Just curious. How big is it to FFXI, WoW and L2? Also is the world "open" when you go from zone to zone like wow or is there a loading screen like FFXI?
I can't say much about L2 or FFXI, never played 'em. Norrath v2.0 is certainly bigger than Azeroth though. EQ2 tends toward a smaller number of huge zones rather than smaller and more numerous. There are loading screens between each.
it is really hard to assess how much area there is in eq2. Since there are a very large number of zones/instances it might be deceptive overall... Some of the main overland zones are easily as big as any zone in wow. I'd say a zone like antonica is maybe 2 times as big as a zone in wow. And some of the newer zones are even larger then that.
Lets face it... EQ2 is just big...but not as easy to navigate as EQ was, or WOW is.
Hehe, can someone help the OP in how you download EQ2Maps ? ^^ Makes navigating much easier

The original zones are much smaller than the new ones but the total area of the game is just huge. Especially the newer zones. In fact, its too big.
People complained so much about the loading screens that the dev team tried something new with this expansion. They made the zones absolutely gigantic so that you hardly zone at all in Kunark. The problem is that this simply served to increase the lag as there's so many people playing in such a gigantic area full of animations.
EQ2 wasn't meant to have no loading screens. Its one of the very few things I dislike about the new expansion. Those things include Gorowyn is just nasty to try to find your way around in with those stupid annoying "pully carts". I have yet to find out where I can get the "zone to home" button (you get it automatically in the old zones, and by doing quests for the queen in EoF), and the armor you get as quest rewards in Kunark far outstrips anything you'll find from players on the broker.
Other than that, this is the best expansion yet with involving quests, beautiful scenery, an fast progression through levels 1-20.
Not sure exactly why Kunark is an evil expansion because, if you read what the NPC's say, they aren't evil, just self interested.

When I made a new char in Gorowyn, I got the 'Call to home' spell automatically from the start. It was in 'general ability tab', where you also have 'Sprint' and Harvesting abilities.
Try check if you have it there.I hope you find it, it's annoying not to have
EQ2 is smaller than the average mmo in land-size, BUT due to slower travel, and larger zone breakdown, it seems bigger than it is. That is something I think this game does without too much drawbacks, and is a generally good idea, considering it is so old, that mmo's just were smaller back then.
That being said, I must re-itterate that the overall landsize is smaller, and they just make you feel like you are in a big world by putting things close together, but making you move slower.

Smitty, I've played WoW, Eve, DAoC, City of Heroes, Anarchy, LOTRO, DDO, EQ, EQ2, PoTC, (since it will be released in only a few days and I'm not hurting anything by saying it.) PoTBS, and SWG, and what you are saying is crap. EQ2 is NOT a very small amount of land. The others are at least equal to with the exception of SWG which is larger than pretty much everywhere since it contains whole planets full of repeated graphics with very little distinction from each other.
I went from LOTRO to Everquest, neither me our my son could get into everquest because of the small enclosed zones. We gave up at lvl 20. By the time i reached 20 in LOTRO I had been to so many unique large area that all seamlessly connected. In the end we went back to LOTRO, EQ2 is old and outdated when it comes to LVL design. I dont care about expansions and stuff, the game should be great the first 20 lvls, EQ2 was not..
Exactly, you spend lvls 1-20 in one zone, that is why i hated the game. In LOTRO I was in all types of different areas throughout the world. But what do you expect from a game as old as EQ2. To the poster if your looking to play this game, try LOTRO or wait for CONAN. Your asking the question in an EQ2 forum, of course people are going to say it's amazing, It's not, it's old.
I think SWG, eve, Lotro, PotBS, MXO, GW (counting expansions) All have larger zones by land area than EQ2. I was suspicious of their "smoke and mirrors" size enhancement when I played so I looked it up, and was backed up by tentonhammer which listed games by land-size. EQ2 was not on it, but if you think about it, players aren't as mobile on that game. Same with WOW, the game is genuinely a smaller landmass, but they make travel slower so you notice the 5 minute auto-fly, not the fact that people are keeping up on the ground.
Not saying it as a dis, it's just that players can cover more ground on COX with teleport or swift travel in Lotro, not to mention any space-based game, where people hyper-speed around.
To really see the size of eq2 is kinda hard and it is confusing to the new person. The zones do tend to be very large and there are many of them. To get a better feel for the size check out
You can see how many different areas there are. I've recently been playing a new character having returned after playing many other games. I've been to many different zones. Right now I'm almost 30 and I've been playing in Nektos forest, thundering steps, and butcherblock. Each one of these places is very large and full of things to do and see.
Before that I could have done antonica, greater feydark, commonlands, darklight wood, and now timorous deep.
Also unlike most other games getting around is pretty easy once you figure it out. In an hour I can easily have been in all 3 of the zones I listed above doing quests. With the many portals/carpets/boats it is pretty easy to get anywhere in a pretty short time which really makes meeting up with other people pretty easy.

With all due respect, you're talking absolute rubbish. If as you say you were playing EQ2 vanilla you would pretty much be forced to visit about 5 adventure zones (the newbie island, several suburban zones and maybe Ant/CL) and 5 or 6 city zones in between 1 and 20. Ironically for the expansions you would visit 1 (or maybe 2) zones between this level range but as previous posters have said this is more to do with game architecture. There is plenty of variety in these zones . I too have played LOTRO and found that in EQ2 the starting zones were much more varied. I'm not sure what game you're referring to, but its a point of fact that its not EQ2.
