PSU Problem

x_Kiba_xx_Kiba_x Member Posts: 89

Ok, well I bought a couple of upgrades for my computer recently like some RAM, a new power supply, and a better video card.  but when I went to hook up the power supply I found that it was too big for my computer case which is a SONY VAIO PCV-RS420 by the way meaning that the card is useless to me as of right now too because its needs at least a 400w to run smoothly.  If anyone would be willing to help me find  a equally powerful PSU which is about 480-500w that would be great but it needs to be quite a bit smaller than this model which I have to send back now.

thank you.

Buy a new case. Cases without power supplies are usually pretty cheap.

Problem with PC cases like the Sony VAIO is that they are set up for specific requirement, where as stock cases are suited for all sort of needs(If you buy an ATX/BTX tower). Unless you ofcourse buy a PC case for a specific use, like a HTPC, you need special components.

Sorry, but it's limited info you gave, so I have no answer.

On the PSU from the case you ripped, take a look at the labels and see if you can't come up with some info of which measurements it has, or what "standard" it is(ATX, BTX etc).

Well, Im not really into the whole idea of buying a case so the only option im really looking at right now is finding a smaller, more powerful PSU

Just as Orca says you should buy a new case with a psu and don't buy apevia psu they suck!! or try to mod your case to fit a bigger one? :o

Well if theres any hope in still buying one, the dimensions of my current PSU are

    L= 160mm   W= 100mm  H= 86MM

If anyone can find one very close to those specs that would be great.

and if I did buy a new case wouldnt it be very difficult for someone with my knowledge of computers which isnt too extensive to swap out my current case for the new one with all the components?

Good luck with that. Most likely you would have to custom order the power supply because it is proprietary hardware. If Dell still supports it, you'll have to order it through them. If they don't support it, you'll have to find a third party manufacturer who will make these custom power supplies, and you will pay through your nose for it.

If your comp is only a couple years old or less, dell should be able to upgrade the psu. They may require you to send it to them or take it to an approved shop though, I don't know if they would just ship you the part.

I use to have to order stuff from them or from vendors who specialized in making that crap when dell stopped supporting it, but that was because it was my job.

Or you could buy a new case.

my guess would be it's mashing against the back of the dvd/cd drive.

maybe if you move the dvd/cd drive down a couple of bays it'll fit ?

does anyone know a good buy on a computer case that looks good, not too vibrant that it stands out a whole lot but like a black and blue or green  one w/ a good size power supply included? maybe 500w+ but no more than 700 and in the price range of about 60-110?  Free shipping would also be nice if you can find it.

I was looking at this one but I it dosent have  apower supply and I might need to buy one seperate which will murder me on shipping-

Buy a coolermaster cm690. Awesome case, not too flashy, and cheap, put the powersupply you bought in it. If you already sent that psu back (which would suck,) I'd suggest ordering an antec, corsair or ocz psu.

If you have a compusa near you, they carried this case and actually sold it pretty cheap. Pick it up there and save yourself some shipping and handling.

thanks dae that looks like a pretty good one, I was thinking maybe a little more flashy then that, I like the cases that have the blue neon lights in them, I just dont want one that has a huge bright yellow face plate, you know?  Thanks though thats looks like a good case at a good price

Dollar for dollar its one of the best cases out right now. The antec 900 isn't bad either, but it will most likely cost you over $100.

I recently bought an apevia something or the other for like $40. It's ok, but it's not really a very good case. It does have a side panel and glowy blue lights. I just bought it as a place holder until I build my new comp though, my old case self destructed from too many moving truck journeys.

I'll probably build with the cm 690 though, I haven't really seen many cases I like better. If I decide I want a window, I'll just mod it and put one in. A Dremel is your friend!!

p.s. Some people like the smilodon also, but its a little gaudy for me.

Actually, that might be a better fit for you. The backside of the case lays flat to make it easier to work on the motherboard, it has a window and glowy lights, also comes with a powersupply(though the only power supply that comes with a case that I would recommend using is Antec.)
