Ok I'm downloading the 14 day trial. Any recommendations for a server to try? (Sounds like a classic server is the way to go.) How about class suggestions? I tend to lean toward ranged damage dealers lately, physical or casters, and something that I can comfortably solo with would be ideal. Thanks for comments.

Try the cooperative server. You can play any and all of the realms and characters can move between the realms (there's no pvp except dueling). This allows you to switch gear and money between characters (with the help of another player, so you're not always starting from scratch as you experiment with classes.
The classic server is currently the most popular, but keep in mind that it does not use the Trials of Atlantis expansion. If you're into the pvp, the classic servers are probably the best, population wise. If you're not really interested in pvp, I'd suggest a regular server or the cooperative server so you can enjoy all the content.
Thanks, Cillasi. I actually really like pvp, so classic may be the best fit.
My suggestion: Classic, Hibernia, Vampyre. Very easy starting class. Can solo very well, and is a terror on the battlegrounds. Not so much of a terror in end game RvR (some say other classes merely catch up, some say Vamps suck wieners at RvR..take your pick). Once you get your feet wet and learn the game, move on to whatever class you like.
I don't want to write this, and you don't want to read it. But now it's too late for both of us.
Another reason to play a Vamp is they are great farming characters, so you can quickly earn gold for your main PVP characters. You can get a Vamp to 50 in no time at all, and then start on your ranged caster.
If you'd prefer to solo up a caster as your first character, consider making a Theurigist on Albion side. Great soloers, valuable in groups, terrors in PVP.

When it comes to ranged damage, just about any of the casters will do as well as your archers. All the casters have a decent ranged nuke with 1 caster in every realm having bolt spells which have the longest range damage dealing spell. The bonus is you get 2 of them so you can cast 2 bolts before they get in range of your normal nukes and then just blow them out of the water. If that doesn't work or if they surprise you you just root/stun/mezz them depending on the caster you picked and then back up a bit and cast your damage spells.
A while back they did an archery patch which simplified the archer class and gave them tons of new things to play with so you can give that a try too.
No required quests! And if I decide I want to be an assassin-cartographer-dancer-pastry chef who lives only to stalk and kill interior decorators, then that's who I want to be, even if it takes me four years to max all the skills and everyone else thinks I'm freaking nuts. -Madimorga-
If you can, start out as a 50th level something. At least you might get a group.
This would have been easier, just give him a list of the fastest leveling classes in the game.
Best Farming Character/Powerleveler in game.
Albion Necromancer
Hands down - don't try to argue or flame because for those who have them know I am right, for those that don't need not argue because you do not know what your talking about.
There are 3 classes that excel at solo leveling that I have taken to 50 in under 7 days each.
Hibernian Vampiir
Albion Heretic
Albion Necromancer
There are other classes that excel in solo play, however these would be the fastest because all three of them have an almost constant pull rate with little to no downtime. The heretic has some but is easily displaced with some of the RA's like MCL and Focus/Concentration.
If your a big PvPer like you stated tho, You might really want to look into a stealther class.
Nightshade/Ranger
Infiltraitor/Scout
Shadowblade/Hunter
Harder to level, and harder to play. However they have the highest survivability and the highest kill rates of most of the RvR and Battleground players.
I play them all scattered across many servers, I do not play on any classic servers however because as far as I can tell, It doesn't do anything except remove the ToA content. Which I never really understood why so many people complained about ToA, I mean I can see the problem now where you can't really get alot of people for the ToA raids. So they fixed that by letting you buy them with Bounty Points. People acted like ToA was the anti-christ or something.... ToA expanded your character and made you a more powerful player... for those who didn't have arti's or ML's they cried because arti/ML user would destroy them in combat... my solution would have been stop crying and go get what they have. I guess the majority of DAoC users just found it to hard or something as they have all since left the game or joined classic server were they all feel "even"...
*shrugs* whatever floats thier skiff I guess.
I don't know about you, but "even" or "average" never really appealed to me.
Who ever said "I am perfectly content on just being average sitting on my couch being a nobody."
It was prolly Homer Simpson or something. LOL
anyway I am out... going to grab some popcorn to watch the %^&* storm about to go off.
If you want best of both worlds scout is hands down one of the best solo rvr and levelling class. Not as fast as necro but necros totally suck in rvr. Vamps are fast levellers but god so boring.
bone dancers are incredibly easy to level also amd can solo rvr ok however everyone including your own realm will hate you as theyre a very exploitive 2 button pressing class.
Heretics also quite fast to level as caster specced however as said u will have some downtime.
I personally liked the eye candy of the wizard blowing stuff up when i first started.
Sadly stealther assassins are a pain in the arse to level without buffs although rewarding to play in rvr.
Greatness is difficult to appreciate from close up. The great mountain on the horizon is only the ground when you are standing on it.
Wasn't the original issue and all the fallout over what TOA was and required at release? I was under the impression it introduced EQ-like pve raiding that was required if you wanted to remain competetive in pvp. Many resented being forced into a raiding grind to be able to continue doing what they most enjoyed about DAoC and what in fact distinguished it far and away from other games at the time.
Correct me if I am wrong but I always understood the TOA debacle to center on required raiding to just play the game whereas this was not required before the expansion. The game became considerably more hard core in terms of time, and large group coordinated raids did it not? Else you were screwed in rvr and might as well quit which in fact many did.
They changed the game in a big way and people did not like that change. That is what TOA hate is about and frankly as someone with a real life outside gaming I don't blame them.
It's sad that in the wake of that terrible design decision you are left today with classic servers vs full content servers and fixes that were too little too late. That is what you really wound up with unfortunately. Witness the latest merger because like the old game I loved (EQ), DAoC too is slowly bleeding to death.
I hope that Warhammer is a worthy successor to DAoC unlike the wow-ish EQ II we wound up with. Maybe I'll play that one. I am tempted to play this for what its worth till then and on classic not because I need a watered down game personally but because I'd rather be wherever the most players are and the pvp is still most active. I also believe buff bots suck and that would influence my decision. I do not care how anyone else might justify them as it would not fly for me. I don't like that. Just as I don't like all the boxing in EQ where it devolved into a peculiar isolationist thing where a sad number of players prefered a me, me, me experience vs a shared fun time.
I'm actually here poking around in various forums gauging user feedback on the games they play trying to decide what the heck to play as I have become pretty thoroughly disillusioned with SOE and all things managed/produced by them. Can you imagine Mythic sticking a card game into your RPG? How about battery powered armor? We got that and more in EQ and it sucks. RMT and microtransactions are next but I don't plan to be around for that.
He who hesitates is lost.
Well basically it all boils down to this.
The problems of the TOA in the past are no longer an issue. Raiding is no longer required for anything, not artifact, armor, or even master levels, they can all be bought with the bounty points from pvp. So that solves that.
So what we have now is MUCHO players, playing on classic where all they have to look forward to is a spell crafted template that is exactly like everyone else. 1 allows buff bots, and 1 does not.
Anyone who wants to cut out, All the extra zones content in TOA, (which are fun to play in since you no longer have to raid. Anyone who wants to cut out countless cool abilities, weapons and armors.... all for the sake of a buff bot, that's cool. It's your sub fee not mine.
But I fight players all the time using buff bots, 9 times out of 10 if your in a BG in a normal cluster your opponent is buffed with a bot. If you kill them which happens A LOT then what is the big deal.
Buffs do not make people invincible. If you take the time to get the right armor and weapons you will have nice boosted stats as well. So it doesn't really matter. Plus anyone will buff you in the normal servers all you have to do is ask. They are usually very nice about handing out the buffs if they have the con to do so.
:-)
Not really.
I don't want to raid, nor PvP.

I also wait for Warhammer, But DAoC is still a mighty fine game, and very fun for those who play it for what it is.
And listen dont be afraid of the normal servers anymore, you wanna play DAoC send me a PM and Ill get you setup with me on vent, If you dont mind playing alb, Ill PL if you need it, equip you, and get your some funds for whatever you need so you can start enjoying the game.
I play normal server, but normal servers are very fun now, just sucks we lose all our peeps to the classic servers due to the TOA of the past.

Well if you do not want to raid thats cool who does really. If you dont wanna PvP I would ask you why the hell you even play DAoC as that is what this game was really designed for, but hey I guess they have the co-op servers for people like you. Which is cool to, I mean there are a lot of diff. types of players.
For people like you Normal servers are prolly not your best bet. Classic server I would think isn't either as end game classic is all for the rvr.
I know there are alot of non pvp players in DAoC but I know where they all are to. Co-OP server. PvP players play Mordred or Normal servers and the mixed bunch play classic.

They don't have a coop-server, they have a raiding server.
Is it so hard to understand that I enjoy PvE-grouping? And they are redoing the same stuff for WAR, cutting themselves of millions of possible customers. It is not like it would be hard to please PvE-groupers. We are simple players, and we like simple stuff.

DAoC does have a Co-OP server, Its is a server designed for carebear no pvp players who only want to fight mobs.
Gaheris is the Co-op server. All three realms can play together, you can anywhere in the entire world and do anything, they just have NO PVP of any kind except duels.
I am not knocking you, I don't mock players for having a different play style than me. If you don't like to raid, that is fine with me. If you don't like to PVP that is fine to. Just games like DAoC are designed for PvP centric players. It's entire principle is on RvR combat with other players. So to not want to do any kind of PvP kinda defeats the purpose of playing DAoC. That is just my personal opinion tho.
WOW, first time I've seen someone self-slam themselves. Nice job. Almost should be a quote in a signature or something.
WAR is not about PVE (though it will have some). So many other games are, but they do tend to all wind up with a raiding end game, as there really are two choices at the end. Player control of territory/PVP and Raiding.
So far no developer seems interested in making never ending small group content, except perhaps Turbine with LotRO.

I really wasn't trying to knock him. I know from his previous post that he is having a hard time finding what he likes as EQ went to Raid focus and CoX nerfed his Brute.
I hope he really finds it in DAoC, If he had joined the Devon cluster I would even group play with him every night. My wife, and brother and I group every night to go do something in the world he could have came along. :-)
Thanks for the nice words. I am like a burnt cat.
EQ burnts me in the past. DAoC burnt me (pre-Gaheris, but Gaheris sounds like EQ, all about raiding). WoW burnt me (WoW is an EQ tutorial...)
WAR is scaring me, I would prolly just avoid it. AoC is scaring me. EvE is scaring me and I wouldn't even give it a chance.
I may return to CoV, kinda like the beaten wife syndrom, since there are no alternatives for now, I could always play a Tanker until they nerf me again... (Looking for Stargate and BioWare MMO...but I know to not expect much before it hit the shelves).
