I've been playing since November and I have to say, this is the most unique game I've played so far and I've played 20-25 MMO's.
What makes the game fun for me.
#1 the players, they make a majority of the content. Pirates trying to steal items from your ship, or kidnap and ransom you. Fleet trying to rescue you, interstellar wars, complete freedom in your actions with consequences. If your a pirate and fleet catches you, they will put you in jail for awhile and then you try to escape.
Complete freedom, do whatever the hell you want to do, build colonies, join a crew of a civ ship, be a pirate, join the Confederates and do whatever it is they do, join fleet and see the stars.
So what makes this game fun for you?

what do i like about the game well i have been playing for about half a year and i still haven't done much of what there is to do there is so much opprtunites are truly limetless and i have done new things everyday in the starfleet path alone there are always an opening for doctors, gunners, engineers, pilots,
and you are not restricted by any thing except your avatars skills in the field you chose better yet grinding is simi-detrimental to your avatar
also the shear size of the universe even if all the players worked together for a month solid only a fraction of the star systems will be charted
well that is what i like about the game that has not been said before
I've been playing SQO since like November 06 or something, and I just can't stop for very long. I've played alot of games, I large boxes filled with MMO's I don't play anymore. But when I found SQO it went over my expectations at the time of what a game could really achieve.
First, I'll start with the basic reason. Castlethorn makes promises, and does their best to follow through with them. In doing so this game has continued to evolve over time, though it has been a bit of a bumpy ride along the way at times. Any game company that is willing to listen to the community, that is in touch with their players and attempts to put fourth their ideas is worth their weight in gold.
Second, the fact that this game has pretty much unlimited career paths for someone. I myself went from Starfleet Rear Admiral to nearly winning the Presidential election of 2224, to forming the Colonial Militia and conducting a black ops rescue of a group of miners being held by the Klinshayan Empire. I'm now back in Starfleet, in the 7th fleet as their commander. And it is now one of the largest fleets in the game. I can do anything I want in the game, even make my own stuff up to do.
Third, the fact that I can walk around in the ship and get into personal combat and not just ship combat makes this game have alot more options in terms of battle. There have been many ideas thrown around about how to use shuttles as drop ships for soldiers to land into ships or planets for assaults, once the shuttles have been completed.
There is also an aura of mystery about new discoveries in the game that really capture people's imaginations. We have encountered a new race recently which looks to have an aquatic type of vessel, and now many people are speculating as to their intentions and origins. I have my own theory as well. It is things like this that get people thinking, rather than mindlessly smashing a button.
