So, back in October, we wrote an article here on MMOCrunch.com about a new subscription tracking website, called VOIG. It's actually a really neat website that gives you all sorts of neat graphs, and numbers showcasing which MMOG has the better foothold in the overall (world) market.
Now, there is no way for us to be 100% certain that this information is accurate. We have taken a couple months, since reporting it last October, to review the website and make sure they don't update monthly with the same rehashed information. As far as we can tell, the website is on the level and is presenting as accurate information as they can. So, beginning now, each month we will be bringing you guys a new report starting with October 2007. Enjoy!
Top 5 Worldwide MMORPGs:
Notable games:
Interesting, interesting stuff. Apparently free games garner more subscriptions than pay2play games. Who knew? In any case, feel free to head on over to the website and sift through the data if you are interested. There is a lot to see and it is all very fascinating if you are into that sort of thing. Enjoy.
Check out the website HERE.

Have you been able to make a fairly informed guess as to the money pull for the non-WoW RMT/cash-shop games in that list (Knight Online and etc)? Because I have to see if these folks pay more per month for those games than they do for a subbed game like WoW and company.

VERY surprised to see Dofus with so many subscriptions. Good for Ankama, glad to see that they are still going strong (:
second life counts people who sign up but never log in, sucky programming, and player genorated content that makes performance even worse. if you did this for something like WoW you'd have considerably more than the 9-10 million who are actually playing, considering a great deal of people have bought the game the numbers would be like 50+ million people.
also of the people logged in 10-40% of the characters are actually bots used to generate traffic. range is so high because there a huge differance of people who log in at prime times, and other times.
second life is no next wave, it's just a unique sandbox where you can make anything you want due to extremely powerful scripting and building tools(powerful by game standards). with extremely gamed player counts.
I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.
I think you pasted that incorrectly :P
i have a second life account and only once used it so pretty rubbish to count them.
Also again the whole graph looks like a copy and paste of 2-3 years ago from sirbruce.
Sadly without inside information (which i believe sirbruce had early on and lost it -his last ever graph was rubbish) all this is pure speculation+old information+guesswork .
I would like to see this study a little more focused. Do we really care about The Matrix Online (0.03%) or... Dofus? Minions of Mirth? Furcadia? Gimme a break.
Second Life shouldn't even be considered a MMORPG. That's like an alternate universe where cults like Heaven's Gate are formed, isn't it?
Not directing this to you CCDeathCC, I know you didn't create the study.
Erm, what exactly is the problem having these games on the list? Is it causing you some kind of physical discomfort looking at the graph and seeing these games on there?
Is it necessary to carve out a piece in the pie chart for 0.03%? No, it's not.
I realize there are folks that play games like Toontown Online, Furtopia, Pirates of Puzzleland and so forth, but it would be nice if there were some charts that just lumped all of those games into one category. Maybe even create new charts combining games worldwide (like they have) but also break it apart by regions as well (Western, Euro, Asian)
For example, look at the very first chart, Absolute Contribution. That chart is useless because you can't distinguish all of the games from each other.
Oh come on, 2nd life is non subscription so anyone whoever registered for the game is included in the count. It kind of reminds me of a Leisure suit larry game circa the mid nineties, probably the worst MMO on the market right now. My guess is there is far less playing on that server than on the Eve server, hence their numbers are highly bogus.
Next time you try to put some numbers up ignore the non subscription games they do not have valid numbers.
at the bare min they(second life) have 10,000 real people on at any one time. so it's not small by any means.
I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.
The SWG subscription chart is certainly interesting. You can see exactly when the NGE hit...
Welcome to MMOGData!
Where am I?
Voig is a website dedicated to online gamers and the new home of MMOGData. If you’re looking for current subscription information or wondering just how many people play a specific MMOG, you’ve come to the right place.
So what’s this all about then?
Well lots of people have used the awesome www.mmogchart.com for information on the MMOG market which was created and maintained by SirBruce for many years, however since 2006 SirBruce has not updated the site.
I thought this was a great shame and I have tried to contact SirBruce many times over the last 2 months to see if I could take over the site and maintain the data, I emailed, put posts on forums, even phone calls and contacted other people within the industry but just could not get hold of SirBruce so I have decided to create a new site (http://www.mmogdata.com) and continue his work.
I cannot stress that I would much prefer SirBruce to get into touch and we work together on this and that I am using the data as at 20th May 2007 to form the basis of www.mmogdata.com

Well tbh i take this chart to be inaccurate .
Fact- mmorpg companies rarely give out the numbers.Only blizzard does because they are top of it and can boast.Pretty much like SoE could boast in 2001 with EQ.
Rest hide their numbers.Only one chart ever proved its accuracy that was sirbruce original chart because he broke news on 2 game numbers which later got confirmed. After that his own charts went totally inaccurate and even sirbruce posted here he "lost touch" and might be why he stopped publishing numbers not to feed inaccurate information.
Now here is a site which clearly lacks sirbruce old connections (aka inside information),clearly just supped up his last chart and clearly stats they used his last chart(as i suspected initally) which i can say was not one of his masterpieces.
Nah sorry but until we get someone with a more solid inside scoop like sirbruce once had ,all this charts are bleh
yeah i know as dofus and second life dont have real people playing like runesdcape too many user wtihout playing but WoW shows the best mmo for me
Hey Everyone
Ummm I think you'll find we Euro's like to think ourselves as Western as well. Although it would be good to split the Asian/Western markets, you'll probably find that the shares and splits are pretty similar between the US and Europe, and the numbers would be similar as well....
u can check in the website of mmodata and not only mmo there is all games u can check
Hey Everyone
I'm sorry, but this is yet another subs tracking website whose figures are mostly based on speculation and hearsay. Blizzard is the only company that is up-front about its numbers (and why not when you have 9 million people playing one title), other companies are very secretive about their figures and I'm certain only a handful of their employees know them.
The kicker is that this new site is basing its numbers on those from mmogchart.com, a site that whose methodology had gaping holes it it from the start.
The numbers look inaccurate, especially with some games only showing data for 1~2 markets; while others show all the markets they currently have servers.
I think the best method to get an estimate on f2p model games is by using the ACU, PCU method.
I do not know how accurate those numbers are, but It really surprised me that UO and EQ1 had more subs than DAoC. DAoC only showed 95k subs?
Maybe I read it wrong, but it shows how the game has tanked IMO.
i think so this is showed the register user not the online playing users so m ay DAoc will be more than EQ and UO but ultima is an old game like runescape
