I started this thread for players to post some of their in game experiences on so non-players can get an idea of what goes on in the game. I'll go first....
Damn, damn, damn. I'm out of bar shot and cannister ammo, running down to another port to pick some up, when a bloody pirate engages me. Serves me right for not looking around and sailing comotose....
Okay, we enter the combat instance, at least I have the wind to my back. Of course, that means he'll just sit there like a spinning top and blow the snot outta me as I appraoch. Being short on ammo, I think I need a plan. Luckily for me having the wind initiative gives me time to concoct one....
Okay, here's my brilliant plan, I will use up my bar shot on his sails, swing around his stern, target his rudder, then sit in his blind spot and blow the snot outta him as he tries to get away. I swing into him, and sure enough, he lets loose a broadside at maximum range, splash splash splash. I count down the reload, swing to port, and unload a starboard broadside into his sails. I'm back on line to take his next broadside into the bow. I figure I don't need the bow anyway, if things turn bad I'm running like hell from him. Once again I let loose into his sail, but his next broadside catched my starboard armor....ooch.
I keep angling for his stern, we exchange broadsides again, but he figures out where I'm going, and swings around. Damn, damn, damn, why is this hockey puck so friggen smart. My starboard armor looks like swiss cheese from his last broadside. Time to turn the port side to him, and race across his bow. Yea, that'll work....at least it better, cause so far he's winning.
My port guns unload into his sails, now he's barely moving as I cross his bow, and come down the other side. We exchange broadsides again. Ooch, that's begining to hurt, and he's still in good shape. Okay, back to plan A, I wing across his stern and target his rudder....
Hallelulah brother, I musta hit it, he's moving slow and no longer spinning like a top pounding my armor to chitlins. I grind to a halt off his ass end, and begin putting broadside after broadside into it. Soon he's hurting, no frog legs for you tonite me bucko. Stear into him, board him, and claim my prize.
Not bad with an ammo shortage....

If only that wasn't such a rare experience the game would be good. Instead it is the rare chance that fun happens in PotBS.
Standing in place and 'spinning like a top' ? ? ?
In a sailing ship ? ? ?
Honestly, that part of it isn't as bad as it sounds. If I recall, the only time you can really do that is if you're hitting land so you can get unstuck. I believe you have to have some forward momentum to turn at all, this is also affected by skills and type of ship, etc.
Still, I'm having fun with the sea combat. It beats the hell outta sit in one place in front of a mob of orcs and mash buttons mindlessly.
Oh, and by the way, he would have been heading into the wind to engage me. I see alot of people just turn their broadsides to the player with the wind, maintain a slow speed, and spin around in approximately one place firing continuos. They always seem to use ball shot only too. Crazy, I think you have to be moving and shooting to be successful.
BTW, as a "non fan" of the game, I really did enjoy the ship combat as well, and it was a great diversion from my other MMO. It wasn't enough for me to subscribe, but it's fairly enjoyable.
