If you think about it its pretty bad, with paid server transfer there was already the issue with players in high-end guilds just applying to better guilds and suddently leaving without any prior warning, changing name was as easy as just creating a character with your name on the target server and change your original one on the transfer, now with paid name change you will see this problem coming down to the casual players, scammers and griefers will just pay to change the name.

What a sham. The paid server transfer is bad enough, but this is preposterous. It's not like this is a process that costs them any money to perform--it's just a transfer of electronic data. I understand how adding a fee cuts down on people from constantly hopping servers and changing names, but you think Blizzard would throw some kind of bone to the fans who pay their salaries every month.

Not true, it probably did cost them money to write a script to copy all the data from one server to the other, same with the name, its not a simple drag and drop process, there are backups  and all sorts of information that need to be renamed and moved properly. But at the end of the day the fee is to avoid people abusing the system. I dont think this should be allowed at all, sure free server transfers when a server is collapsing due to so many people, or name change when there is a collision of names under those circunstances but giving this power to the players is like giving a "get out of jail free card", the spoiled kids will use this to get away with scamming and other various things.

EDIT: maybe i should say "Get out of jail $10 card"

Honestly do some basic research b4 you flame away. You can only change your name every 90 days.. and mail/aution/ignore lists etc will auto update with the new name.

I would prefer for the characters old name to appear when they chat or put up autions for say 30 days. after a change but hey MMOs have name change features. Why is it only bad when WoW does it?

    Paid Character Name Change FAQ

How much does this service cost?

Each Paid Character Name Change costs $10.00 (not including applicable taxes). This covers a single name change for a single character.

What if the name I want is already in use?

Character names are unique on a per-realm basis. You cannot change to a character name that is already in use by another player on your realm.

What happens to my character's old name?

Once the name change is complete, your character's old name will be locked from use on the realm for 90 days. After that time, the old name can be claimed by anyone on a first-come, first-served basis. If you want to retain the use of that name you will have to reclaim it before anyone else does.

What about my guild and my friends?

Your character will remain in your guild, and you will remain on all friends lists for people who had added you. The only difference is that you will have a new name, so you should let your friends and guildmates know it's you.

Can people use this feature to get off my ignore list?

No. Characters whose names are changed will remain on your ignore list, but their names will be updated automatically.

Will this affect mail or auctions for my character?

Your existing mail and auctions will not be interrupted or cancelled, but you should let your friends know before you make the change, so they don't send new mail to the old name.

Can I change multiple character names at once?

The Paid Character Name Change service only allows one change per transaction. If you would like to change multiple character names, you will need to pay for each one separately.

Can I change my character’s name again if I want to?

Yes, but after completing a Paid Character Name Change, that specific character cannot have his/her name changed again for 90 days.  Once the 90-day waiting period is over, you would need to purchase a new Paid Character Name Change if you would like to perform a new change.

What will happen to my Armory Profile?

Once you have completed the Paid Character Name Change process, your Armory profile will be updated to reflect your character's new name.

Didnt say it was only bad in WoW is bad in any MMORPG in my opinion. I pointed this out on WoW since it is relevant to the topic and it has actually happen several times in my guild.

I think its a bad idea if any MMORPG permits it...not just Blizzard/WOW.  Your actions in game end up in determining your reputation..and allowing someone to do this permits people to be jerks, then just change their name and escape any consequences......

I recall one jerk in DAOC who ran Dragon raids on Mordred for almost a year....and fairly distributed the loot among all the folks afterwards.

One day he decided to just keep all the loot for himself (it was a considerable amount), he transferred the loot to another account and then sold the account that he stole with.... (that poor buyer sure got a surprise when he logged in)

If they had permitted name changes he could have gotten away scott free and not borne any consequences...

Its a bad idea..... but then again, Blizz seems to be implementing more of them these days....

So giving the people what they want is a bad idea now? Uh, yeah, sure. That must be why WoW has no subscribers.

Kyleran - the example you use is terrible because thats a one in a million scenario. Also, a situation like that would not work in WoW because all of his legacy information(player crafted items, AH posts, friends lists, etc) would be changed to his new name and it wouldn't take people long to find out his new name.

Not to mention that anyone with a bad reputation on a server will be able to shed that reputation for less than it costs to transfer servers.

Anyone get the feeling that Blizzard is trying to scrape the last bit of gas out of their car before everyone leaves.
