Sadly I think a lot of people pay too much attention to what some people say, and dont realize that in every game there are quitters, people that get angry cause they dont have mommy and daddy save them from the bad bad ship that ganked them....
Anyway I did not take part in any beta's for this game, did not even show any interest in this game till the last two days before release.
I can honesly say that the naval battles both pvp and pve are amazing, very fun, very challenging, GREAT PVP. In fact I stayed up till 5 AM est time yesterday on the Blackbeard server trying to help the French take a port from the British... Amazing battle 24 vs 24, ships following one another building a wall pretty much picking off targets and then going to land to fight for the port! Great great fun!
Is the game without bugs? no its just like any other mmorpg that gets released, its has areas that are unpolished and unfinished (such as the avatar fighting which sucks atm) but I am now a believer and in fact cancelled my EVE subsciption due to playing and devoting all my time with this game.
So dont believe the fanbois or the naysayers try it out for yourselves people, that is what I did and couldnt be happier.

No offense, but I try to avoid games where players talk like this more than anything else.

Really? so what mmorpg game do you "not" avoid that does not have some form of PVP?
The point I was making is so many are complaining for stupid reasons, they lose a ship and all the sudden the game sucks...
Usually good advice for almost any game.

eh don't worry about him romulan. If you change the game, who cares what other people think. Unless you're playing Hello kitty Island adventures.
I have also heard a lots of bad reviews and under bad influence I almost did not buy it , and at first I was not sure if I liked this game or not , but once past level (10) I was hooked ... I believe that problem with this game for most players is, that It takes more time to understand it , and get into it ,and most of people cant be bothered to get trough the tutorial part , I can see that for most of people who gave bad review said; I did not try crafting but…… giving me an inkling that they in fact did not get far with game at first place …Learning curve was not strait forward and I also felt a bit frustrated at first but this is a great game and has even greatest potential
POTBS is not strait forward and does not follow standard MMo formulas such as WOW ,Lotre or eq2. But I admire it for having courage to try something new.
Some area (landscapes) of the game that were recently redone are beautiful and well polished whilst other s still need to be redone,
Avatar combat is not that bad as people say ,,, problem is that there are very few fighting skills but If you remember , In lotre you also start with just few skills and it takes you long time to get a decent selection ,
Well problem here is you don’t get new ones ….
Anyway Devs are saying that this was added late and will be improved with new updates, Ship combat is amazing and graphic for this part of game is breathtaking , I do wish open sea looked the same.
also problem with avatars is that they have only very basic skills .they can only walk and fight ...there are no emotes, you cant even Jump and that ruins RP and social skills,, but yet again customatisation of clothes is amazing i have never seen in any other game such great choice of colours and details you can change. For an instance we all might put on the same shirt but everyone will die it with different colour and then attach different decoration to it that I have never seen two characters dressed the same ...
Besides ship combat, economy is where game truly shines, the economy is fully player crafted and has beautiful complicity.
Some things I wish for in game;
- More Complex Avatar combat with wider range of skills, and some loot from human npc characters
- Would love open sea to have a beautiful landscape, high resolution coastline such as seen in lotre, where we could land and explore.....
- Yes Exploring , I wish map was not just handed in on a plate ,, I wish there were lands and islands to be discovered a new places to explore and treasures to be found ,,,,
- Clothes ,,, I wish that we could also craft new clothes with some stats ....or at least loot new one that we could also equip . With customatisation they have in this game it would be great fun, at the mo we can only have default clothes whilst other looted ones do not show in our appearance
- Also I wish that character needed to eat and drink ,,, it would add a lots to the game , people would need to plan their long journey carefully and sometimes stop by nearest dock to refill stocks of food ,, it would also boost the food economy ,,,,
I d like also to hear what other people would like to see in this game
Welcome to the game Romulan78!
You may be Sailing for the French, but you got the right Enemy, goodluck to you folks on the Blackbeard server!

No, actually Shift, I was pointing out that a lot of people who play MMOs will immediately be turned off by players using those kind of phrases...like myself.
Sorry, but I won't even consider a game that has PvP in it. End of story. Developers take note as this is the standpoint of many, not the few that you generally find on game forums.
PvP draws a certain crowd and this crowd DOES NOT mix well with the general population.
Honestly, I'm not a PvP'er (for the same reasons), but if it's consensual and kept away from me, I've no problems with it. I will say though, the first time I see a character named "NOOB PWNZER" I'm out...
Really?
I think there's a vast difference between the kind of people playing, say, EVE, and the kind of people playing, say, WoW's PvP servers. It really isn't about PvP, I think, it's about the context/game in which that PvP takes place.
I've seen no evidence of the more smack-talking, corpse-camping type of sociopath so far in PotBS -- perhaps because it isn't set up to afford that kind of playstyle, really.
This game have the best PvP system!
Like:
Camping a harbor is done for a reason not to grief players... you build points to take that harbor...
I have destroyed some ships that have dropped great rewards, it depends how stupid the player is who you are fighting with what he is carrying.
Avatar combat is being worked on as I agree it is by far sub par to other games using this format...
The bottom line is, you can sit there and complain about everything or actually try the game and play it the way it was intended.
Go out there and have fun, pvp, pve, make a difference, dont just go out there to find fault...
Berndr,
I agree with most of your post, however, the game does have emotes ... you just need to type a / command in the chat box to access them. I don't think there is an actual 'button graphic' to access them like other MMOs, at least not that I have been able to find. There is also a /help command that you can type to see the entire list of emotes you can do in the game. One of my favorites is /dukes.
Also ...
CoX has really in depth character creation too. If you are looking for another game with a lot of diversity as far as appearance goes, try it out. It has even more options then the one FLS incorporated into this PotBs. I'm not stating that you are looking for a new game, I'm just giving you an option if you want to test something else out.
There are 2 kinds of PvPers (or players who enjoy battling other humans, and on that I include, for example chess between 2 people).
The one enjoys to discover the mechanics of PvP, they try to master to use it against the opponent. It does not like to use creativity at all, it knows that there is a system behind the rules, and wants to master this system to use as a cake recipe (green destroys yellow, yellow destroys blue, if I discover this I will be happy and use it to win). They are logical and mechanical. Do not want to have too much space for creativity or to unexpected and randomic thing. They hate chess, because it is mechanic, but cant be mastered, for the number of possibilities are too big and needs creativity to play it. They hate more than anyone when devs change the rules (nerf), because they will have to work all it again to subdue the system.
There is other kind of PvPer, the ones who relly on creativity and hates the mechanics. It likes to discover new ways to win, to use the terrain but hates when is stopped by the system, when it is show to him that a MMO is a computer system, closed with rules and with a limited amount of choices. This kind of PvEr is more flamboyant and loses a lot to the first kind. Do not like to smash buttons and dreams with a free- cake recipe MMO, where yourself can make thedifference anytime. It reads Sun Tzu and try to CREATE (not DISCOVER) strategies to do the same thing differently. Their blast is to do little things differently and try to outrun the system. They love chess and they are bold players, doing, stupid things on the pursue of genial plays... They think that Sun Tzu is great , but only open the possibilities. It likes terrain and other kind of dinamic options that can be used differently and with creativity on a PvP.
I am the second type, therefore I am a PvPer who dislikes PoBS since I understood the cake recipe to the fight...
There is people, a lot, who are the first kind. But even those will get tired after one month of PoBS, but will LOVE it for a few weeks.
(continuing)
the first kind surf the forums to find the right template to win, it doesnt bother about immersion, it spends hours reading all tiny discover made about the combat system , which weapons and equipments is beter suited to win on PvP or PvE...
The second type thinks that the discovery, by himself, is much more fun, it does not spend hours reading about the system, in fact, it thinks that this spoil the fun. It likes to buy some equipment on impulse, to test it, even thinking that this may be a bad idea... Who knows if this way of fight is more fun.. Do not mind to win, it wants to win, but not at expense of the fun of discoveries from himself...
The towns in this game don't look so bad. But they are closed. When I'm standing with my character on the street I start to think about my days in other MMO's. I can see British soldiers infront of me. Out from the bar comes a group of drunk pirates. Battle is on! The fun has started! I wake up and see no soldiers, no fight. I see a jungle behind the walls and a door, but I can't open it up and walk into the jungle. I see guards doing salute over and over and over again. I see players taking new quests or get rewards.
I keep walking around with hope that I will run into something. But I don't. Where is the Black Pearl attack on this town? Where is the fight?
I'm forced to follow the rest and pick up quests. I can't live my own Pirate life.
Played:
From Earth & Beyond, Anarchy Online, Matrix Online, Star Wars Galaxies, World of Warcraft, Age of Conan, Tabula Rasa (Beta), EvE Online, City of Villians, Atlantica Online, Guild Wars, Lineage 2, Pirates of the Burning Sea, PlanetSide, RF Online, Second Life, Fallen Earth.
I prefer the Chess Variants myself (more room for surprises!) and like Clausewitz and Liddle-Hart...
