Ok, I'm realizing I like PvP more and more. And, I really like the MMO model of building a character over time - so you can see a progression that unfolds over months. WAR is looking more and more inviting to me.
My question is: does anyone have any suggestions for FPS-like games that give a sense of long-term accomplishment, like building a character? (yea yea wishing for "accomplishment" in a video game is silly, but you know what I mean.) I enjoy instanced battles, and I know there are many games out there focused on this, but I'm hoping for something more than just isolated battles. I really know very little about the FPS realm, and could use something different to tide me over while I wait for WAR/AoC, etc. Thanks for any suggestions.

Personally I Love Battlefield 2142.. Also I'd like to recommend Planetside though it requires subscription fee.
As for MMOs with fps like battles Chronicles of Spellborn seems to contain this, though in development, and Fury seems to be FPS like as well, or atleat pvp centric. Haven't played or looked into these two though so I may be wrong.
Call of Duty 4:
But I will agree, that 2142 is a lot of fun.
MMORPG Maker
can you build your own personal character in 2142? didnt know that :0
Huxley is a game coming out very soon that has fps in a mmorpg setting thus why it is called a mmofps
I was just wondering... You say that you love pvp, and that you arewaiting for AoC, WAR, etc.. Did you ever try Dark Age of Camelot?? In that game you build your character up over a long time, gaining ranks etc....
If you want to try, I recommend playing on the american classic servers! Thats the best place regarding population! Lots of action!
If only some one would make a newer version of DAOC and just improve on the flaws. Take out the long PvE grind, make it less gear/buff centric, and expand the RvR. Wouldn't be the "perfect" MMO, but I'd play it...
If its PvP you r looking for. Try out DAOC (Dark Age of Camelot: which is the same company that is making WAR). To adress the above poster, therre is barely a grind anymore in DAOC. Buff centric it may be, but that is less so on the classic servers. Gear centric...well name me a game where a flaming god sword wont beat a Bronze peon dagger.
Also good options include Guild Wars, and Fury (although Ive heard some people dislike this game)
Good Luck
Torrential
Torrential: DAOC (Pendragon)
Awned: World of Warcraft (Lothar)
Torren: Warhammer Online (Praag)
Well Team Fortress 2, has classes which are much more diverse than in other FPSs. So although there really arent any ranks or progression, it does have the variety of roles than MMOs have which other shooters do not
Tanks (heavy's and soldiers), Healers(medics w/ medic gun), Crafters (engineers FTW), long range(sniper), basically melee (pyro's), annoying fast moving hard to hit guys (scouts), grenade guy (demoman), rogue/disguise as other team guy (spy)
This is my recommendation as well. TF2 is a very well designed game. I have Call of Duty 4, Planetside, BF2, BF1942, BF2142, BF2:SF, Savage, CS:S, and Crysis installed on this machine. Yet I find myself playing Team Fortress 2 the most, just because it is the funnest to play. The character models are amazing, the Orange Box is the best investment I've made entertainment wise this year.. and the game is HOT right now.
So that is my 2 cents. If you are against TF2 for some reason, try out Call of Duty 4.. though it is not quite newb friendly being killed in 2-3 shots.. insta-gibbed by grenades, rpg's, and snipers.

And yea, I was on a classic server. Leveling was much faster than it use to be, even though I was just grinding mobs. Over all though, I still think that having 50 levels of grinding in a PvP game is a bad idea, even if they're much faster. And, it seems like it would be a good idea for them to drop their sub price. Most people aren't going to pay $15 per month when there are newer games out there, even if the PvP is much better in DAOC.
Have you tried Planetside? It is, to date, the only true MMOFPS. Games like TF2 and Battlefield track your stats, but you don't have a persistent character or customizable skill sets like in Planetside. And none of those games can even come close to a balls-to-the-wall Planetside firefight with hundreds of people fighting at once. If you have not experienced it yet, give it a try.
CoD4 , TF2 , and the always good CS:S.
My fav atm CoD4

If you want to play TF2 and dont have it already. If your going to get it (which i highly recommend) Best buy is selling it for 25$ Fri-sat only. so get down there tomorrow and grab one man, its a steal at that price. You get the Orange Box which includes HL2, EP1 & 2, TF2, and Portal its the best deal in gaming right now for FPS games. no doubt atleast give it a shot at that price.

It's an oldie but a goodie and going decent. Its on the doom engine. Build your characters hp's, spells, skills and romp someone.
I just went back after a trillion years of not playing it. So far so fun. Im on 102.
Truth. It's the only MMOFPS other than World War II Online. Huxley is coming soon, but will have far fewer in a fight than Planetside currently has.
MMO games played or tested: EQ, DAoC, Archlord, Auto Assault, CoH, CoV, EQ2, EVE, Guild Wars, Hellgate: London, Linneage II, LOTRO, MxO, Planetside, SWG, Sword of the New World, Tabula Rasa, Vanguard, WWIIOL, WOW, Age of Conan
