A Sandbox MMOG I'd Like to See

Prohibition Era America.

Career paths could include

  • Legitimate Business Owner
  • Illegal Business Owner
  • Police
  • Gangster Family
  • Gangster Entrepreneur
  • Federal Agent
  • Press
  • Legal (legal representation)
  • Courts (legitimate and graft)
  • Politician (reader idea)

No doubt more can be perceived.

Gameplay would focus heavily on territory, and nearly every type of career path has its foil. This is essentially a PVP game, though not all types of activity would involve killing players.

Combat is gansters versus authority, fighting for territory and control.

Market is player-run, the economy revolving around daily goods and illegal services.

Each of the basic career paths I've suggested have their own appropriate uses in the world, usually with one or more than one way of competition.

The general idea would be to recreate an urban environment where lawlessness was at odds with the law, and profits and reputation are always at stake.

Haven't seen much of anything in this era. Seems ripe for a great MMOG.

    Sounds interesting.

I am sick of sci-fi and fantasy.

I want to see an urban MMORPG, zombies, vampires, werewolfs... cities invested with zombies, some cities safe from infection, etc.

I neither play WoW nor eat fast food.

A step in the right direction, perhaps?

Wouldn't it be better with skills instead of careers?

Call it whatever you want...the syntax isn't the issue.

Honestly, that seems like a game my old Social studies teacher would create. And then make all the students play it in his class. If you dont reach level 20 by the end of the week, you fail. Exam questions regarding tactics of beating the Boss Gangster with specific tax code usables.

Well, with any luck there wouldn't be "levels".

And to add to the OP's idea I'd throw in a politician, but that may have already been covered when you said criminals.  : )

WTF where would allz teh elves be?

I want to think you meant the Proabition Era - like Elliot Ness / The Untouchables / Al Capone

Not the Abolition Era - like Abraham Lincoln / Fredrick Douglas / Underground Railroad

And the problem with the game would be human/player nature to gravitate towards where all the money is at.  The reason there were power gangs and gangsters was because of the money they made off of alcohol and the such.  Everyone would want to be a gangster making the money and not some poor member of the press or the community as a whole.

Federal Agent, heck yeah! It's the untouchables all over again! I'd be in in a heartbeat! would federal agents get a cop car for free (government paid) or would they have to pay for it as if they were buying their own car? Oooohhh I can see that. a group of say 4 agents in a car, 1 driving, the other 3 opening fire to a gangster car they're chasing down the street, the gangster's car opening fire on them as well, pedestrians running out of the way as they see these two vintage cars roaring through the street and side walks. I could also see sting operations, agents hiding, some are snippers hidden in buildings, others would do a lot of recon (hide and listen to plans without getting caught) it'd be nice! But I think these scenarios would be hindered if this was a level based game. I think it should be skilled based so that you can still be a particular profession (agent) but have your focus on other areas (as I mentioned, snipper, recon etc.)
