giving you another way to make money.
5. Both good looking and offering good game play in my opinion.
6. Neither have steep learning curves and both offer depth. WoW is usually considered to be easier than EQ2.
7. Both P2P
8. Neither are historical, both are fantasy.
9. Good character development can be found in both games.
Hope this helps. Much luck and have fun.
I agree. You just described EQ2 almost to a tee. Try it out I think you'll love it.
Go for WOW, just because everyone should have given it a try... (and there's a free trial I believe)

Damn I am tempted to try EQ2 the amount of times its been praised. If you have a huge rig then try Vanguard as well. At the top level the graghics are amazing and I played for about 5 months (a lot) and crafting is one thing that really kept me going. I believe there is a free trial. Plus you get the benefit of having it seriously tweaked and pretty much bugless for the most part.
Last Chaos is a free game I played. Is ok but I did'nt like the mouse click and point system. Graghics reasonable.
What about D&D anyone? I played the trial but I have no idea the state of play today.
Pirates of the Burning Sea is coming out in January and you can play a nation and its historical.
I think there is one here www.everquest2.com/freeTrial.vm
If I'm wrong, sorry, I just looked briefly.
OK..thanks heaps for all of your quick replies to this, much appreciated. EQ2 has a free trial so Im going to D/L and try it. One thing I didnt mention is that im in my 30's so was looking for a more "Mature" community. This one reason I have avoided WoW, as I was told that it was a little juvenile at times. Still a free trial cant hurt to try for myself. Thanx again for all of your input, and keep the suggestions coming.
With any game you will run into the possibility of a juvenile community. Find yourself a guild with good people and it makes WoW worth it. I didnt play EQ2 for long, but i liked it quite a bit, so either give it, or WoW a try. Otherwise I cant really recommend anything that is out yet.
Thankyou Paul22, you reminded me of another thing. Are there any games in development /beta that match my criteria, that I should keep an eye on?
Your best option is to try EQ2 trial and Wow trial and see wich one you like better. Personally i have played WoW for allmost 2 years, but i got fed up with nothing to do but raid or grind faction upon reaching level cap. Tried 3-4 other MMOs untill I stumbled upon EQ2 about 10 months ago- and i fell in love. Great community and an amazing amount of stuff to do. It really showed me how a MMO can be all about the journy and not rushing mindlessly to the destination.
