Best MMO'S for the over 30 crowd?

ttomm46ttomm46 Member UncommonPosts: 446

Hi

I'm way over 30 so i wonder which MMO has a mature player base and some depth...I bought WOW and so far I don't see the fun and from the Intelligent chat from the player base.."Noob.."  Dumbass "and other brilliant comments I have a feeling my time there is limited....

Forget AOC for now..my computer is only  mediochre right now......

Makes me miss some old gems like Meridian 59 and Underlight..

thanks for suggestions in advance..

Best bet is probably ultima online since the game is rather older so less chance of those "lulz, noob!" children, eh. :)

If you're into the lore, and don't mind linear gameplay, LoTRO has a pretty mature community from what I've found, especially on the Landroval server.

Of course, the game is fairly demanding from a hardware point of view.  Try the demo and see what you think.  I've been playing since July and I'm starting to get bored with it, but every once in a while I'm impressed by a new environment that I discover.

EQ is your best bet, still quite alot of people playing and very mature. Guilds still activly recruit and are very helpful. Give the Tunare server a try, Aegis wolves allways looking to help new and old players back into the best mmo out there. Lots of quests, easy on the computer. Most everyone in our guild is an adult but even the younger players are not the 1337 typing bad mouth punks form WoW

I'll second LOTRO. Also, have you considered EVE?

World War II Online - Battleground Europe

Not the best graphics but always mature gameplay and nice players.

Check out Everquest 2 , Lotro and  Eve.

And if your system is really low end, Everquest 1.

Vanguard also has a mature community, but it needs a high end system to run properly.

Whatever game you go to, you might want to try the Roleplaying servers, if you don't hate roleplaying that is...

FWIW, Landroval is the "unofficial" roleplaying server in LoTRO, and while there are a fair number of roleplayers, they are not all that noticeable.  So, if you want to roleplay, there's a community there to do it with.  On the other hand, if you find RP annoying or a little scary, you still have a mature respectful community, and it's not like you'll even know the RP is going on.

I would say LOTRO , because it is populated by mature community and it is casual.

As 30+ year old , i do know that we do not have as much time for MMOs as those of younger generations.

EVE can be casual aswell , but you will acomplish nothing at all - so why play it than ?

The average age of players in Eve-Online is 27.
Most have a job and family. You would fit in perfectly.

I've been playing Everquest 2 for a long time now, and from what I've seen, the general server population consists of married couples. The guild that I'm in right now is led by a married couple. I don't think that in all my years of playing Everquest 2, that I have come across ANYONE who has called me a "noob", or anything "degrading". So if you really want a game with an older generation, I suggest Everquest 2. The fighting style isn't me, but you may like it ^^.

    Thanks all...

The only reason I haven't tried..LOTR a friend has it and there is some video hitching when moving..all sound good though

    Hay Tom:

Good to know that there are others around who are older than dirt and dont think that graphical  MUDS began with UO. (Although these days the kiddies think history began with WOW.)

First thing...if you dont walk around with a skateboard permanently attached to your hip, and if your first instinct to someone referring to you as DUDE is to slap them senseless....RUN, do not walk, away from WOW. It is a well done game as far as the current spate of dumbed down RPGs goes, but the "community "will drive any person past 30 batty.

I have to second what several responders to you have already suggested. If you want the pretty graphics, easy casual leveling, well done quests that leave you with a feeling of immersion (in other words, the best of what WOW is), but with a community that has gottn past that difficult adolescent period, try LotRO. Beautifully done game.

But if you want a game that is truly different, one that challenges the intellect and requires you to make your own fun rather than being spoonfed to a maxed character...for heavens sake, give EVE a try.  Eve isnt for everyone..and may or may not be what you are looking for in entertainment, regardless of your state of maturity or social adaptation (although most skateboarders turn right around at the tutorial door)..but dont miss at least allowing yourself to be exposed to a game which truly stands apart in the genre.

And the good thing with the current state of the MMORPG market is that it is so competitive that you can try almost any game now for free. Best of luck to you in finding a new rpg home...wherever that might be.

Second Life or Entropia Universe would be your best bet. They both have real life economies allowing for you to put cash into the game, or exchange game currency for real life money... Neither of them are hack and slash so constant killing and picking up loot wont be present...

I prefer Entropia...its way more polished, but Second Life is seriously a world in your pc.

Eve and LotRO are good choices too T_T

    :D good luck

In the land of Predators, the lion does not fear the jackals...

This is very true - I started in EQ2 and then went to WoW. I did that because, in my opinion, WoW was superior to EQ2 in terms of content, landscape, design and 'look and feel'. However, with regard to community, EQ2 is decisively better than WoW - I never met a less helpful, more aggressive, dishonest, rude set of players in my life - and I have tried four seperate servers over a period of two years. Apparently, WoW gets a lot better if you can get into a good guild. However, so many guilds start and fail in WoW that you tend to have to experience four or five of them before you can find one not peopled by bullies, thieves and cretins. Just my experience.

Eve, too, has a helpful, mature crowd of players it seems though I have not played the game long enough to know much about them.

EVE is all that is out there for the mature thoughtful player. LoTRO is full of crap intro and secondary players, most other games are bogged down or not being actively produced. My two cents.

I think every game has a mature player base if you look for it.

I know guild wars has, and even WoW has. And they're probably the easiest to find a mature player base, just because of the amount of people that play these games. Yes, WoW and popular games have tons of kids playing too, but the more people play the higher your chance is to meet the people you like to hang out with.

It does take a bit, but I wouldn't go to UO or EQ. Yes they have some mature players, but they're also dead games.

You'll always have kids in games, I really don't mind that, it's fun to talk to different ages of people, I like talking to any age really. And if little kids or leet speak bother you, it's easy to ignore them if you're on a crowded server, and just talk to people you like.

Oh, and second life, although I haven't played it yet, but friend has, seems to have a mature player base and is pretty crowded.

i've heard everywhere that lotro has quite well-mannered folks around there, you should try it out ... im not sure about the content in the game though, many complain that theres not so much to do in there other than just monster play, quests, deeds and overall leveling.

and you mentioned that you dont have high-end machinery at your grasp right now.. lotro is very beautiful game, and because of that it requires good computer to run it nice and clean, unfortunately

At 39 my favorite MMO ever is EQ.  That game takes a lot of time though, and you would have a tough time without knowing someone.

My wife is 35, works full time, and likes EQ2. She spends quite a bit of time on that, and raids some. The rest of the time she will solo content/trades  or grp a little as her hrs at work vary.

Asking Devs to make AAA sandbox titles is like trying to get fine dining on a McDonalds dollar menu budget.

At 50+ here, I currently play EVE and Tabula Rasa and have yet to be called anything derogatory.

I have played Planetside, SWG, EQ, EQII and some others that are no longer with us. I quit the EQ franchise only because of a personal dispute with SOE, the game is great but it has been a while since I have played but, for the most part the community has been mature and helpful but, sometimes it just depends on the server as to what type of individuals you will encounter.  I would shy away from Planetside mainly because they can get overly serious in play and if your system is a little slow, you may end up on the wrong side of your empires gun...lol They like to Tk alot at least when I was playing back then.

I agree with the rest of the posters, try the free trials and get a feel for the games and player base.

    Best of luck out there.

    *Over 40 input here*

I concur with pretty much every reply in this thread. I'll even add my 2 creds worth and say LotR and EQ2 have great player bases, especially on RP servers. However, both are a bit of hardware hogs, but both can be scaled down considerably to work with older machines. As others have mentioned, try out the trials and see what you think.

I haven't tried Vanguard (no free trial), so I don't have an opinion on it. Eve is an acquired taste and not for everyone (I still don't like it).

I make spreadsheets at work - I don't want to make them for the games I play.

There was a time when SWG was a tad complex/complicated for the wee-folk.  That time has come and gone however.  Since then I have jumped around quite a bit.  If I were to recommend some games to a friend they would be as follows. (Not in any particular order)

    1. EQ2....possible the best MMO on the market in my opinion. (Still play occasionally)

    2. LotRO....Fantastic graphics and very polished game (I only lasted a couple months not much depth)

    3.  Vanguard....Don't let the haters blow smoke up your arse, It has come a long way (Still play it)

    4.  Eve....very nice game if you like flying around in a ship all time (Nice game, just not my thing)

    5.  PotBS....Big change of pace for the genera, a little(scratch that), a lot rough around the edges (Pre-orders start in 7 days)

All of the above have seemed to keep the kiddies out for what ever reason.  PotBS is a tough recommendation as I feel the game still needs work.  It just happens to be the one I'm currently enjoying  and don't see it appealing to kiddies.

Might even be easier to state ones to stay away from.

    1.  WoW....guess you know that already (in case someone missed it)

    2.  SWG....Sigh, I don't even want to talk about it.

    3.  Guild Wars....kids, kids, kids

    4.  Anything that is F2P.....kids, kids and more kids

I would love to see Warhammer and Age of Conan make it to the first list later this year but unfortunately feel it is going to be quite the opposite.  These are my opinions based on my experience...do with them what you will.

Honestly i'd have to say Dark Age of Camelot would be your best choice just because the mere fact that  most the kiddies left due to wow and other games and is now probably a over 17 crowd. But if your into a more intellectual game then Dark age of Camelot also takes the cake Just about everything you can possibly have greatly weighs in if your going to be good or not in RVR and in some cases PVE. Very well thought out game

Doesn't matter, though I would suggest staying away from f2p types.  I find all levels  of maturity  on these games  and  that doesn't really lock up with age. Some younger players come across  as very mature and the opposite holds true also. Go for the fun, gamers are ageless.  Besides, it's fun "pwning the kids "  and then they find  out an old man did them in.

     55 was a good year , we're classics.
