$15/mo is too high for this title. Others offer considerably more for less or the same. $10/mo would have been more appropriate. Then again, most people willing to pay the $10 are likely to also be willing to pay the $15. So financially perhaps it makes sense.
They are obviously counting on the uniqueness of the genre to attract an initial influx of accounts. They are also lucky to be launching into a fairly dead MMO market right now, with only Tabula Rasa being a reasonable recent launch, and Conan & War months away.
I think they will do well for 2-3 months, but then the high fee & relative lack of content will lead to mass cancellations. Especially if Conan ships by then and doesn't suck, as many will go have a look at that title next.

Uh? lots of bad things can be said about PotBS but korean grindfest??? Takes around 2-3 weeks to get to max level if you are dedicated, that's not a grind that's a breeze.

I was acctually pretty intrested in this game, however, any game that has a monthly subscriptionfee should be ignored.
You're on the wrong board then. Pretty much every MMORPG game has a fee unless they are old and tired or shitty and then let you play them for free with some sort of catches.
I dont mind if it has like a one time cost like Guild Wars etc, but an expensive monthly subscriptionfee is overkill. =/
Although I did not like PotBS I have to laugh at your statement about expensive monthly fees.
Your either a kid who has to ask his/her parents for the money for the game and then a monthly fee or a cheapskate.
Do you realize that a two hour movie will cost you 8.00 for one person (lets say you take a girlfriend, assuming your a guy) so that is 16.00 for ONE 2 hour movie.
14.99 a month for any mmo comes out to about 50 cents a day for pretty much 24/7 access to the servers (yes I know they are down from time to time for maintenance and updates)
MMO's pricing is by far the best bang for your buck entertainment around.
Ehm... Ever heard of the phrase "Poor student"?...
Anyhow, the best "bang for your buck", is nothing else but a nice piece of liqour/random-selfmixed-cocktail. The thing is, sometimes you cant even afford that.

Not gonna attack you personally but make a general statement to your question.
Poor students should NOT be spending money on games but rather their education. I never played a MMO while I was in college because the money went for rent, food, utilities and other necessities. Games and liquor are extras that are not needed.
Now that I am out of school, married, have kids and a career I play MMO's as a stress reliever and very casually at that.
Maybe after the bills and expenses are paid a student might just have an extra $15 for a computer game? Nothing wrong with that just because you didn't do it.

And I wouldn't have said anything had he not said that 15.00 a month was excessive to charge a month for an online game and then to go further to add that he was a poor college student.
Please read all relevant posts before replying next time and you will see what I said makes sense. If it is not in your means to pay 15.00 a month for an online game then don' t play the game. What some of these people don't realize is that there is a full time development staff that has to be paid each month, servers to maintain, bandwidth is not free and other teams to keep the game going. How could they justify letting you play free.
Maybe some of these students should take economics and business in college and learn why MMO's have to charge a monthly fee to stay afloat and make profits.

Liqour is. =P
Just kidding.
That depends on where you live, where I live as an example, education among other stuff is subsided, but yes, food, necessities and so on should be prioritized higher than MMO's.
Collegetime needs stress relivers as well though.
However, if it would be a one-time only fee (im speaking in general now, not just this particular game), one can save some of his income every month to get the game or something.
And if you feel like you want to quit playing the game, you dont haveto feel like all youve done was for nothing. =/
Being a poor college student doesn't mean he has no money to spend like you keep assuming. It most likely means it is a significant portion of his expendable income. Big difference.
I just think it all comes down to this... The guy that started saying if you cant afford $15 a month dont play,[sorry didnt get your name] and is trying to compensate the fact that employees fo he game need to get paid. Lets think about this for a sec here, Even at $10 a month, considering the backing that the game has would pull in enough to pay and keep the servers afloat. People in this world need to stop being so greedy, and that is exactly what some of these game devs are, GREEDY. What ever happened to the 7.99 9.99 consistant monthly fees every game used to charge, then you got blizzard coming in and starting to raise the price. Im not cheap and im sure other people that complain about this are not cheap either, but, at the same time price at $15 is not reasonable in my opinion, expecually at a game like POTBS... Again my opinion. The thing is like someoen said, those that most likely want to play the game that would pay $10 a month, would also pay $15, but they dont stop to think how many possibly breezy by players they might get if it was just $5 cheaper, and then some of those players would even stay. Having a bigger community appeals to outside players, WoW is a good example of it, many people i know lately since there is nothing at all to play, have gone to WoW, not because it looks good or anything, but when you ask them its because there are so many people that play it, it must be fun.
Ive taken economics and ive also taken psychology, so looking at both sides of the picture in most cases could turn out to be a better thing. And also, please do not think that becuase of having a degree makes one person any smarter then the other, I didnt need to go to school about this stuff, as i had already known how it works. I just needed that damn peice of paper after you graduate for companys to even look at the damn resume.
What ever happened to the 7.99 9.99 consistant monthly fees every game used to charge, then you got blizzard coming in and starting to raise the price.
Sony was charging 14.95 long before blizzard launched WoW. I'm not sure who raised the bar to 14.95, but I think it was SWG.

Sorry for straying.
Yes SWG was the first to take it up to 15 a month.
Why do people always assume though when someone says they wont pay the 15 a month for a game that the person making the statement is some hobo trying to snake wireless from a Starbucks to play his online games. Please I spend more in a single day on cigarettes than what any mmo charges, it's about being WORTH what you are asking.
I personally don't pay more a month for a modern mmo that can't even supply me with a 1/4 of the depth/complexity/content that games like UO, AC, AO all gave me at their releases but at a $10 a month price tag. Simple really. Get back to making real online worlds again and not generic brain dead quest grinders that belong on a Nintendo and I'll happily give you $20 a month for the game.
The rise of subscriptions can be placed with SOE when first increasing the rates of EQ by one or two dollars (I forget exactly). When the price increased occurred there was little loss of current players, so from that, the belief is that people (in general) are willing to accept rate increases or most cost per month, as now $15/mo is becoming standard.
Now with having $15/mo for PotBS, the title is going to be compared to other titles that charge the same rate. Personally I think it is better to start out with a below average rate (but not too low or the perception of a "cheap game" comes to mind), and grow a community. Once there is sufficient demand, then raise the rates; an example would be Eve-Online. Though I would say a fix rate should be applied to provide as a bonus to loyal customers. A $10/mo rate I think would end up to undercut the competitors, and gain more people.
But, that's not going to happen, just like a decrease in rates over time (has any title ever reduced its monthly rates? (other than going straight to free-to-play)). With SOE supporting billing, the number of people taking the yearly subscription method is going to be low as SOE doe not provide refunds. Pay for a year, but no longer like the game or due to some issue after a couple of months (or a major change of the title) and cancel, well the rest of the months cannot be refunded.
And that is why...

They believe that happiness is an activity -- it is inseparable from the pursuit of happiness.
Lord of the Rings has tried a few new twists to billing with the life time fee, the founders fee and even extending founders pricing if you purchase a 3 month block for the game.
As for starting low and raising the price that also opens the door to current customers asking what they get in return for the extra new subscription price. I remember when SOE raised EQ from 9.89 to 12.95 and the reason given was internet costs (I might be a bit off).
What I had only mention in brief, was that those customers who first come on at, say $9.89 will enjoy the $9.89 rate even if the rate goes up to $12.95. That is to help retain customers and provide a reward for loyalty. There are some minor items that would need to be figured out, such as selling/trading of accounts, but that can be worked out.

After all, that's what all this game is.
Including a fee.

15.00 per month is a fair price, a pittance really, and if I wanted to play a Pirate game I gladly would,
I just can't get into Pirates
